Lunaris: The better way to produce printed circuit boardsIn this talk, Joost Sannen (embedded software architect at Sioux) will give an overview of the calibration algorithms that are critical for the operation of the Lunaris printer, which introduces a novel approach to printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturing by using inkjet technology for the imaging of this circuitry.This new method requires very accurate (~10um) placement of millions of ink drops. Because the machine operates in a highly cost driven market, most of its components have relatively high mechanical tolerances. This is compensated for by automated calibrations. After placement, a Lunaris machine can calibrate itself to the required accuracy without external measurements.The entire calibration process requires more than 15 steps, which are employing computer vision, solving thousands of equations and statistical analysis. An interesting use of mathematics and information technology in a far-from-trivial application.

Binnenkort is het weer zo ver! Dan organiseren ATHENA en B.O.O.M. in samenwerking met de BAC weer de Cocktail-Burger-Buitenborrel. ATHENA zal weer zorgen voor verschillende cocktails, waarbij je kunt kiezen uit een zoete en en niet zo zoete kaart, met elk drie verschillende cocktails. B.O.O.M zorgt weer voor lekkere burgers van de barbecue, en de BAC zal natuurlijk zorgen dat ook het vloeibare goud weer rijkelijk vloeit. Tot dan!

Dames en Heren, Madames et Monsieurs,

Het is ons een grote eer en een waar genoegen dat Dispuut "In Vino Veritas" u kan mededelen dat het allereerste Etiquettediner van GEWIS een feit is geworden en daarmee ook een datum heeft gekregen.

Gedurende deze avond zal Dispuut I.V.V u informeren over alle etiquette die men zou kunnen gebruiken aan de dinertafel, gedoceerd door de enige echte heer Van Beekveld, maar vooral ook, zoals nog nooit eerder vertoond, over de wijnetiquette, gepresenteerd door onze eigen, wereldberoemde Register Vinoloog Mgr. Sanders.

Tijdens deze avond zal Dispuut "In Vino Veritas" een gethematiseerd 3-gangendiner voor alle aanwezigen koken. Zoals u van ons mag verwachten, zal er ook voor de nodige dranken (vin) gezorgd worden. Gedurende dit 3-gangendiner, zal u leren hoe u zich heurt te gedragen tijdens een diner, bijvoorbeeld met uw toekomstige werkgever of de Koning der Nederlanden. Dit alles wordt u aangeboden voor slechts €27,50.

Dit I.V.V Etiquettediner zal plaatsvinden op woensdag 14 juni 2017 en er zijn 22 plaatsen voor enig GEWIS-lid, buiten hèt Dispuut. Daar het Dispuut veel geïnteresseerden verwacht, lichten we u hierbij in dat de inschrijflijst zal openen op 30 maart om 13:00 uur.

Wij hopen dat u net zo enthousiast bent over deze activiteit als Dispuut "In Vino Veritas”, en dat we u deze avond mogen begroeten.

Many of you have already seen the ``B.O.O.M. Buitenlands Weekend'' from up close, and those do not need to be convinced to participate this years edition again.

For those who are not yet familiar with the term ``B.O.O.M. Buitenlands weekend'', a brief description: Every year there is this one special weekend in which a group of adventurous students gather and travel to an exciting place somewhere in another country. During the days, some great activities will be offered and the nights are spent drinking some beers close by a fire and falling asleep inside a cozy tent.

This years edition will take place in the Belgian Ardennes, close to the picturesque village of Durbuy. During the weekend, we will participate in several activities, for example a Friday night activity, a scenic mountain bike tour, and a wonderful canoeing trip.

De door onze whisk(e)y experts nauwkeurig geselecteerde flessen vormen een diverse proeverij voor zowel kenner als nieuwkomer. Hiervoor zijn meerdere zware proefavonden nodig geweest, waardoor alleen de beste whisk(e)ys de uiteindelijke selectie hebben gehaald. Lieve GEWIS’ers,

Zijn jullie het ook helemaal zat om altijd maar weer die grijze haren te tellen? Lukt het nog steeds niet om een voedzame maaltijd op tafel te zetten zonder hulp van je moeder? Vind je volwassen zijn eigenlijk gewoon heel stom? Dan heb je geluk! Wij van EJC-17 bieden je namelijk de kans om voor één avond al je verantwoordelijkheden te vergeten en weer even in de huid van je jongere zelf te kruipen.

Bij deze ben je dan ook van harte uitgenodigd voor ons kinderfeestje! Op maandag 29 mei vanaf half 7 barst het feest los. Verschillende nostalgische spellen zullen gespeeld worden en er is zelfs een springkussen aanwezig! Omdat we weten dat kleuters meestal niet zoveel zakgeld van hun ouders krijgen, is de activiteit geheel gratis. Er wordt alleen van je verwacht dat je een goed humeur meebrengt.

De mogelijkheid is er om van tevoren met z’n allen te eten (friettafel!), maar hiervoor komt nog een aparte inschrijflijst. Wij hebben er al veel zin in en hopen jullie te zien op ons kinderfeestje!

Onder het motto "Niets is wat het lijkt" gaan de deelnemers opdrachten uitvoeren om geld te verdienen voor de groepspot. Dit geld is voor de winnaar die het antwoord weet op die ene vraag: Wie is de Mol? Eén van de deelnemers zal worden benaderd om als mol te fungeren gedurende het weekend. De mol zal elke opdracht proberen te saboteren en weet alles wat er gaat gebeuren. Om de zoveel opdrachten maken de deelnemers een test met vragen over de mol. De kandidaat die de meeste fouten maakt zal direct naar huis worden gestuurd. Alles wordt gefilmd en in het najaar uitgezonden bij GEWIS. Tijdens het weekend moet er ook worden gefilmd, gekookt en meegeholpen worden met de opdrachten. Hiervoor zijn we op zoek naar assistenten. Je kan je inschrijven als kandidaat of assistent. Mocht je liever mee willen als kandidaat, maar indien je wordt uitgeloot mee willen als assistent, kies dan de optie: kandidaat anders assistent. De kosten voor het weekend zijn 35 euro voor kandidaten en 37,50 euro voor assistenten. De eerste, tweede en derde afvaller zullen een gedeelte hiervan terugkrijgen. Ieder jaar organiseren de tien studieverenigingen van de TU/e, verenigd in de FSE, samen een dagactiviteit. Traditiegetrouw is dit een grootschalige borrel genaamde de Borrel XL waarop alle studieverenigingen samenkomen. Deze borrel, die plaatsvindt op dinsdag 23 mei 2017, vervangt de donderdagborrel die vervalt vanwege Hemelvaart later die week. De Borrel XL duurt van 16:00 tot 20:00 en vanaf 16:00 zal dan ook begonnen worden met muziek verzorgd door onze DJ’s Maarten Klijn en Rik Broers. Rond 18:00 zullen de bandjes Bottoms Up en MAVO de muziek overnemen. Gedurende de hele borrel is het ook mogelijk eten te verkrijgen, te weten pizza en friet.

Voorafgaand aan de Borrel XL zal de Lounge XL plaatsvinden. Deze begint om 12:30 en hierbij kunnen verschillende spellen worden gedaan in een relaxte sfeer. Met deze spellen kunnen consumptiemunten worden gewonnen voor de Borrel XL. Daarnaast kan men gratis ranja krijgen gedurende de pauze en bij aankoop van consumptiemunten voor de Borrel XL krijgt men een gratis broodje hamburger!

Folks, we’re gonna build a cantus and we all know nobody builds better cantusses than we do. Believe me, we’ll build it very inexpensively it’s gonna be super cheap. We will build a great, great cantus at ’t Lempke. it’s gonna be HUGE! And we’ll make the Mexicans pay for it (not really you do have to pay eight fifty), mark our words!On the 22nd of May EJC and I.V.V will organize a cantus from 8 to 11 pm. To make sure you’re not Mexican, you need to bring your ID. We will only accept the best 150 people to join us at this GREAT event, so use your tiny hands and be quick. De LIMO is een wiskundewedstrijd waarbij je opgaven maakt in teams van maximaal vier personen. Technical people look at security mostly from a technical standpoint. Are systems fully patched? Have SQL-injection problems been eliminated? Truth is, the technical aspect of security is just a small part of the problem. People are probably the biggest security problem to fix. Social engineering is conning people into giving you information or access to systems or buildings. It is, in most cases, far more easy than breaking in electronically. In this talk, we will look at what makes social engineering work, how to come up with working scenario's and how to try to avoid these problems. The lecture includes examples from actual social engineering assignments and some hilarious clips from the internet.

We are bringing Scandinavia to the TU/e!

Participate in COSMOS & SCIFI’s midsummer festival that takes place on the national day of Norway. Midsummer is one of the biggest events in Scandinavia where people celebrate the longest day of the year.During our outside event you have the chance to participate in different activities, such as Scandinavian games and a beautiful flower crown workshop. Completing several activities will be rewarded with a real Scandinavian drink (alcoholic or non-alcoholic). To really get ourselves into the midsummer mood we’ll set up a maypole and might start dancing around it as the evening goes on.

A midsummer celebration would be nothing without a BBQ and a few drinks. Therefore we will provide you with the opportunity to get food from the BBQ. The bar committee of GEWIS will also sell beer and soft drinks. The price for the food depends on the amount of people that want to BBQ but it can be expected somewhere around 5€. Please keep in mind that signing up for food means paying!

There are 20 places each for COSMOS and GEWIS (excluding SCIFI members). Don't worry if the event is full, sign up anyway and we'll put you on the waiting list. Also let us know if you are going to BBQ with us and whether you’d like to have the alcoholic or non-alcoholic version of the Scandinavian drinks. If you are planning to drink alcohol, don’t forget to bring your ID.

Are your plants always dying? Have you always wanted to make a super smart check-in system? This is your chance! On 17th of May 13:30-17:30, the training workgroup ft. the FYC’s organize a FREE workshop “Arduino: how to make your life easier”. There are only 30 spots available, so be sure to register quickly! The subscription list opens on Monday 1st of May at 12:00 on the GEWIS website. During the workshop an experienced trainer will tell you all about Arduino, NodeMCU and other cool microcontrollers. Afterwards you may take your incredible inventions home.

We have two possible projects you can hack away on: The first one is a device to (automatically) water your plants and the second one is a more creative exercise which involves creating a check-in system using RFID. We've got 15 of both, and it is first come, first serve.

If you are inexperienced, the plant watering device is better suited. Do you already have a bit of experience with Arduino? Then you can start hacking away on the RFID project!

We will supply you with all electrical components necessary, the only thing you have to bring yourself is a laptop.

De BAC is alweer druk bezig met het plannen van de lustrum week begin mei. Als onderdeel van deze week is op dinsdag 9 mei de excursie naar Schrobbelèr. We bezoeken de distilleerderij in Tilburg en maken kennis met het verhaal achter deze kruidenlikeur. We worden verwelkomd met koffie/thee en een Schrobbelèr bonbon, vervolgens krijgen we een rondleiding en wordt er het een en ander verteld over de geschiedenis, afsluitend is er een proeverij van drie Schrobbelèr. Dit programma is van ongeveer half 5 tot half 7. Er is een bus geregeld voor de heen en terugreis, deze vertrekt naar Tilburg om uiterlijk half 4, we zullen rond kwart over 3 vanuit GEWIS naar de bus lopen (deze staat bij de parkeerplaats bij MF). Zorg dat je op tijd bij de bus bent! In de bus zullen wij vervolgens rond lopen zodat iedereen zijn deelnemersbijdrage van 10 euro kan betalen. Denk er dus aan om 10 euro mee te nemen. Verder vertrekt de bus om 19.00 uur weer richting Eindhoven, de verwachting is dat we rond 20.00 uur weer bij GEWIS zullen zijn. Wij regelen een lekker broodje voor iedereen op de terugweg!

Creating future experiences by combining software and design thinking Luc Geurts is a Creative Director at Philips Design working in the Strategic Design team. He holds a Professional Doctorate in Engineering on Software Technology (PDEng ST) degree from the TU/e. He has broad experience combining Computer Science, User Interaction research and Design-driven innovation. He is passionate about new user interaction technologies and how they can change our everyday life. In his current role he leads a program that generates new concepts and patents in the area of personal health. Beste GEWIS'ser,

Een niet zo lange tijd geleden was er een klein groepje opportunisten. Ze waren bij GEWIS, hadden een borrel en waren velen sterke verhalen tegen elkaar aan het vertellen over hun buitenlandse ervaringen. Nadat er velen verhalen uitgebreid verteld waren, kwam er een geweldig idee ter tafel. Waarom kunnen we niet samen zo'n verhaal creëren? Want zoals we allemaal weten, een evenement wordt herrinnerd aan de verhalen die erover worden verteld, maar beleefd door de mensen die het meemaken. Niet lang daarna was "De Stuurgroep" gevormd en werd het idee omgezet in een concept. Nu twee maanden later presenteren wij met trots: Het BAC Buitenlands Weekend, editie Gent.

Voor dit weekend zullen wij alleen de absolute basis regelen. Wij zorgen dan ook voor een hostel en een bezoek aan de Delerium brouwerij. We verwachten van jullie dat jullie zorgen dat jullie in Gent zijn en dat jullie de geweldige verhalen creëren waaraan we dit prachtige weekend aan zullen herrinneren. The Operations Research Conference (ORC) is a collaboration of the study associations Asset|Econometrics, GEWIS and Industria, of respectively Econometrics & Operations Research in Tilburg, Applied Mathematics, Software/Web Science and Data Science, and Industrial Engineering in Eindhoven. On 26 April 2017, the second edition of the ORC will be organized. The discipline of Operations Research revolves around researching, developing and applying advanced mathematical, analytical models in order to facilitate the improvement of decision-making. This places Operations Research at the heart of many contemporary problems, helping organizations and companies create efficient and useful systems. Organizations in both the private and public sector have always relied on professionals using Operations Research for making informed, intelligent decisions. It thus has always had a strong connection with industry. Many companies make use of Operations Research in order to improve various processes, and therefore test and beat the limitations within their own company and within the market. Operations Research has always been the key element to go further, to innovate and to push the boundaries. Nowadays, with the ever increasing speed with which technology develops, the growing importance of globalization and a fast changing market, being able to think out of the box and beat the limits is essential. There are numerous ways to push boundaries, by recreating the way you think about logistics, by beating the infinite amount of available data, by being innovative in how and when to select personnel. Big Data is momenteel Big Business, maar wat is Big Data nu eigenlijk? In dit college zal er kort worden ingegaan op deze vraag, alsmede hoe Big Data in de praktijk nu al overal wordt ingezet. The masterclass provides an overview of the theory of information security with a lot of real-life examples and specific cases. We will discuss the relationship between security, IT-strategy and training/educational programs. Of course the revelations of Edward Snowden and the implications for security and IT-strategy won’t remain untouched and we will have a closer look at industrial automation and similar matters. Concrete examples of measures against so called advanced persistent threats, such as digital warfare and industrial espionage, will be discussed as well. Because nobody is boring enough to be clear of any secrets. Because everybody has got something to hide… Who is Arjen Kamphuis? Arjen Kamphuis studied physical science at the University of Utrecht and was an employee of IBM and worked for Twynstra Gudde as an IT-architect, trainer and IT-strategy advisor. He is a certified IT-auditor and information security expert (CISA, CISM). Arjen helps out companies, public institutions and a number of national governments to develop an IT-strategy that revolves around security. In order to keep his knowledge up to date he reads a megabyte of text every day and technical specialists, researchers and (former) spies brief him regularly with the latest information. Next to his job as advisor, he trains journalists and NGO-employees in practical information security and counter surveillance so they are able to operate safely in dangerous countries. At Brunel, Arjen essentially leads a team of information security specialists who work on digital security in leading organizations in The Netherlands on operational level as well as on policy level.

Who will be this year’s beer pong champion?Every year SCIFI hosts an event to answer this important question and we of course would not want to leave it unanswered this year. In the summer of 2018 committee Saffa will organize the biennial study tour. This time we have set our sights on South Africa where we will partake in many activities including, but not limited to, visits to many mathematics and computer science related universities and companies, visits to ‘Apartheid’-museums and even a small safari tour.

Any student is welcome to join, as long as you have obtained at least 60 ECTS at the time of registration (obtained at either the TU/e or other universities during your Bachelor and/or Master) and are currently studying at the department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the TU/e and will be during the summer of 2018*.

Since we aren’t able to convey all information via this post we would like to invite you to the information meeting which will take place on Wednesday March 29th during the lunch break (from 12h45 to 13h30) in Auditorium 9. There we will give a detailed presentation containing all necessary information including pricing, logistics and many more with the possibility to ask relevant questions.

Registration will be possible between March 29th and April 14th. To be able to register without problems we would like to ask you to prepare a curriculum vitae in advance. Lieve GEWIS’ers,

Zoals jullie misschien al weten organiseert ATHENA dit jaar een citytrip naar Brugge. Deze zal plaatsvinden op zaterdag 25 en zondag 26 maart 2017. De planning van het weekend is als volgt:We zullen zaterdagochtend om 7 uur vanaf de TU/e met auto’s vertrekken richting Brugge. Hier staat een stadswandeling op het programma, met keuze uit Choc’ Around the Clock (over de ins en outs van Belgische chocolade) en de Sneukelroute (over ouderwets Belgische snoepjes). Hierna gaan we door voor een bezoek aan brouwerij De Halve Maan. Voor de rest is het programma redelijk vrij om zelf Brugge te ontdekken. Zaterdagnacht zullen we verblijven in een hostel in het centrum waarna we zondagmiddag rond 1 uur weer richting Eindhoven zullen vertrekken.

Dus ben jij een grote fan van chocolade, of heb je altijd al het centrum van Brugge onveilig willen maken, dit is je kans! Schrijf je snel in! Er is een maximum aantal plaatsen van 40.

Maar, dat zou natuurlijk te eenvoudig zijn... vandaar dat je het resultaat tussendoor niet mag zien! Zodra de tijd voorbij is worden alle resultaten getoond, en kunnen we zien of er iemand ook maar enigszinds in de buurt is gekomen...

Wees gerust! Wij snappen ook wel dat voor sommige mensen dit veel te hardcore is. Daarom zorgen wij ervoor dat je wél alle errors te zien krijgt, en uiteraard kunnen wij je ook helpen wanneer dat nodig is. Je mag ook in teams meedoen, als je dat fijner vindt.

In fact, you do not need to wait weeks for the book shipment from the other end of the world; it is printed on demand on a machine so fast that it can produce thousands of different books per month. Hristina Moneva will share with you her typical working day, the range of challenges in different (embedded and system control) projects as well as her experiences with model-driven development. In your studies you learn a lot, but how you can apply what you learn at a company remains sketchy at best. Two graduates, one with a background in computer science and the other in applied mathematics will share their experiences with you, such as the step of student to professional and the role of a professional with your particular background. Also the problems that need to be solved will be discussed. How do you work with a codebase of 40 million lines of code? How does the software architecture help with this? What is the importance of mathematical models to a machine? Where do the mathematics and computer science meet and have to work together? These topics and the topics you want to know about will be investigated in this ASML lunch lecture.

In samenwerking met GENTS hebben wij een aantal pakketten samengesteld die je aan kunt laten meten op de pasdag. De experts van GENTS assisteren je met de juiste maat. Je hebt al een basispakket, bestaande uit een compleet rokkostuum exclusief schoenen, voor maar 135 euro. Dear GEWIS-members, are you a fan of speed and you want to show that you are almost as good as Max Verstappen? Do you want to show everybody that you are the fastest one around? Then join us on the trACk for the AC Karten. We will go to the karting trACk for two hours and you will only pay €10,- for approximately 20-25 minutes of karting (€8,- for freshmen). We will go to Valkenswaard for this ACtivity and we want to try to go there by car. Therefore we would also like to ask you if you have a car available to drive there. There is also the possibility to go there by bike, which means that it will take you approximately 45 minutes. It is possible to use the public transport, but we definitely don’t recommend it, because it will take longer. The ACtivity will begin at the trACk around 19:30, which means that the cycling group will leave at 18:30 at GEWIS. The ACtivity will end at the trACk at approximately 22:00, so everybody should be bACk in Eindhoven at 23:00. As usual, we also give you the possibility to have dinner with us for only €6,-. So, if you want to have the ride of your life, subscribe at the GEWIS-website!

Alles tussen logistiek en cyber security

Krijgen Wi-Fi gebruikers betere Wi-Fi als ze samenwerken? Is de geluidskwaliteit van telefoongesprekken hoog genoeg? Hoe gaat een hacker te werk en zijn systemen veilig? Hoe kun je wiskundige kennis gebruiken voor het detecteren van malware? Welke ontwikkelingen zijn er wat betreft de kwantumcomputer en wat kunnen we daar mee?

Al deze vraagstukken, en nog vele meer, komen aan bod binnen de afdeling ‘Cyber Security & Robustness’. In deze lunchlezing zal ik meer vertellen over de verschillende uitdagingen en ga ik dieper in op de vraag ‘Krijgen Wi-Fi gebruikers betere Wi-Fi als ze samenwerken?’. Ook zal Myrte De Juncker ingaan op haar afstudeer onderzoek, over het plannen van containers met real-time data.

Dit jaar zal er net als afgelopen jaren er het GEDWAAL (winter-)wandelweekend plaatsvinden op 18 en 19 februari. We vertrekken zaterdag de 18e naar een locatie in Nederland waar we ongeveer 25 kilometer gaan wandelen naar een blokhut waar we lekker winters zullen gaan eten. ’s Avonds hebben we nog een super toffe activiteit en zullen we ons onder het genot van een drankje vermaken met spelletjes. Op zondagochtend zullen we naar het dichtstbijzijnde station lopen en terugreizen naar Eindhoven.Hou jij van wandelen en heb je zin in een leuk weekend schrijf je dan nu in vanaf maandag 16 januari.

De belastingdienst beschikt over veel data van belastingplichtigen. Deze waardevolle data moeten we omzetten in informatie en daar moeten we zorgvuldig mee omgaan. In deze lunchlezing bespreken we drie onderwerpen om een inkijkje te geven hoe de belastingdienst dit doet en dan specifiek welke rol wiskunde en informatica hierin speelt. De drie onderwerpen zijn:

On January 9 the new season of De Wereld Draait Door (DWDD) will start, and GEWIS is invited to come to the studio. Sadly only fifteen people are allowed to come at the same time. How can we detect fraudulent behavior on our websites? Of any size? In real time? Hylke will explain how, by considering a user’s click path a followed process, ING applied a technique called process mining and adapted it to Spark Streaming. This resulting in near real-time fraud detection and analysis.

About our speaker: Hylke Hendriksen has been at ING for about two years now. He studied Computer Science at the Delft University of Technology.

Beste GEWIS'ers,

Natuurlijk wilt u goed voorbereid naar het gala ter ere van het 7e Lustrum van GEWIS. Wij bieden iedereen de mogelijkheid de basis van twee verschillende dansen te leren tijdens onze dansworkshop welke gegeven wordt door Melissa en Collin. De workshop bestaat uit drie avonden, namelijk maandag 6, 13 en 20 februari van 17.30 tot 19.00 uur. De eerste twee avonden zullen plaatsvinden in de Senaatszaal, de laatste avond zal uitgeweken moeten worden naar de Blauwe Zaal, beiden in Auditorium. De locaties staan ook aangegeven in de GEWIS Google Calendar, mocht er twijfel ontstaan.

Elke week komen zowel de quickstep als de cha cha aan bod. Het kan natuurlijk voorkomen dat u een van de drie momenten verhinderd bent, dit zal niet heel erg zijn, maar bij aanwezigheid van de volle workshop leert u wel het meest.

Deelname aan de workshop is gratis, maar vergeet niet een kaartje te kopen voor het gala zelf!

At the Career Street you can get some tips and tricks from professionals to help you make a stunning impression at the Career Expo and beyond. The Career Street is a fun way to make you feel more comfortable at the Career Expo and during your future career. The Career Street is free of charge and registration is not needed. On Saturday the 4th of February a new group of Erasmus Exchange students will join our lovely University. As GEWIS we have the privilege to give them an introduction about the Dutch Culture and the TU/e. In order to get the Exchange Intro to be a succes, we need a buddy for every exchange students.

A buddy gets into contact with the student before he or she arrives in the Netherlands. The exchange student then has the opportunity to ask questions about anything. Besides mailing the person you will meet your buddy on the 4th of February and have an amazing day together.

During the day you will have a small talk by the faculty, followed by a talk about the Dutch culture (given by an exchange student). Afterwards there is a lunch, after which there are some games planned. Around 16:00 the games will be finished and we will start a SCIFI themed Pub Quiz, followed by food and drinks. At the end of the day we are going to party at Stratum!

We need at least 15 buddies and I hope you can be part of them! If you do not want to become a buddy, but want to be present during the day, you are welcome to help. Please note that all drinks and food will be free of charge.

On February the 20th, a crash course is given by Alten. Bram Dil comes to the TU/e to give a presentation about localization of wireless devices with a focus on unobtrusive localization. Unobtrusive localization means that the wireless device and its user are not aware of being located. For example, wifi-enabled smartphones transmit signals that can be intercepted for localization purposes. This system is for example employed by several stores in the Netherlands to investigate customer behavior. A similar system was also implemented and deployed at the UT for several years for crowd monitoring.

The systems named above only work when Wifi is enabled on the smartphone, however one can also intercept GSM signals transmitted by a smartphone using a fake cell tower. A fake cell tower emulates the behavior of a legitimate cell tower to fool unaltered smartphones to connect with it. At Liu, they used this localization system in search and rescue operations and localizing rhino poachers.With the rise of the Internet of Things, there are billions of wireless devices that require localization, which is still a topic of research. The goal is to maximize localization performance with minimum effort. Bram believes that similar unobtrusive techniques can be used to obtain this goal. For those new to the topic, he gives an overview on the topic, for the hobbyists he gives pointers to make such a system themselves. The crash course will start at 14.00 in MF6. Afterwards he will be available for talks, questions and possible graduation projects while enjoying a nice drink.

As you might have heard at the last GM, a company has asked us for anonymized data of the SuSOS accounts of our members. With this data, they will generate slick graphs and try to find remarkable and fun Did you know facts, such as the number of hotdogs a person eats in correlation with the number of beers he drinks.

While the GM has made a decree upon the fact that we are allowed to provide the company with this data (under contract, of course), we want to give you the opportunity to `opt out’. If you opt out, your data will be removed from what we provide to the company. If you don’t opt out, it will be anonymized and send, as specified in the contract. Opting out is possible until the 31st of January.

Zoals jullie misschien al weten organiseert ATHENA dit jaar een citytrip naar Brugge. Deze zal plaatsvinden op zaterdag 25 en zondag 26 maart 2017. De planning van het weekend is als volgt:We zullen zaterdagochtend om 7 uur vanaf de TU/e met de bus vertrekken richting Brugge. Hier staat een stadswandeling op het programma, met keuze uit Choc’ Around the Clock (over de ins en outs van Belgische chocolade) en de Sneukelroute (over ouderwets Belgische snoepjes). Hierna gaan we door voor een bezoek aan brouwerij De Halve Maan. Voor de rest is het programma redelijk vrij om zelf Brugge te ontdekken.Zaterdagnacht zullen we verblijven in een hostel in het centrum waarna we zondagmiddag rond 1 uur weer richting Eindhoven zullen vertrekken.Dus ben jij een grote fan van chocolade, of heb je altijd al het centrum van Brugge onveilig willen maken, dit is je kans! Nu het einde van 2016 nadert en het gebruikelijk is om rond deze tijd te beginnen met het maken van goede voornemens, kunnen wij als het Dispuut "In Vino Veritas" niet achterblijven. Daarnaast is het geen geheim dat “In Vino Veritas” van gezelligheid en een Bourgondische levensstijl houdt. Een van onze goede voornemens is dan ook als volgt: “Het vaker creëren ,en genieten, van gezelligheid binnen GEWIS”. Omdat wij binnen "In Vino Veritas" onze goede voornemens zeer serieus nemen zullen wij 16-01-2017, een Maand'lijksche borrel (waar gezelligheid altijd hoog in het vaandel staat) organiseren. U bent hier alle vanaf vijf uur 's middags van harte welkom. Tijdens deze borrel zult u kunnen genieten van verscheidende cocktails die gebaseerd zijn op Prosecco, aangezien bubbels (nog steeds) ideaal bij deze tijd van het jaar passen. Echter, dit houdt niet in dat er op de Maand’lijksche borrel conventionele wijnen zullen ontbreken. Welcome… to the great Murder Nipping Match! In this M&M, you will compete with other members of GEWIS, to show your skill in stealth, cunning, endurance and of course nipping. At the start of the match, you will all receive a single target and a piece of equipment. Your goal: pinch your target (unnoticed!) with the equipment given to you. Once you have eliminated your target, the target hands you his target, and you can carry on. However, if you are spotted during your pinching by another person, the murder is invalid. Your target will stay alive, and you can try to murder him some other time.

Eindelijk is het zo ver dat de Sint ons land weer heeft verlaten, zodat wij ons volledig kunnen storten op het gezellige kerstfeest! Deze donkere dagen zoeken we de gezelligheid bij elkaar, om zo bijvoorbeeld te kunnen genieten van heerlijke maaltijden, mooie lichtjes en natuurlijk een lekker drankje.

Zo vlak voor iedereen het studeren voor twee weken op een lager pitje zet, om zo meer tijd met familie en vrienden te kunnen besteden aan het verorberen van noemenswaardige hoeveelheden eiwitten, organiseert de BAC een gepast afscheid. We zullen deze mooie dagen inleiden met een ware Kerstgalaborrrrel. Mooie lampjes, lekkere bubbels en niet te vergeten de gezellige deuntjes.

Wij regelen de borrel, rest jou alleen om in gepaste kleding bij de ingang te verschijnen!

In samenwerking met SPV Blue organiseert ATHENA dit jaar een workshop waar je voor €2,- alle basisprincipes van de paalsport onder de knie kunt krijgen (of niet). Er zijn twee tijdsloten met een workshop van anderhalf uur, waarbij je per tijdslot met 15 anderen in de paal kunt hangen. Bij veel interesse komt er nog een derde tijdslot, dus schrijf je vooral in!

Steeds meer data is beschikbaar, maar hoe zorg je ervoor dat data juist is en correct wordt gepubliceert. Vanuit Capgemini werken Arnoud en Lydia op dit moment als Stibo STEP Developers. STEP is een multidomein Master Data Management (MDM) platform. Het zorgt ervoor dat afzonderlijke bedrijfssystemen in een organisatie geintegreerd worden. Informatie rondom producten, klanten, leveranciers, medewerkers, assets en locaties wordt vanuit diverse bronnen samengevoegd, om er vervolgens bruikbare inzichten uit te filteren. Deze informatie kan weer gebruikt worden voor backend systemen en voor on- en offline kanalen.

This lunch lecture is different than the ones you are used to. This time it is not a big company, but a smaller, but fast growing, start-up company founded by TU/e students. They started of with 8 Computer science students, and now their headcount is over 40.Their goal is to become the leading mobile adherence solution enabling up to a billion people worldwide. They tackle the issue of medication non-adherence, which is a complicated worldwide problem with costs estimated above $500B. For instance; in the Netherlands 3M people depend on multiple medicines daily. Their product, MedApp, is an online, mobile medicine platform, The App provides smart alarms to take your medication, patient information leaflets, and price indications and way more.Are you curious how you can begin a start-up yourself? Edwin Hermkens will tell about his experiences in starting a business (possible while still studying) and how to quickly learn from your inevitable mistakes.

Lieve leden,

Vorig jaar zijn we met een heleboel GEWIS’ers naar Baarn afgereisd, om daar in de TV studio van ‘Weet Ik Veel?!’ plaats te nemen. We probeerden natuurlijk allemaal uit volle macht om de beste student uit de zaal te worden, maar helaas lukte dit ons geen van allen. Teleurgesteld waren we zeer zeker niet, aangezien bij iedereen het enthousiasme van de leuke dag en de geweldige ervaring overheerste!

Omdat het vorig jaar een groot succes was, en we allemaal zo enthousiast waren, mogen we dit jaar nog een keer meedoen met het TV-programma ‘Weet Ik Veel?!’! We zijn uitgenodigd om op vrijdag 2 December in de namiddag/avond weer de opnames bij te wonen. Linda de Mol zal diverse quizvragen voor ons paraat hebben, en wij gaan de strijd aan met andere studenten en 3 BN’ers.

Op de woensdagavond van ons lustrum is het tijd om een oud Limburgs spel weer tevoorschijn te halen. Beugelen is een spel waar een bal van ruim 4 kg met een houten schopje door de beugel gespeeld moet worden. Denk jij dat deze activiteit vooral fysieke arbeid is en daardoor echt niet door de beugel kan? Om te kijken hoe goed jullie bakskills zijn is er op deze dag de hele dag (behalve de pauze) de mogelijkheid om deze vlaaien met een groepje van ongeveer 6 personen klaar te maken. GEWIS gaat naar Praag! Maar hoe snel, dat moeten we nog afwachten... Als je meegaat met GELIFT dan kun je niet alleen een geweldige liftwedstrijd verwachten, maar ook een goedkope citytrip naar maar liefst twee steden! Wat je krijgt:

Vrijdag: liftend in tweetallen gaan we naar Frankfurt. Bij aankomst is er de gelegenheid om te genieten van het geweldige uitgaansleven ter plaatse.

Zaterdag: zetten we onze wedstrijd voort richting Praag. Aankomst in Praag zal rond etenstijd zijn, waar het eerst arriverende koppel de GELIFT wisseltrofee in ontvangst mag nemen. In de avond maken we de stad onveilig, en uiteindelijk slapen we in een jeugdherberg.

Zondag: heb je de hele dag om Praag te ontdekken. De commissie zal zorgen voor wat leuke suggesties, maar het is ook prima als je op eigen houtje de stad in wilt. Aan het eind van de middag nemen we het vliegtuig terug naar Nederland, zodat we op tijd in de avond terug zijn in Eindhoven.

Lieve leden,

Bij GEWIS wordt er altijd erg veel gekaart, van Spades tot aan Hartenjagen. Een kaartspel dat binnen GEWIS echter niet zo vaak gespeeld wordt is Bridge. Dit wordt vaak een beetje gezien als een spel voor oude mensen, maar het schijnt een erg leuk tactisch kaartspel te zijn voor iedereen!

Om GEWIS bekend te maken met Bridge, zal er op 4 verschillende donderdagmiddagen in kwartiel 2 (vóór de borrel) een bridgecursus plaatsvinden. Ervaren Bridgers zullen het spel uitleggen, beginnende bij de basis en opbouwend naar een meer gevorderd niveau met slimme tips & tricks. Het is niet aan te raden een les te missen, aangezien je dan een flinke achterstand opbouwt. Mocht je een les echt niet kunnen, neem dan even contact op met het bestuur.

Mijn naam is Marc Kepers en ik werk bij Achmea als analist. In de periode 1994-2000 heb ik Technische Wiskunde gestudeerd in Eindhoven en ben lid geweest van GEWIS. Graag vertel ik jullie in de lunchlezing wat je met je wiskunde of informatica opleiding kunt doen bij Achmea. Ik laat een voorbeeld zien van een social media analyse en vertel over het klantwaardemodel. One of the biggest events of the year is near. The SNiC will take place on the 15th of November and this year it is called VirtualIT. It will introduce you to the world of virtual reality, virtualized interfaces, augmented reality, VR and test and developers tools. The congress will be at Central Studios in Utrecht, and bus transport will be arranged from Eindhoven to Central Studios and back. Eindhoven’s signature light festival GLOW is back and we welcome you to join us on a walking tour of all the awesome exhibits around the city center and our university campus! Together we will explore the light installations, sculptures, projections and performances that around 40 light artists have created to please your eyes.

On Monday, the 14th of November, we will start from Metaforum’s Markthal at 19:30, and go through the standard walking route.

Please note that there may be one or two performances that have an entrance fee. So please bring some money for show tickets and/or for any refreshments if you would like to buy. It is recommended to carry your TU/e campus card, just in case there are any discounts for students. Also recommended is to download the GLOW app from the official website http://www.gloweindhoven.nl/ where you can also findout more about this year and previous years’ exhibits.

Let’s hope the weather gods are in a good mood and allow us to have an amazing time!

Zoals je misschien al weet is dit jaar het zevende lustrum van GEWIS. Er zullen dit jaar vele activiteiten zijn om deze bijzondere gebeurtenis te vieren. Een van deze activiteiten is een heus lustrum weekend. Gedurende het weekend zijn er vele verschillende spelletjes, waar rekening is gehouden met zeer verschillende interesses. Dus het maakt niet uit of je meer houdt van fysiek of mentale spelletjes of liever binnen dan wel buiten bent, voor iedereen is er genoeg te beleven. Want het belangrijkste is natuurlijk dat we met z’n allen een mooie tijd hebben.

Dit lustrumweekend staat, net als de rest van het lustrum, in het thema van diving deep. Hoe het thema naar voren zal komen, zal tijdens het weekend pas duidelijk worden. Dus ben erbij!

De prijs van het weekend is inclusief eten, drinken, een bed (zonder beddengoed) en vervoer.Wat betreft het vervoer, we willen graag met auto’s naar de locatie. Om die reden vragen we aan te geven of je tijdens het weekend een auto tot je beschikking hebt en hoeveel personen hier dan inpassen.

Deelname gaat op volgorde van inschrijving, er zijn 75 plaatsen beschikbaar en vol is vol.

An introduction on how electronic financial markets work. Optiver started business as a single trader on the floor of Amsterdam’s options exchange. Today, they are at the forefront of trading and technology and make markets in a wide range of financial products. They use their own capital, at their own risk, to trade on major financial markets around the world. Optiver’s innovative trading systems are key to their success, enabling them to respond swiftly to every change in the market and this is where the Tech department comes into play. During the guest lecture, Optiver will discuss the basics of trading at exchanges: e.g. what does an order book look like and how are buyers and sellers matched? How do trading firms connect to exchanges? What kind of network infrastructure and protocols are being used? Lastly, the importance of low latency systems for market making firms is explained and what kind of technologies are generally used to achieve low latencies. De eerste tentamenweek is al nabij. Het is natuurlijk belangrijk om af en toe even te stoppen met studeren en stoom af te blazen. Wij bieden jullie hiervoor de ideale gelegenheid! 24 oktober organiseert de AC een gezellige bowling ACtiviteit. Wij vertrekken om 18:45 vanuit GEWIS en beginnen met bowlen om 19:30. Dit jaar zullen wij anderhalf uur gaan bowlen! Dus genoeg tijd om eventjes wat stress weg te bowlen en natuurlijk jouw skills te laten zien. Meedoen aan deze ACtiviteit kost €3 voor eerstejaars en €4 voor ouderejaars.

Je kunt je ook inschrijven voor de eetlijst, om vooraf bij GEWIS te eten, zodat je niet bowlt met een lege maag. Dit zal zijn om 17:30 en kost €6.

Dinsdag 11 oktober, vanaf 5 uur 's middags, wordt u allen verwelkomt door hét Dispuut "In Vino Veritas" bij een Maand'lijksche borrel.Hierbij zal een heuse proeverij plaatsvinden, waarbij verschillende versterkte wijnen zullen worden geserveerd.Het versterken van wijnen zorgt voor verlengde houdbaarheid, en maakte daarmee eeuwenlang vervoer van wijn over lange afstanden mogelijk.Om deze gedenkwaardige techniek te celebreren, wordt er een selectie bestaande uit zowel gedestilleerde wijnen als "Vin doux Natural" geschonken.Uiteraard wordt er tevens een waardig aanbod aan conventionele wijnen geserveerd, naast onder meer overheerlijke hapjes en prachtige muziek.

Get to know Eindhoven in a different light! Join SCIFI’s lichtjesroute bike tour through the city and discover how Eindhoven’s streets are lit up to celebrate its liberation.

The tour starts at 19:30 and ends at approximately 21:00 and is free of cost. We will gather in Metaforum markthal and bike through the standard lichtjes route, going through the North and then covering the Southern parts. You are free to join in or drop out anytime you like.

A lecture by Yuriy Savelyev who studied at the TU/e and now works for Prodrive Technologies. Prodrive Technologies is a fast growing technology oriented company delivering high-tech products to customers around the world. We are a company employing over 700 FTE (300+ FTE in development) with an average age of 28 years.. We believe in the strength of young developers taking responsibility in inventing and developing state of the art products for our customers. One of the fields software engineers at Prodrive Technologies are active in is warehouse automation. Almost all warehouse processes are defined by custom-made software, following the “define and create our own dream process” principle of the company. Projects discussed during the meeting involve not only bookkeeping of electronic component stocks, but also interfacing with mechanical storage machines as large as a building, heuristics for efficient order picking, user interface programming and elegant back-end software architectures. One of the team members will share the enthusiasm for the freedom and creativity of being an (academic) software engineer at Prodrive Technologies and the path of discovery in applying logic, process algebra, algorithmic thinking, domain-driven design, functional programming, event-driven and geographically distributed architectures and other fundamental or cutting-edge techniques in some of the projects. Long, long ago, a small town named Miller’s Hollow was infested with hungry werewolves. The civilians in the town relentlessly hunted down every single one of them. This year, on September 13th, the AC organizes a roleplaying event, where we will reenACt these dreadful times in a game of Werewolves of Miller’s Hollow (Weerwolven van wACkerdam). Whether you are an experienced player who just loves the thousand different roles, or haven’t the foggiest what the game is about, you are all kindly invited to join us! In addition, a shorter version of the game will be present, should you be one of the first to die. The ACtivity will start at around 18.30 and is completely free, except for the optional dinner at GEWIS at around 17.30. This will cost you €6,-

Op vrijdag 2 september 2016 arriveert er een groep internationale Erasmusstudenten op de TU/e campus om een geweldige intro-dag te beleven!Deze internationale studenten zullen hier voor minimaal een half jaar komen studeren, maar ze weten nog helemaal niks over Nederland en over onze universiteit.Om deze studenten een vliegende start te geven en ze te helpen zich thuis te voelen hier, wordt deze intro-dag georganiseerd. Iedere internationale student die deelneemt wordt gekoppeld aan een student van hier, een buddy! En daarvoor zoeken we jou! Je zult van tevoren al in contact komen met jou internationale student, ze kunnen je dan al vragen stellen over de universiteit of over Nederland en onze cultuur. Op 2 september zul je je buddy dan in het echt ontmoeten en neem je ze mee naar alle activiteiten gedurende deze intro-dag.Buddy worden is geheel gratis en we gaan die dag leuke activiteiten doen!Dus wil jij buddy worden?
