We know you all feel very close to the DOMMEL. It’s time to get closer! The B.O.O.M. +  First years workgroup have arranged a beautiful kayaking activity which you can join. Some of you might remember being promised canoing and barbecue last year, where only barbecue was achieved. Funny enough this time the barbecue got cancelled, but we promise that you will get wet. 🛶

Once you have accepted the inevitable, we will be expecting you to come prepared with closed shoes and unimportant clothes on the 13th of June. We gather by the Werfgebouw, located by the bridge near Luna. There are two timeslots so that you can adjust to your schedule: 14.00-16:00 for the first time-slot and at 16.00-18:00  for the second, where you will kayak through the DOMMEL with your friends and our precious guides from OKAWA for 2 hours. Prepare to be wet and tired!

Dit jaar, zullen we de Belgische ardenne bezoeken. Hier hebben wij wat avontuurlijke activiteiten voor jullie georganiseerd, op zowel de zaterdag als de zondag. We gaan nog niets verkappen, maar voorbeelden van vorige jaren zijn klimmen, mountainbiken, kanoën en een boomtoppenparkour.    Naast dit is er nog veel meer om van te genieten gedurende het weekend, je kunt bijvoorbeeld gaan “streamen” in de rivier (vraag B.O.O.M. leden om meer info) en in de avond zal er een kampvuur zijn om je warm te houden, en omdat we op een camping zitten zullen we in tenten slapen.

Je hoeft niet je eigen eten en drinken mee te nemen omdat dit allemaal inclusief is gedurende het weekend! Op vrijdag zul je de kans krijgen om Sako zijn beroemde pasta salade te proeven, en op zaterdag zullen we van een heerlijke BBQ genieten, en we zullen natuurlijk genoeg bier en fris regelen (en koffie voor de zware ochtenden).

Het weekend zal plaatsvinden van 6 tot 8 Juni 2025, als je wilt meegaan schrijf je dan hieronder in.   Omdat we genoeg autos nodig hebben om iedereen naar België te rijden, krijgen mensen met auto voorrang indien nodig. Als je een auto beschikbaar hebt, geef dat dan aan en zet erbij hoeveel plaatsen (inclusief jezelf) je hebt in de auto. We willen ook graag weten of je een tent hebt. We gaan geen groepjes maken maar het kan helpen om anderen een slaapplek te laten vinden :)   We hebben plek om 45 studenten mee te nemen op ons toffe weekend, dus schrijf je zo snel mogelijk in, first come first serve! Als er veel interesse is, kunnen we misschien opschalen, maar we kunnen nog niets beloven!

Dr. Jing Zhao obtained her PhD degree in the Numerical Analysis Group of the Department of Applied Mathematics in the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in 2015. Her PhD research focused on developing fast numerical solvers for the wheel-rail contact problems, arising from the railway industry. She has expertise in numerical iterative solvers and high-performance computing.

In the same year, after her PhD, she joined Deltares as a scientific software engineer, focusing on developing Deltares’ scientific software, particularly the Delft3D Flexible Mesh, which implements numerical solvers for hydrodynamic modelling. The users of this software include governmental organizations, consultant companies, universities and research institutes all around the world.

Since 2024, she has shifted toward Scientific Machine Learning (SciML), where she is researching on developing AI models, e.g. Graph Neural Networks–based models, as emulators of traditional numerical models for fast storm surge forecasting. Alongside this, she contributes to the development of Delft-FEWS (Flood forecasting and Early Warning System), by working on the configuration and related AI innovations.

Moreover, she maintains a close research collaboration with Delft University of Technology, on topics of SciML and fast numerical solvers (e.g., GPU-accelerated methods), by supervising PhD, Master’s, and internship projects, to bridge academic research and practical innovation.

So, you’ve found yourself in your house shying away from the stormy, cold weather outside, exaggerating your own anguish and thus amplifying it. The only thing you can do about it now, is to find some friends so you don’t have to suffer together. Sadly your friends are far away and you’ll have to walk all by yourself to get to them. Luckily we have the solution for you: walk together! You won’t be lonely this winter, as you’ll be going on the best weekend of the year, the GEDWAAL weekend! We will do a nice hike together through the beautiful landscapes of Beek.

After this nice refreshing jaunt, you’ll be able to take some time to reheat your innards for a while, after which you’ll be busy competing in a fabulous Saturday-night activity. Taking a well-deserved rest will charge us right back up for a spectacular activity on Sunday, which will lead us to the end of the weekend.

There is an option to bring your luggage with you while hiking, which will grant you a huge discount of €5!!!!! If there are too many people who want to put their luggage in the car, we will do a draw amongst the ones who are also able to hike with it.

We will be traveling to our location by train, and will be gathering at Eindhoven Centraal.

Initially there will be 25 spots available, of which 8 spots can leave their luggage in the car. These numbers might be increased if interest is shown. For the past few years, we have traditionally seen a themed cantus organized by the sjaarzen around this time of year. After all these iterations of themed cantussen, it is time once again for a traditional cantus, organized by the real specialists, without all the bells and whistles of themes and sjaarzen. A cantus as it was meant to be: a celebration of an age-old tradition, embraced by students from the Netherlands and Flanders alike. This tradition originated in monasteries, where people would dine while singing songs and enjoying splendid beers and wines. While dinner is no longer part of the modern student variant (also known as a beercantus), it remains a cozy evening where we joyfully sing songs and drink beers together.

Even though this is a traditional cantus, our association still has something to celebrate. From this day onward, GEWIS will have known more days with the existence of In Vino Veritas than without. This makes it a perfect occasion to celebrate the many years the association has been delighted by the presence of In Vino Veritas.

Next to that, there will also be a training day during the holidays where you need to be present. This day is on the Saturday before the intro week, so 16/08/2025. If you are currently studying, you can be an intro parent!

NextGen Smart Meters – Intelligence and Security at the Edge of the Grid

The NextGen Smart Meters project is a major leap forward in preparing the Dutch electricity grid for a future of decentralized and electrified energy use. With the rapid growth of solar panels, electric vehicles, and heat pumps, the low-voltage grid is under increasing pressure. Managing these distributed energy flows requires smarter, real-time insights from deep within the grid.

To meet this challenge, millions of advanced smart meters—each with edge computing capabilities—are being deployed across the country. These meters are designed to do more than just measure consumption in the future; they actively monitor and analyze local grid conditions, helping operators better balance demand and supply on a neighborhood scale.

Infiniot plays a key role in enabling this transformation. Carlo and Joost ensure that the software running on and around these meters is thoroughly and continuously tested. At the same time, we implement robust security measures to safeguard sensitive data and protect this critical infrastructure from potential threats.

With our contribution, NextGen Smart Meters are not only smarter, but also more reliable and secure—paving the way for a flexible and resilient energy system fit for the future.

In het weekend van 16 t/m 18 mei bevaren wij de tropische wateren van het Sneekermeer in Fryslân. Zie jij ons zeilavontuur naar de meest authentieke bruine kroeg in heinde en verre ook zo zitten?  Pak dan je schatkaart erbij, vul je ruim met bier en rum en schrijf je snel in!

Voor slechts enkele dukaten (we accepteren ook euro's) regelen wij een polyvalk voor jou en je vrienden, een kampeerplek (de tent moet je helaas wel zelf meenemen), eten en drinken! Kom mee met dit geweldige weekend en breng overdag de wateren van Fryslân, en 's nachts in de bruinste kroegen, in gevaar. Zeilervaring is niet nodig!

Practical information:

The competition is intended for groups of three, you can sign up as a group of two, but groups of three have priority.The competition is intended for the first years. However, you are still allowed to participate as a higher year. There is a maximum of 25 teams. If there are more teams subscribed at the moment of closing, we will hold a draw. When drawing the teams, we will prioritize first-year teams.

Heb jij altijd al álle bierspelletjes willen leren van de echte kenners? Altijd al willen ervaren hoe het is om zonder moeite een vers drankje in je handen gedrukt te krijgen zodra je glas leeg is? Dan is de oud-BAC borrel dé gelegenheid waar je bij moet zijn.

Eens per jaar verruilen de oud-leden van de BAC hun plek aan de andere kant van de bar om zelf weer te shinen achter de tap. Dit is hét moment waarop zij hun jarenlange ervaring en doorgewinterde borrelkennis met trots delen met de nieuwe generatie. Ze laten zien hoe het écht moet, en vooral: hoe het er 'vreuger' aan toe ging.

Of je nu komt voor de nostalgie, de gezelligheid of simpelweg om je drinktechnieken naar een hoger niveau te tillen—de oud-BAC borrel biedt voor ieder wat wils. Verwacht een avond vol gelach, verhalen uit de oude doos, spontane spelletjes en natuurlijk: nooit een leeg glas.

Zorg dus dat je erbij bent op 9 mei, want dit wil je écht niet missen. Tot dan!

Hoi Borrelaars!

Op donderdag 8 mei is het weer zo ver, de donderdag van de BAC Lustrumweek! En wat zou de BAC zijn als er niet op donderdag een borrel is? 

Dit jaar gaan we weer terug naar de basis, maar in een groots jasje. Met een flinke borrelkaart op zak en een lekker klassiek drankje in je hand is het een recept voor gezelligheid en vertier!

Bierliefhebbers opgelet! Ter ere van het lustrum organiseert de BAC een speciaalbierproeverij. Laat je smaakpapillen verrassen door een zorgvuldig geselecteerd assortiment aan bijzondere bieren. De selectie is gemaakt op basis van 3 categorieën: Uniekheid, toegankelijkheid en doordrinkbaarheid. Of je nu een doorgewinterde bierkenner bent of gewoon zin hebt in een gezellige avond: dit is dé kans om samen te genieten van enkele bieren die je waarschijnlijk nog nooit gehad hebt!

Uiteraard gaan deze bieren gepaard met een bijpassend borrelhapje. Daarnaast zal bij de bieren een kort, interessant verhaaltje verteld worden over de brouwerij, het bier en/of het brouwproces.

Voor de geïnteresseerden, enkele van de proefnotities bij de voorselectie waren: "Interessant" "Te zwaar voor het tweede bier" "Dit is geen IPA..."

Bij de prijs inbegrepen zijn 5 speciaal bieren en de bijpassende hapjes.

LET OP: er is een beperkte initiële capaciteit van 40; die kan eventueel worden verhoogd tot 48.

Graduating at ASML: How I Trained an AI Model to Improve Computer Chip Manufacturing  By Thomas Kamminga

Until this summer, I was in your shoes as a mathematics student. I completed my studies with a graduation project at ASML, where I trained a graph neural network to denoise measurements used in the chip manufacturing process. In this presentation, I will share how I ended up at ASML, explain the process of manufacturing a computer chip, discuss what I tried to achieve with my model, and, of course, delve into some exciting mathematics!

Tijdens de Ouderdagen kunnen ouders (of vrienden en familie) van eerstejaars studenten een dag vol colleges en TU/e ervaren. Professors, afgestudeerden en de Ouderdag Commissie zullen aan het woord komen en zorgen dat je ouders leuk kunnen kennismaken met je studie. Reading code is much harder than writing code. Yet, a line of code is read more often than it is being written. Thus, we need documentation, which is read less! Wouldn't it be great to use this documentation more effectively? Enter Model Driven Engineering, where the model represents both documentation and (part of) the software. At Sioux we've developed our own IDE to tackle this problem and have successfully applied it to several projects. Come and listen what this perhaps strange programming method has to offer, and we might change your thoughts what a programming language actually is.

However beautiful the Netherlands may be, sometimes we need to get out for a weekend. Unfortunately, we are poor students and don’t have money to book a flight. Before you start to wail in agony, we can present you a better method, a cheaper method, a more fun method: Hitchhiking!

For only 50 measly euros you can make your way all the way to Hamburg!

Though you should know this will not be a leisurely voyage. The goal is not just to get to your destination, but to do it as fast as possible. Find your favorite friend, piece together some cardboard signs and hop in a strangers car! There will be challenges to fulfill along the way which can improve your final time!

Since we don’t have infinite stamina and are hungover on Sunday morning, we will all travel back by train together on Sunday evening.

To help you all on your way and make sure that you build the extensive skill set needed for hitchhiking, we will be organizing an information session with some general information and a couple of helpful tips.

If there are more than 15 duo's within 24 hours, a draw will be held. After this, the subscription will be "first come, first served". Do make sure to subscribe, since there will be a waiting list!

On the 28 March we are organising the W4 Kangaroo maths competition, the Dutch version of the worldwide Mathematical Kangaroo. In this test you will get 30 maths questions of increasing difficulty, that everyone (including Computer Science students) can have a fun time with.

This year, the Carnaval Committee has decided to change up things a bit. Instead of going to Mestreech, this year the GEWIS prince will take you all to visit Kielegat (Breda) on Carnaval Monday!

We will travel to Breda by train to celebrate Carnaval there. During this day, we will do a pub crawl through the city centre and also go to watch the large parade to enjoy the sight of beautiful wagons all while enjoying some nice drinks!

Hello everyone, Also this year ATHENA is organising an exciting trip. After having gone to Germany and Belgium with the previous two trips, we have decided to stay within the Netherlands🇳🇱 this year around. After some heavy thinking we have landed on the beautiful city of Leiden🏙. With all its canals and beautiful old buildings and streets we will for sure experience the real culture of Dutch architecture. To make the stay even more exited, this year we will be sleeping on a klipper (a sailing ship) ⛵that is located on the Zijlsingel of Leiden.  The weekend will take place from Friday the 14th of February until Sunday the 16th of February. In addition to the stay on the Klipper we have arranged for breakfast🥐, some fun activities and dinner on the Saturday. The remainder of the weekend you will have free time to enjoy, join us on a beautiful walk through Leiden and visit the many cultural aspects this city has to offer🚶‍♀.  The subscription list will open Wednesday the 23rd of October at 12.30. Do you know the difference between a vulva and a vagina? And how much do you know about the human reproductive system? Sexologist Marieke Dewitte discusses everything related to our sexual anatomy and its relationship to sexual pleasure.

We all know what our own genitals look like, and maybe some of us have seen those belonging to others as well. But despite sex education being part of most high school curricula, general knowledge about our reproductive organs is often lacking. We confuse facts with myths, we only know the bare minimum about sexual intercourse, and the anatomy of these organs is a mystery to many of us.

It is high time to change this, so take the opportunity to join this crash course in human anatomy, specifically about the genitals and the diversity of the human body. In the midst of it all, you will also learn more about sexuality, getting aroused and enjoying yourself during sex. 

Dr. Marieke Dewitte is a clinical psychologist and sexologist. She is an assistant professor at the Department of Clinical Psychology at Maastricht University, where she has established a unique sex lab to study sexual interactions between couples. Her research focuses on the basic mechanisms of sexual functioning, interactions between partners during sexual arousal, and attachment in relation to sexual responses.

Na het succes van vorig jaar moesten we natuurlijk wel. Als Feestcafé "De BAC" zo goed is, waar is dan het vervolg? Precies! Bij GEWIS natuurlijk, op 6 februari 2025! Om de borrel activiteit toegankelijk te houden voor iedereen, vragen wij geen geld aan de deur. Ook zal de bierprijs niet veranderen en zal deze op de lage prijs van €1 blijven staan (dat zie je niet op Stratum!). Om toch wat inkomsten te hebben, organiseert de BAC een fondsenwerving. Ben jij klaar voor een realistische en meeslepende ervaring in de wereld van logistieke problemen? Deze case is een weergave van waar wij als consultants van Pipple dagelijks mee te maken hebben. Je wordt benaderd door een collega om aan te sluiten bij een logistiek probleem bij een klant, waar het nog niet direct duidelijk is wat het probleem is. Je ontvangt een reeks e-mails van een fictieve klant genaamd LogiSolutions, vol klachten over leveringen en service.

Jouw uitdaging? Identificeer de kernproblemen en ontwikkel een presentatie over het 'picking proces'. Via rollenspellen met belangrijke spelers, zoals de magazijnmanager en IT-hoofd, ontdek je subtiele aanwijzingen. Er lijkt iets mis te zijn met de 'picking rondes', maar wat precies?  Duik dieper in de data en identificeer inconsistenties en problemen. Deze training biedt een unieke kans om je analytische vaardigheden toe te passen op realistische scenario's en biedt inzicht in de complexiteit van het dagelijkse werk van een data consultant.

Git, the most popular version control system, used around the world by Computer Scientists for all sorts of project. While it is a wonderful tool, makes managing projects really smooth and has saved many side-projects from being accidentally deleted, it can be quite tricky to master. 

Luckily, there is no need to fear, as we are presenting to you the TRAIN Git Training! Do you want to get to know the difference between merging and rebasing? Between committing and pushing? Or how to manage different branches? Do you actually want to know what any of the previous words mean? Come to the training, where an expert on the topic will teach you all  the basics. TU/ecomotive is a student team that aims at shaping the future of sustainable mobility by implementing cutting edge ecological innovations into concept cars. With their newest car Phoenix, they are tackling the waste crisis. It sets an example for efficient closed-loop recycling as 75% of its materials can be reused to build future cars.

Solar Team Eindhoven is a student team that strives for a sustainable future, where life is powered by the sun. As a result they develop cars that run on solar energy. Their most recent car is called Stella Terra, which is the worlds first off-road solar car. It's designed to be self-sufficient, eliminating the need for charging stations, and it's engineered to handle not only paved roads but also rugged terrain.

 Each year both teams are looking for new enthusiastic students, to help them achieve their goals. During the lecture they will elaborate on their goals and explain what it is like to be part of a student team.

Het is de laatste vrijdag van de ledenlustrumweek! En je weet wat dat betekent, zodra de klok 16:30 slaat, is het tijd voor een legendarische vrijdagmiddagborel, de ledenlustrumweek VrijMi’Vo! De koelkast zal rijkelijk gevuld zijn met pils en speciaalbiertjes. Maar dat is niet alles, we raden je aan om op tijd te zijn, want om 5 uur sluiten wij een gratis (ja gratis!) fustje Hangende Harry IPA aan!   Op deze middag/avond zal er uiteraard genoeg mogelijkheid zijn om wat eten te bestellen, te bierpongen of te genieten van de gesprekken aan de bar. Wij zien je graag vanaf vrijdagmiddag tot aan vrijdagavond aan de bar bij GEWIS!

Ben je teleurgesteld dat de Batavierenrace dit jaar niet doorgaat? Geen zorgen! De Ledenlustrumweek heeft een eigen versie van de Batavierenrace voor je; de Batabierenrace.

Startend vanaf de slimste vierkante kilometer van Europa — de High Tech Campus — ren je langs de prachtige Dommel en finish je bij de iconische Markthal op de campus van de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven. Deze prachtige route is ongeveer 6 kilometer lang en je rent het samen met een buddy.

Maar wat is de Batavierenrace zonder een episch feest? Helaas zijn we beperkt in middelen, maar we hebben iets net zo spannends voor je gepland. Geïnspireerd door de legendarische Scooter brothers en hun “100 shots, 100 hits, 100 toeters, 100 keer escalatie,” presenteren we: "6 bier, 6 kilometers, 6 adtjes voor onderweg."

De uitdaging? Ren het 6 kilometer lange route met je buddy en een krat van 12 bier. Er zijn maar drie regels:

Voltooi de route.Zorg dat je het krat op hebt aan het einde van de route.Drink twee bier per kilometer.

Hoe je deze uitdaging voltooid, is aan jou, zolang je maar geen druppel verspilt. Houd je je niet aan de regels? Dan kun je consequenties verwachten!

Geen zin om te drinken? Geen probleem! Je kunt nog steeds meedoen zonder alcohol of kiezen voor een krat alcoholvrije biertjes.

Dus, ben je klaar om te rennen, drinken en onvergetelijke herinneringen te maken? Schrijf je zo snel mogelijk in voor de Batabierenrace!

Het is de dinsdag van na GLOW, en je weet wat dat betekent: lichtkunst bij GEWIS! En hoe kunnen we dat beter doen dan met bier? Ben jij een ervaren en getrainde borrelaar? Kun jij de toeters van de Gebroeders Scooter verslaan zonder eraan ten onder te gaan? En ben jij in staat om woensdagmorgen in bed te blijven liggen? Dan roepen wij jou op voor de grootste uitdaging van het jaar!

Wij willen graag de paar dwazen uitnodigen die moedig genoeg zijn om dit pad met ons te bewandelen. Er zullen nieuwe en speciale lichteffecten zijn, verzorgd door AViCo en de ABC, er zal bier zijn, verzorgd door de BAC, er zal nederlaag zijn, en er zullen overwinnaars zijn. Stijg op tot de uitdaging! Hef je borrelglas en doe je best!

Om 18:00 uur beginnen we onze uitdaging met de 100-minuten mix. Na de eerste strijd nemen we een pauze van ongeveer een uur om te genieten van eten van Snackcenter Eindhoven. Daarna, zodra we onze innerlijke kracht hebben herwonnen, gaan we deelnemen aan het tweede 100-minuten avontuur.

Omdat we wat later beginnen, vragen we iedereen vriendelijk om van tevoren iets te snacken of te eten. Ook (zoals geïmpliceerd), drink alsjeblieft geen alcohol voordat de activiteit begint. Er zijn aanvankelijk 30 plekken beschikbaar, maar dit kan worden uitgebreid. Als de activiteit vol zit één uur na het openen van de inschrijflijst, zal er worden geloot.

Elk jaar gaan de (oud-)penningmeesters van GEWIS op uitje om hun functie te vieren. Dit jaar zijn ze naar Scheidam, hoofdstad van de jenever, geweest. Hier hebben ze geleerd over jenever, wat het is, hoe het gedestilleerd wordt, de verschillende soorten jenever, of de Bokma al koud staat en nog veel meer.

Het is daarom dat wij deze kennis met liefde en plezier willen overdragen aan alle andere leden van GEWIS op de eerste dag van de Ledenlustrumweek. Bij deze jeneverproeverij heb je de kans om 6 verschillende jenevers (en verwanten) te proeven, onder het genot van een hapje en een informatief praatje over de desbetreffende versnaperingen. 

Jammer genoeg kunnen we de jenevers niet gratis aanbieden, daarom vragen we een deelnemers bijdrage van €11,- om de onkosten te vergoeden.  

Er is plek voor slechts 30 mensen, dus zorg dat je je op tijd inschrijft.

Sinterklaas komt op 16 November weer uit Spanje naar het o zo mooie Nederland. We hopen dat iedereen zich bij GEWIS goed gedragen heeft en niet mee teruggenomen wordt naar Spanje. Sinterklaas heeft dit jaar hulp gevraagd aan de AC, en dus gaan we voor hem bij GEWIS de traditie van een schoentje zetten voortzetten. Van 18 tot 22 November kun je in de GEWIS ruimte je papieren Schoen vouwen en kleuren om vervolgens bij de open haard neer te zetten. De weken erna, tot 5 December, zal SinterklAC en zijn Oranje Pieten zo nu en dan langskomen met cadeautjes en strooigoed.  Zorg er dus voor dat je snel je schoentje klaarzet voor leuke verrassingen!

Doe mee aan de Navara-Harvest Hackathon! 🌳

Ben jij een student met een passie voor technologie én de natuur? Dan is dit jouw kans om impact te maken! In samenwerking met Natuurmonumenten organiseren we een hackathon waarbij jij de toekomst van natuurbeheer kunt vormgeven.

🔎 De uitdaging: De boswachters van Natuurmonumenten monitoren allerlei diersoorten, maar dat gebeurt nog veel met pen en papier. Dit kan sneller en slimmer. Jij gaat aan de slag om samen met jouw team een app te ontwikkelen waarmee boswachters direct in het veld data kunnen invoeren: van het spotten van diersoorten tot het vastleggen van locaties en aantallen.

🐾 Jouw missie: Help Natuurmonumenten met het moderniseren van hun natuurbeheer. Ontwikkel een app waarmee het tellen van diersoorten, het analyseren van populaties, en het registreren van overlast eenvoudiger en efficiënter wordt. Samen harmoniseren we deze registratie, zodat boswachters en ecologen meer inzicht krijgen in het natuurbeheer in Nederland.

We doen dit door middel van spelletjes die je in een groepje van 3 of 4 succesvol moet volbrengen, om een hint te krijgen over wie de nieuwe prins gaat zijn. Er zijn genoeg snacks aanwezig en de activiteit is volledig gratis!

Uiteraard zal deze prachtige datum ook op Stratum in het teken staan van carnaval en daarom gaan we naderhand gezellig de stad in met wie dat graag wil. Vergeet niet verkleed te komen, we zien je dan!

At the Eindhoven office of UiPath, we are mainly focusing on the Process Mining product. However, Process Mining is only one of the products in the broader suite. Other products focus, for example, on robots that automate tasks or help you process documents with AI. Process Mining projects are usually using data from source systems, but recently we have worked on a project that is using our own data. We combine data from the source systems with data generated by using UiPath automations. In this lunch lecture, Celine Verhoef will walk you through the process from design to implementation.

On Monday the 21st of October GEWIS will organise a study session for the course Set Theory and Mathematical Language. Here you can join to study on your own, or together with other students. There will also be some older students present to help you with any question that you might have. You can use this time any way you want, just to study on your own or ask questions!

There is a lot you can do in half a minute. You could crACk some mACadamia nuts, fACt check your friends, or play a round of 30 Seconds! The latter is the most fun of course, so we decided to turn 30 Seconds an ACtivity.

For the people who don't know 30 seconds, here's a quick explanation. You play in teams (or subscribe alone to be paired up with a random other player). When it's your team's turn, one teammate gets a card with 5 words (or names, phrases etc). That teammate gets 30 seconds to describe these words to their team. They are not allowed to use the words themselves, parts of them (words like 'and' and 'the' are fine), or translations. 'Sounds like' hints are not allowed either. Your team earns a step forward on the board for every guessed word. There is a die as well that reduces the steps forward by 0, 1, or 2 steps. The goal of the game is to reach the finish line first. We will play in English with self-made cards. As we will still need to something to play on, we kindly ask you if you would be willing to bring your (Dutch) 30 Seconds board game.

If you're the type of person who enjoys playing a fun game with GEWIS friends (and maybe make some new ones in the process), you do not want to miss this! If you enjoy tasty snACks, we will provide those as well.

During this lunch lecture, Arno and Pebble will give a presentation about the mathematical consulting work that is done at Sioux Mathware. After a general introduction of the company, two projects will be presented: Arno will discuss work that we did to optimize garbage collection in Amsterdam. Although this may sound simple on first glance, many factors can be considered, such as the time at which Ajax plays their matches, making this a very interesting optimization problem. 

After that, Pebble will talk about the internship that she is currently doing at Mathware. She has looked into using generative machine learning to create realistic X-ray images from simulated data. As this is a project in the medical domain, it is very important to make sure that no relevant information is altered that could lead to a misdiagnosis. Additionally, she can tell you all about what doing an internship at Sioux Mathware looks like.

The time has finally come: to finish Défi's spectacular first lustrum week, we have put  all of our enthusiasm and time into organizing our first external GEWIS weekend, dedicated to our lustrum.

We wouldn't be Défi if we made subscribing to our weekend somewhat out of your comfort zone, which is why we are keeping the location a secret, as well as the activities that are planned for the weekend. Are you willing to take that risk with us?

For GEWIS members the weekend will cost 55 euros. For graduates this price is doubled, leading to 110 euros. What you will get for this, is the following. Of course, a two-nights-stay at a beautiful location is included. On Friday evening, we will have a buffet at the location. Both on Saturday and Sunday morning, there will be breakfast provided by the location. Furthermore, we have two activities organized for you throughout the weekend.

Note that we will go to the location using public transportation. We accounted for this on the budget, so don't be afraid that you will need to pay more if you don't have a weekend-free subscription.

The day has finally arrived, the day we've all been waiting for... Défi turns 5 years old today! Naturally, this day has to be celebrated big, and what is a better celebration than singing songs together on our birthday? As a 5-year-old, Défi loves to dress up for a masquerade cantus, which you can join us for on this beautiful, yet mystical Wednesday, October 9th. Knowing Défi, this cantus will not be like other cantusses you've joined in the past, and one change in that is the type of drink: aside from the regular beer, you can also join this cantus while drinking paardenkut (a mix of Apfelkorn and sparkling water)! It has to be noted, though, that there is no possibility to switch between beer and paardenkut during the cantus. Of course, you can also join this cantus with a water ticket.

To obtain a ticket, make sure to approach a Défi member or the board, and we'll see you at our masquerade cantus on the 9th of October!

On this afternoon, the Défi lustrum week will officially start! And the bravest among us will join Défi on an abseiling adventure of Vertigo! This is the chance to challenge our natural fear of heights, and to see the campus from a whole new perspective. While that sounds exciting, we understand it can be scary to step out of your comfort zone. But you don’t have to worry, because once you have successfully completed the abseil, Défi, Wolfpack and the BAC will welcome you back on the ground with a nice cold drink in your hand. We will gather all the victors and celebrate their succes at this victory borrel.

There is also good news for those who were unable to participate in the abseiling activity. The victory borrel is open for all GEWIS members so that we can celebrate the succes stories together. At the start of the borrel, you can even watch the last group making their way down Vertigo. Meanwhile, Wolfpack will make sure that there are some nice beers and sodas while cheering the last group on (rumour has it that they bought a keg for you all).

So whether you want to celebrate our lustrum, your abseiling succes or if you want to cheer the victors on from a distance, we hope to see you at the borrel!

Picture this: you, standing at the top of one of the tallest buildings on campus, heart racing, as you prepare to descend into the thrill of a lifetime. Five years ago, Défi organized abseiling from Vertigo, which was the final step for Défi to become a fraternity.

Soon, Défi will turn five years old. To kick off our Lustrum week, we are going to abseil from Vertigo again in collaboration with the Eindhoven Student Alpine Club (ESAC) and Wolfpack!  

But the excitement doesn’t end when your feet touch the ground! Once you’ve successfully made your descent, you’ll be welcomed back with a well-earned borrel. Gather with fellow adventurers, share your stories of triumph, and toast to an unforgettable day. Rumour has it that Wolfpack has bought a keg for you all.

Zet koers naar een groots avontuur op de serene wateren van Loosdrecht, waar de wind ons zal leiden en de zeilen onze vleugels zullen zijn. Rond lunchtijd zetten we koers naar een charmant eiland voor een welverdiende pauze. Stel je voor: je stapt aan land, de zon straalt, omringd door de rust van de natuur. We ontspannen, delen verhalen en genieten van elkaars gezelschap terwijl we de prachtige omgeving en onze lunch in ons opnemen.

Er is geen eerdere zeilervaring nodig om mee te doen—het draait allemaal om plezier maken op het water, ongeacht je vaardigheidsniveau. Dus verzamel je vrienden, breng je gevoel voor avontuur mee en bereid je voor op een onvergetelijke dag!

We regelen het vervoer en als we genoeg auto's bij elkaar krijgen, rijden we samen naar Loosdrecht. Anders nemen we het openbaar vervoer en maken we van de reis zelf een deel van het avontuur.

Throughout your academic career, you will need to use LaTeX many many times. Now, there are two paths you can take; get to know LaTeX, fall in love, get married, and live happily together throughout your studies. Or, refuse to use LaTeX until you are forced to, at which point you will be confused, disoriented, and frustrated with it. I think we both know which of those two options is preferable.

As a mathematics student, you will need to use LaTeX already in the first quartile, but computer science students will have to use it as well later this year. To prepare you properly for this, TRAIN is organizing a LaTeX training, during which you will be guided through the basics of how to use it for your homework assignments. All you need to bring is your laptop!

To keep your body fueled, we will provide some free snacks and drinks. We look forward to seeing you there!

Data in the Built Environment – Why nothing has changed in 2000 years

Have you ever wondered why every building project goes over budget and does not meet its original planning? Or why that annoying pothole in front of your home never gets fixed? I (Sander de Meij, from BIM-Connected) suggest that’s because the Built Environment has not really changed that much since the first time we started making buildings thousands of years ago.

Part of this issue is the incredibly inefficient way the Built Environment implements data, digital tools and other ‘smart’ solutions. We at BIM-Connected help this industry to move into the future by implementing intelligent data solutions using Linked Data and the Semantic Web.

Hey first-years!

Today, on this fateful day, a most wonderful event will occur: the new First Year Committees will be formed! Last week, on Thursday, I organised a nice information meeting in which I explained what FYCs are, and let several FYCs from last year share their experiences. If you missed it and would still like to know more about FYCs, you can almost always find me in GEWIS, and I'm always up for a quick chat about them!

If I'd have to summarise the concept of an FYC really quickly, I'd do it as follows: It's essentially a group of first-years, with the main goal of getting to know each other and having a lot of fun. It also offers the opportunity to, as a group, get to know GEWIS a bit better, go to fun activities, and making friends that will stay with you for the rest of your studies.

During this meeting, you'll form groups that will afterwards become our new FYCs, and get some time to brainstorm a name for your group, as well as other fun ideas that you might want to do throughout the year. I hope to see you all there!

Hey first-years!

During the introduction week you might have heard someone (probably Jens) talk about First Year Committees (FYCs). These committees are mainly meant for first-year students to connect with each other and provide an easy way for you to get to know the association a bit better.

Aside from the social aspects of FYCs, they also allow you to learn a lot of new skills, like organising activities, leading meetings, taking minutes, and many others. Don't be worried about the workload though, as FYCs have no real obligations; the main goal of them is to help you enjoy your year, so you can put as much time as you feel like you have into them.

During this meeting, I'll give you a brief explanation on how FYCs work, and some FYCs from last year will also join to share experiences from their committees.  There will also be free lunch for everyone attending! I hope to see you there.

Get to know your speaker! My name is Rafael Matias and I am a 25 year old Software Engineer working at ING in the Trade Finance department. I came to the Netherlands from Portugal just over two years ago to kickstart my career as a Tech professional with ING and have experienced exciting and amusing challenges ever since!

I will be talking about these challenges in more detail, going through the context in which they occurred, the approach that was taken to find a solution and how it ended up being implemented. I’ll also cover my experience in ING’s Tech Class graduate program and will mention which opportunities you can find in ING as a young Tech professional. Above all, I will share with you the joys and troubles of my life as a Software Engineer so you can gain more insight on what to expect from this vocation!

Flunkyball is een spel waar twee teams tegen elkaar spelen. Je staat met je team aan een kant van het veld naast elkaar, met ieder een blik drinken voor je. In het midden van het veld staat een fles. Om de beurt mogen beide teams proberen de fles om te gooien met een bal. Als de fles omgegooid is mag het hele team beginnen met drinken totdat de tegenstanders de fles weer recht hebben gezet, de bal AChter hun lijn is en alle spelers weer bij hun blik staan. Het team dat als eerst alle blikken heeft leeggedronken is de winnaar.

Dus, wil jij bewijzen dat je de beste bent in adten, dat je goed kan mikken of heb je gewoon zin om Flunkyball te spelen? Meld je dan nu aan! Je kunt meedoen met halve liter blikken bier (6% alcohol), radler (3% alcohol) of met frisdrank. 

Het idee is om 4 teams te maken. Dan kunnen de winnaars van de eerste wedstrijd de winnaarsfinale spelen, en kunnen de verliezers ook nog een extra potje spelen. De 5 euro contributie is om 6 blikken te kopen. Dit zou genoeg moeten zijn voor de twee wedstrijden als je niet te veel strafblikken krijgt. Mochten er aan het einde van het spel nog blikken over zijn is er ruimte voor wat extra potjes na de competitie.

In het weekend van 13-15 September gaat het eerste GEWIS-weekend van het jaar weer plaatsvinden: the enige echte FLUP (Introductie Follow Up Weekend)! Het zal weer een groots feest worden voor 3 dagen. We gaan bier en fris drinken, chillen op zitzakken en banken, spellen spelen, genieten van een barbeque, we houden een cantus en doen een kroegentocht.. alles wat je maar kan willen dus! D-Data is a dynamic, young organization focusing on developing data engineering and data science talent. During this lunch lecture, you'll get an insider's view of what it's like to work as a data engineering and data science consultant at D-Data.

We'll kick things off with an introduction to our company and how we approach solving real-world problems. Then, we'll dive into an exciting cryptocurrency project we’ve worked on. This project focuses on uncovering patterns in data using advanced mathematical and econometric models, ultimately driving meaningful economic insights.

One of our newest team members, an alumnus of TU/e with a background in Computer Science, will share their experience going through his onboarding project on street litter detection, and walk you through all the key data-related topics they tackled from start to finish.

Are you having a calculus entrance test on September 5th but you are not yet sure where to eat beforehand? No worries! AViCo organizes the Frietkarborrel, a social drink where you can get yourself some nice chips (French fries) and a snack for dinner such that you don’t have to worry about that yourself.

And the best: if you are a first year you even get one item for free! If you are still hungry after that, it is €2,- per additional snack or portion of fries.

We welcome you all to come somewhere between 16:30 and 20:00 to the Frietkarborrel at the Simon Stevin field (between the Markthall and the pond). No need to sign up! There will be enough fries for everyone!

Even if you do not have a calculus midterm you are welcome to join and get some nice food and a couple of drinks.

After a hectic introduction week where you have (hopefully) made a lot of new friends it is time to really start your student life. And no student life without studying. However, you might already heard a lot of concepts you have never heard of, like "Canvas", "TE Timetable", "Plan App" or "Osiris". But don’t be afraid! There is no need to worry. Attending this training will teach you all the basics you need to know to survive all the software at the TU/e.

In case there are more then 120 people that want to attend, there will be a "first come, first serve" policy. In that case the remainder can view the session online.

Don’t forget to bring your laptop!

Georgios Evangelou will provide an interesting presentation on why he decided to go for the 2 year salaried post-master EngD Software Technology program for technological designers with TU/e, give some nice examples of multidisciplinary group training projects and also elaborate on his individual graduation project ‘Automatic and Optimized Hardware Sequence Generation and Inline Interpretation’ conducted at ASML. His thesis won the Software Technology Award 2024.

De viering van academia is een traditie die zich uit de oude tijd stamt. Ook deze universiteit doet jaarlijks mee aan deze vrolijke vieringen. Echter, terwijl het feestvierende publiek zich verzamelt in de Blauwe Zaal, kiest Hèt Dispuut voor een viering met een meer intieme en traditionele sfeer, waar de ware academische geest kan bloeien.

Hèt Dispuut "In Vino Veritas" nodigt de leden van de vereniging van harte uit om samen de start van een nieuw academisch jaar te vieren. Dit jaar zullen er Amusekaarten worden verkocht, waarop een selectie van verfijnde Nederlandse versnaperingen prijkt.

Op 2 september vanaf 17:00 uur verwelkomt Hèt Dispuut u voor een avond van gezelligheid en goede smaak. Naast de heerlijke amuses zal Hèt Dispuut u voorzien van (mousserende) wijn en andere versnaperingen, om goede gesprekken te stimuleren die met een kritische blik kijken naar de dagelijkse gang van zaken.

Ter ere van deze gelegenheid verzoeken wij u vriendelijk om gepaste kleding te dragen.

Going to pick up your laptop? Make sure to also pick up the books you ordered from GEWIS! 

We will hand out the books from 12 o'clock onwards. To ease the wait between the laptop and book pickup, we will provide some free lunch, and games for you to play. So meet up with all the nice people you met during the introduction week and reminisce about how fun the week has been and look forward together to the start of the academic year. 

When you pick up your book, you will also get a voucher for a free soda or beer. You can only use them at the social drink that afternoon, which starts at 16:30. So make sure to hang around!

You can find us outside on the field between Metaforum and Atlas, next to the pond. 

If the weather turns out badly, we will move inside to the GEWIS room

This year the Intro Department Party will take on a bit of a different shape. Join us at our own festival with all of your favourite GEWIS-artists!!! 🥳

Heb jij zin in de zomer, man?

De BAC heeft zin in de zomer, man! En hoe kun je nou beter van de zomer genieten dan met een strand? Nou, door niet helemaal naar Best te hoeven fietsen! Voor ons is zelfs de IJzeren Man te ver lopen. Nee, voor deze ultieme zomerervaring hoef je niet eens de campus te verlaten!

Maar weet je wat het probleem is met de meeste stranden? Zand! We houden niet van zand. Het is grof en ruw en vervelend, en het komt overal terecht. Echter, het hele strandhangen is wel weer top.

Zie je het al voor je: strandstoelen, cocktails, bier waarvoor je niet 8 euro betaalt, Desperados, muziek en meer. Daarom presenteert de BAC de perfecte oplossing voor iedereen die echt van de zomer wil genieten: de "Strand zonder Zand" Borrel.

Zie jij jezelf al in een strandstoel met een ijskoude Desperados of een cocktail genieten van Playa del Atlas op zijn mooist! Kom dan vooral op 15 augustus met je zonnebril naar het beste Strand zonder Zand.

Next week is the interim exam period. Of course you need a nice place to study. You might think about going to the crowded library, but we have a better idea!

From Wednesday August 7th until Friday evening August 16th you will be able to study in MF3.103, and MF3.105! Of course, this is awesome because:

Tea and coffee are seconds awayYou can use our books to study (ask the board before borrowing please)You can work together with your friends and ask advice from those who have already mastered the courses you are currently working on!

One of the rooms will be a designated silence room, and one will be for collaboration.

De zomer is inmiddels al een tijdje bezig, en jullie zijn je misschien aan het afvragen waar ons jaarlijkse "Spel met Ballen" blijft. Maar maak je geen zorgen, want de tijd is gekomen om weer met ballen te gooien, onder het genot van een mooi glas wijn.

Dit jaar organiseert "In Vino Veritas" een nog grandiozere "Spel met Ballen"; dit keer is het evenement gecombineerd met een activiteit waar we bekend om staan, de Maand'lijksche borrel. Dat betekent dat terwijl we op het veld met ballen aan het gooien zijn, we weer de hoge-kwaliteitswijn mogen drinken en de prachtige hapjes mogen eten die normaal op de Maand'lijksche borrel geserveerd worden. 

Je kunt je samen met een partner inschrijven om mee te doen met het officiële "Spel met Ballen"-toernooi, en tegen andere teams te strijden om kans te maken op de felbegeerde beker. Wees wel alert, de inschrijflijst sluit de zondag voor de activiteit.

Mocht je nu geen zin hebben om mee te doen aan het spel, dan mag je natuurlijk ook gewoon naar het veld te komen om te genieten van de borrel.

Ongeveer een maand geleden heeft de BAC fantastisch achter de bar gestaan bij de BorrelXL. Hier heeft men kunnen genieten van heerlijk bier, viper, fris maar ook wijn. Helaas is er niet zoveel genoten van het laatste en dus heeft de BAC een overvloed van wijn (na ook een foutje van de inkoper).

Nu zijn wij geen I.V.V en willen we alleen een overvloed van bier hebben. Daarom hebben we besloten om het voor een promotie prijs van €5,00 per fles te verkopen. Je kan hiervoor naar een BAC'er te lopen en vragen of ze een paar flessen voor je willen pakken.

Op 28 juni start een nieuw volledig online editie van Wie is de Mol en we willen een kleine competitie organiseren om te kijken wie het beste is in het vinden van de Mol. 

Iedere week nadat de afleveringen online komen (2 per week op vrijdagen) zullen we een korte vragenlijst sturen met vragen over de Mol en je hebt tot de volgende week om deze vragen te beantwoorden.

Na slechts een paar weken komen we er op 19 juli achter wie de Mol was en dat is wanneer we onze winnaar ook bekend zullen maken.

Wie is de Mol is een Nederlandstalig programma, maar Engelstalige ondertitels verschijnen meestal snel online. Dus als je iemand kent die mee wilt doen maar nog niet goed genoeg Nederlands spreekt dan zou dat nog steeds mogelijk moeten zijn.

On the 4th of July, we will host the inauguration drink for the 43rd board of GEWIS! During the inauguration drink, a lot of external associations, the department board, GEWIS bodies and members can come to congratulate the new board. We will celebrate their installation with a night full of free beers and amazing memories.

For the inauguration drink, we do need a lot of volunteers. We have to empty the room, protect the board and guestbook during the drink and bring the board home after the drink. We would like to know whether you are available for any of these tasks. Please note: bringing the board home means you are sober. If you are available, please fill in this form.

The obligatory infomeeting, at which everything about the order committee will be explained, takes place on Wednesday June 19th from 12:40 till 13:20. The location will be announced later!

Note that for non-volunteers, the borrel starts around 19:00 (the internal part).
