Lezing “hacken” Tijdens deze lezing willen we je kennis laten maken met de wereld van cyber waarin we vertellen wie we zijn en wat wij doen. The activity will be an outside activity and it will be held at the Simon Stevin field, a little outside the Markthal. So if you want to join the activity, subscribe here!

Many of you have already seen the ``B.O.O.M. Buitenlands Weekend'' from up close, and those do not need to be convinced to participate this year's edition again.

For those who are not yet familiar with the term ``B.O.O.M. Buitenlands weekend'', a brief description: Every year there is this one special weekend in which a group of adventurous students gathers and travel to an exciting place somewhere in another country. During the days, some great activities will be offered and the nights are spent drinking some beers close by a fire and falling asleep inside a cozy tent.

This years edition will take place in the Belgian Ardennes, close to the picturesque village of Durbuy. During the weekend, we will participate in several activities, for example, a Friday night activity, one or multiple outdoor activities of your choice, and a wonderful secret activity on Sunday.

The subscription list is open! For now, we have a total of 50 spots, this might be increased based on the amount of interest.

(Software) uitdagingen bij ASML ASML is een leverancier van machines die gebruikt worden in de halfgeleider industrie. Deze zogenaamde scanners worden gebruikt bij het produceren van chips. Om aan de steeds hogere eisen voor nauwkeurigheid en een hogere doorvoersnelheid te voldoen worden onderdelen, kalibratie methoden en aansturingen verbeterd. Veel van deze verbeteringen vereisen ook wijzigingen in de besturingssoftware van deze machines. Daarnaast worden met complexe algoritmen, onvolkomenheden in de mechanica gecompenseerd. Wat zijn daarbij de uitdagingen? Hoe ontwikkelen we de software voor deze machines? Wat komt er allemaal bij kijken? Hoe is het om bij ASML te werken?

Veel studenten ondervinden regelmatig stress tijdens tentamenweken of met opkomende deadlines. Hoewel stress nuttig kan zijn, zorgt teveel stress ervoor dat je resultaten minder worden en kan het zelfs slecht zijn voor je gezondheid. Daarom organiseert TRAIN de training Omgaan met stress.

Omgaan met stress bestaat uit drie losse trainingen tijdens de lunchpauze die gegeven worden in mei en juni. We hebben de onderwerpen zo verdeeld dat elke ook training los te volgen is, maar als het mogelijk is raden we je aan om ze alle drie te doen.

Deel drie van deze reeks zal gaan over hoe je mindfullness kan gebruiken om stress tegen te gaan, het klinkt heel zweverig, maar dat is het niet. Het is een krachtige manier om even uit de drukte te kunnen stappen.

De trainingen worden verzorgd door Drs. Annemarie Vaarkamp van de Binnenkamer en zullen worden gegeven in het Engels. Let op: er zijn 30 plekkenw beschikbaar. Kosteloos afmelden is mogelijk tot 24 uur tot de training . Bij afmelding na deze datum of bij het niet komen opdagen tijdens de training worden er kosten in rekening gebracht van € 20.

Altijd al eens met grote rode ballen willen spelen of van grote hoogte in het water willen duiken? Dan is dit je kans, want de AC organiseert AC Wipeout. Een dag vol met allerlei uitdagende obstakels waarvan je er misschien wel een paar herkent van tv. Het overwinnen van deze obstakels zal niet voor iedereen weggelegd zijn er zal gebruik moeten worden gemaakt van behendigheid maar zeker ook van tACtiek.

Als je beschikking hebt tot een auto, neem deze dan vooral mee (wij vergoeden de reiskosten) want het OV naar de loCAtie is heel vervelend. We zullen om 12:30 vertrekken met de auto vanaf de TU/e, en komen rond 18:30 terug in Eindhoven.Vergeet ook geen zwemspullen mee te nemen, wat te drinken en een avontuurlijk humeur!

Let op! Er kunnen maximaal 42 mensen meedoen aan deze ACtiviteit. We werken met een reservelijst, dus schrijf je vooral in, ook al zit het vol.

In 5 weeks we know which team at GEWIS the best table football players of this year will be. Everybody has a chance, because we play with the rules of the FIFA World Cup tournament. First we play in groups. The best teams of the groups play against each other to fight for the finals. When you lose, you're out, when you win, you're one step closer to the prize! Even if you play daily, regularly or not at all, this tournament is something for you! At the end of the tournament, the finals will be played between the two top teams. They will fight for the title and the prize of course. When a match has been played, you can write your scores down at a form at the table football table at GEWIS. Don't forget! We play with the rules of GEWIS. If you don't know them, you can ask someone who plays regularly. They know them for sure. You can subscribe with a teammate and a teamname. Digiscanner: The architecture of a real-time vision application. The DigiScanner is a hand-held scanner for orthodontic use. It creates a 3D-model of the jaw using structured light. To go from camera-image to 3D-model, we use several vision algorithms from multiple sources. In developing the application, an architecture was required that is modular and flexible, so we could experiment with multiple ways of combining the different algorithms. In addition, we need all the performance we can get out of our x86 system. This means sharing memory between modules and an effective multi-threading strategy. In this talk, Sioux presents the architecture we developed for this application and show how it combines modularity, maintainability and performance in a single design. About the speaker Koen Rutten is senior software engineer at Sioux. He studied both mathematics and computer science at Utrecht University. He works at Sioux on vision algorithms for embedded applications, with a specialisation on ARM and x86.

D3.JS library to visualize business data As a travel industry software solutions supplier, we have experience with generating attractive commercial web pages. A need to visualize internal business data lead us to discover D3.JS. This library enables attractive visualizations of various data sources in a browser. Within our company this is a different technology than what we are used to - building pages for customers wanting to book a trip or holiday (with ASP.NET MVC, Angular and CanJS). In this presentation we show the results of our first experiments with this D3.JS library. This lunch lecture is interesting for students in both Computer Science and Mathematics, since we will dive into topics related to software engineering and data science. The goal of this training is to learn the basics of InDesign such that after this training you possess the knowledge to customize your own documents. During this training you will learn how to set up a document in InDesign, how to use the different tools that InDesign has to offer, how to make use of paragraph and character styles and of course how to export your document for actual printing.

Cars are rapidly becoming more complex and with that the amount of software is increasing as well. For each function in the car, multiple components have to work together closely. To cope with the complexity of automotive software a standardized software architecture is developed: Autosar. We are developing a system to wirelessly charge vehicles and we will present the challenges that have to be faced. Dit is de inschrijflijst voor training (1/3) van de driedelige serie aan lunchpauze trainingen. De inschrijflijst voor delen (2/3) en (3/3) gaan open op maandag 14 mei om 13:30.

Veel studenten ondervinden regelmatig stress tijdens tentamenweken of met opkomende deadlines. Hoewel stress nuttig kan zijn, zorgt teveel stress ervoor dat je resultaten minder worden en kan het zelfs slecht zijn voor je gezondheid. Daarom organiseert TRAIN de training Omgaan met stress. Omgaan met stress bestaat uit drie losse trainingen tijdens de lunchpauze die gegeven worden in mei en juni. We hebben de onderwerpen zo verdeeld dat elke ook training los te volgen is, maar als het mogelijk is raden we je aan om ze alle drie te doen. Deel twee en drie zijn op 28 mei en 4 juni respectievelijk. Deel één van deze reeks zal gaan over wat stress is en welke fysieke impact stress maakt op je lichaam. De trainingen worden verzorgd door Drs. Annemarie Vaarkamp van de Binnenkamer en zullen worden gegeven in het Engels. Let op: er zijn 30 plekken beschikbaar. Kosteloos afmelden is mogelijk tot 24 uur tot de training . Bij afmelding na deze datum of bij het niet komen opdagen tijdens de training worden er kosten in rekening gebracht van € 20.

Onder het motto "Niets is wat het lijkt" gaan 12 kandidaten een weekend lang opdrachten doen om geld te verdienen voor de pot. 1 kandidaat zal echter zijn uiterste best doen om dit te voorkomen. Deze mol zal proberen ongezien de opdrachten saboteren en aan de andere kandidaten is het de taak om hem te ontmaskeren.

Over the last couple of months, the introduction committee has been working very hard to plan an amazing introduction week for all new students, just like last years! However, an introduction week cannot be organized by us alone: we need intro parents that take good care of the new students, also called intro kids. We would like you, as a member of GEWIS, to be an intro parent for the upcoming introduction week! You do not need to have any experience with the introduction week. If you’ve never experienced it yourself, you’re more than welcome to join!

Do you want to relive your introduction week while also helping new students get acquainted with the TU/e and GEWIS? Then surely register as an intro parent! Note that you need to register as a pair of intro parents, so find a friend that wants to join you and register together at rex.gewis.nl (using your GEWIS credentials).Subscribing and participating is free, but you will not automatically be assigned as an intro parent. Usually, due to popularity, we randomly choose pairs of intro parents. Once you’re registered, you’ll get a message in a few weeks whether you are accepted or not.

As a final note, the intro week starts on Monday 20th of August and ends at Friday 24th of August. Once you’re registered, please keep this week free in your agenda. Moreover, you will have an official training to become an intro parent on Saturday 18th of August. Keep that date free as well. It is obligatory to be present.

We are a small business employing six people, of which five TU/e engineers (mathematics and computer science).

AlgebraKiT offers an online system for interactive mathematics, used by educative math publishers. Our tools enable interactive exercises with step-by-step evaluation, hints, error feedback and unlimited training.

During this lecture we will discuss the key elements that make AlgebraKiT unique in interactive mathematics. Applications like Wolfram Alpha are used in abundance to solve pretty much any mathematical problem in the blink of an eye, but use theory way too complex for a high school student to understand. Our application is built from the perspective of a student, using only the knowledge he or she has at any given time in their education. We will talk in more detail about the challenges that arise with this approach.

We will also discuss the extensive range of additional requirements that apply to offer our solution to large publishers. We show how we set up our architecture and how we organise development with a small team.

Monday, the 23rd of April, another brainstorm session organized by AVW160 (General (Members) Meeting Taskforce 160) will take place. The purpose of this AVW is to prospect and formulate a multi-annual vision for GEWIS. The subject of this session will be: the board, an advisory and supervision council and internal and external communication. Consider this as a prior information notice. In the coming week, the AVW will come up with a document containing the topics that will be discussed during this brainstorm session and preparation material.

The boys are back in town, and we're taking you to yet another boardgame convention! After the great hit of the Eindhoven boardgame convention, we're going a bit further away to attend the Zuiderspel in Veldhoven!

Who will be this year’s Beer Pong Champion?To figure this out, SCIFI will host the final version of the SCIFI Social Pong, on the 21st of March! In a real Beer Pong Tournament, we will find out who will make it to the finale, and who will be crowned the SCIFI Social Pong Champion for the rest of their lives! The day will look as follows: you will be welcomed at the Natlab with some coffee and tea around 9.30, after which we will all start with the opening lecture given by Bert Zwart. This lecture will be about the mathematical problems which occur in rare events in power grids, such as failures and blackouts. After this lecture the group will be divided over the first two parallel lectures. One of these lectures will be given by Andreas Hülsing and will be about online privacy in a post-quantum world. The other lecture will be given by Jules Kruijswijk about the multi-armed bandit algorithm. This is an adaptation to the one-armed bandit (aka slotmachines), which aims to maximize your profits at these machines.

After these lectures, it is time to have lunch, during which you will have the possibility to visit the stands of companies to get to know more about them. When we have all eaten enough, you can choose between three workshops; Itility will give you a challenge to solve a problem with a given data set and algorithm, Optiver will play a game that will give you insight how mathematical and analytical skills are practically applied in a trading firm, and TNO will let you work on a current, modern day case, where using mathematical knowledge is the key to solving the problem. When the workshops are finished, there will be time to grab a cup of coffee or tea and a snack, before we will go to the last round of lectures.

First, there will be the second parallel lecture session this time with lectures given by Björn Baumeier and the Belastingdienst. Björn will talk about the challenges of multiscale molecular modeling, and the Belastingdienst will explain the mathematical technics behind money and informationstreams. Note, the talk of the Belastingdienst will be given in Dutch. Following to this parallel session will be the closing lecture, given by Deloitte, which will be about data analytics in machine learning. The day will be concluded with a social drink.

On the 19th of March starting from 18:00 (or later) at GEWIS the B.O.O.M. geocache 2018 will take place. Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache hidden at that location.This year we are going to explore the history of Eindhoven in more Depth. During the geocache you will visit many different points of interest in Eindhoven and obtain some interesting information. Furthermore the way will lead you along a couple of pubs, thus feel free to take a break and drink some beers!

The purpose of this AVW is to prospect and formulate a multi-annual vision for GEWIS. The subject of this session will be: the GEWIS identity and culture. Consider this as a prior information notice. As soon as possible, the AVW will come up with a document containing the topics that will be discussed during this brainstorm session.

Lieve GEWIS'ers,

"Er gaat niets boven Groningen!" is natuurlijk een bekend gezegde, ATHENA biedt jullie de mogelijkheid om dit te ervaren. In het weekend van 2 tot en met 4 maart organiseert ATHENA een weekendje naar Groningen. Tijdens dit weekend hebben we een slaapplek in een hostel voor jullie geregeld, op ongeveer 10 minuten lopen van het centrum. Al het nodige bedlinnen is inbegrepen, dus je hoeft je eigen slaapzak niet mee te nemen. Op vrijdagavond zullen we beginnen met een kroegentocht, waarschijnlijk samen met Cover en FMF (wanneer dit niet samen met hen is, dan organiseren we onze eigen kroegentocht). De volgende dag zullen we de Martinitoren beklimmen en hier genieten van een mooi uitzicht over Groningen. In de middag volgen we een cocktail workshop, waar we verschillende cocktails zullen bouwen, shaken en stirren. Natuurlijk is er ook de mogelijkheid deze workshop bij te wonen met alcohol-vrije cocktails. De rest van de dag ben je vrij om de rest van de stad te verkennen. We hebben wat geruchten gehoord over een nieuw hondencafé in Groningen, wanneer deze geruchten inderdaad waar zijn zullen we wellicht op zondagochtend een bezoekje brengen voor koffie/thee en het knuffelen van schattige puppies. Deze city trip kost je 35 euro, hiervoor krijg je het verblijf in het hostel, het beklimmen van de Martinitoren en de complete cocktail workshop. Let op, je moet dus wel zelf zorgen voor vervoer, ook andere drankjes en eten zijn niet inbegrepen. Ga je gezellig met ATHENA mee naar Groningen? Buiten de organisatoren zijn er nog 34 plekken over. Machine Learning is nog niet bij iedereen bekend, maar toch komen we het vaker tegen dan we denken. Gebruik je Google Maps? Google Translate? Zie je (Facebook) advertenties? Krijg je GEEN spam meer binnen? Dan helpt Machine Learning je al om het dagelijkse leven wat makkelijker te maken. Om van Machine Learning technieken gebruik te kunnen maken, is het belangrijk om voldoende (=zo veel mogelijk) data te hebben. Als bank hebben we die data. Met de verbetering van hardware en software de afgelopen jaren, is het voor iedereen mogelijk om er gebruik van te kunnen maken. Mits je natuurlijk weet waar je mee bezig bent. Het begrijpen van de mogelijke toepassingen van Machine Learning, is waar het Technologie Centrum van de Volksbank zich mee bezig houdt. Het Technologie Centrum is een afdeling waar vanuit de techniek gekeken wordt naar mogelijke toepassingen van nieuwe (veel belovende) technieken. Met het doel om het dagelijks leven (/bankieren) voor klanten makkelijker, sneller en veiliger te maken. Wie zijn we? De Volksbank N.V. gaat met de merken ASN Bank, BLG Wonen, RegioBank en SNS de uitdaging aan om de menselijke maat in bankieren terug te brengen.

In de workshop ‘Effectief borrelen’ staan we stil wat jij uit je borrel wilt halen en kom je in beweging dit zelf te bereiken.

Practical Route Planning Algorithms for Logistics Many applications in logistics require that “vehicle routing problems” are solved. Planning how a fleet of trucks should be used to deliver an amount of orders at low fuel cost and also fast would be a typical example. A central part of such a planning is to compute the travel costs between the involved addresses. Doing that efficiently is an interesting problem itself. The talk discusses some pretty advanced and clever algorithms from that area. The discussed algorithms are not only interesting results of academic research. They are actually used by the industry to solve real problems for real customers, helping to deliver real goods. Have fun.

Op zaterdag 3 februari arriveert er een groep internationale Erasmusstudenten op de TU/e campus om een geweldige intro-dag te beleven! Deze internationale studenten zullen hier voor minimaal een half jaar komen studeren, maar ze weten nog helemaal niks over Nederland en over onze universiteit. Om deze studenten een vliegende start te geven en ze te helpen zich thuis te voelen hier, wordt deze intro-dag georganiseerd. Iedere internationale student die deelneemt wordt gekoppeld aan een student van hier, een buddy! En daarvoor zoeken we jou! Je zult van tevoren al in contact komen met jou internationale student, ze kunnen je dan al vragen stellen over de universiteit of over Nederland en onze cultuur. Op 3 februari zul je je buddy dan in het echt ontmoeten en neem je ze mee naar alle activiteiten gedurende deze intro-dag. Buddy worden is geheel gratis en we gaan die dag leuke activiteiten doen! GEWIS is weer uitgenodigd om mee te doen aan de televisieshow Weet ik Veel, die op RTL 4 zal worden uitgezonden. Vorig jaar won Femke van der Schoot deze show, en dit jaar zou het natuurlijk heel tof zijn als GEWIS weer de winnaar kan leveren.

In dit programma strijden studenten tegen elkaar door middel van het beantwoorden van 50 vragen. De student met de hoogste score mag naar de finale om samen met de beste van de 3 BN'ers een prijs bij elkaar te spelen.

Heb jij zin om je te meten met andere studenten uit Nederland en een kans te maken om samen met een bekende Nederlander een flinke geldprijs te winnen, schrijf je dan in!

Dear everyone,The Supremum committee is looking for GEWIS-members (or committees) who feel like writing an article for upcoming edition (50.1). The theme of next edition will be "50 shades of Supremum". In this edition we will take a look at the changes the Supremum has made over the past 50 years. You can choose to write something related to the theme (recommended), or write an article about another, interesting theme. You can either write an one page article (around 500 words with a maximum of 550) or a two page article (around 1250 words, with a maximum of 1300). If you are really ambitious, you can write an even bigger article (2+ pages). Just contact one member of the Supremum committee for more information on bigger articles.

Another option you can make, is whether you want a regular or a features article. The send-in deadline for features articles (21/01/2018) is two weeks earlier than the deadline for the regular articles (04/02/2018). However, a featured article will get a more detailed design as our design team has more time to work on those articles.

If you, or your committee, want to write an article, please subscribe to this activity (or mail to supremum@gewis.nl). After the reply deadline on 07/01/2018, our mailing team will send out a document with more information about writing an article.

Complexe ICT -projecten tot een succes maken met portfolio management. Of je cybersecurityskills inzetten voor een veiliger Nederland. Dit zijn voorbeelden van het werk dat je als Rijks ICT-trainee kunt gaan doen. Op donderdag 21 december komen trainees Tessa (MSc. Innovation Sciences) en Nout (BSc. Artifical Intelligence, MSc. Information Sciences) vertellen over hun leven als ICT trainee bij de Rijksoverheid. Nout houdt zich bezig met HR analytics. Hij vertelt hoe hij grote hoeveelheden data structureert om ontwikkelingen, oorzaken en gevolgen op HR gebied (ziekteverzuim, werkstress, etc.) te kunnen signaleren. Tessa neemt je mee in de wereld van data gestuurd toezicht en hoe ze teams helpt om data in hun dagelijkse werkzaamheden in te zetten en welke kansen dit biedt. Daarnaast vertellen Tessa en Nout wat het leven als trainee nog meer inhoudt naast de drie verschillende projecten die zij in twee jaar tijd zullen uitvoeren. Met trots kunnen wij het heugdelijke feit aankondigen dat ook dit jaar Hét Dispuut In Vino Veritas een Decadent Weekend zal organiseren. In het weekend van acht, negen en tien december zullen wij even het drukke leven achter ons laten en ons laten meeslepen in decadente sferen. Op vrijdag als de colleges verleden tijd zijn zullen wij ons begeven naar een heus kasteel waar wij, na een avondmaal genuttigd te hebben, zullen genieten van de allerbeste wijnen.Met het overvloeien van de vrijdag in de zaterdag zal een monumentale dag zijn intrede doen. Wij zullen dan vieren dat exact veertien jaar geleden de heren Beckers, Ceelen, Verheijen en Zwerts bij elkaar kwamen om de samen Hét Dispuut In Vino Veritas op te richten. The Statistics Behind Experimentation at Booking.com

by Raphael Lopez Kaufman At Booking.com we have been using online controlled experiments, also called A/B tests, for more than ten years to conduct evidence based product development. Overall, on a daily basis, all members of our departments run and analyse more than a thousand concurrent experiments to quickly validate new ideas. These experiments run across all our products, from mobile apps and tools used by hoteliers to customer service phone lines and internal systems. In this talk, I will try to motivate why online giants such as Google, Facebook, Amazon or Booking.com run online controlled experiments and why we need statistics to analyse experiment results. After having described the theoretical framework which underpins online experimentation, the Neymar-Rubin causal model, I will go into more details about how this framework is used at Booking.com, with concrete examples. Finally, I will describe the common pitfalls we need to guard against to make sure product teams are not chasing statistical ghosts, and I will conclude with some of the statistical challenges we are facing to enable faster and more reliable experimentation across the board. Om er zeker van te zijn dat de Sint niet teveel hoeft te dragen op zijn oude dag kun je je hier inschijven GRATIS. Omdat sommige hun schoen niet kunnen missen is het mogelijk om er eentje te maken met de link hier onder, maar zorg er natuurlijk voor dat hij dan mooi versiert is anders stel je Sinterklaas misschien wel teleur. To give you a flavor of the sort of work mathematicians and information engineers do at Rijkswaterstaat, we will present you with a few recent examples. Daniel van der Maas (Bachelor in Physics and Mathematics and Mastered in Mathematical Physics) works at Rijkswaterstaat as a Data Scientist since January 2017. He will outline the approach he devised for automatic geographical map generation from aerial and satellite pictures, using deep learning methodologies. He will briefly introduce the techniques involved and will pay special attention to the way he got involved in the project and why a mathematical background proved to be extremely useful. Quirine de Kloet also started in January 2017 at Rijkswaterstaat to extend our Applied Data Science capabilities. She graduated as a Bachelor in Applied Mathematics followed by a Master in Applied Mathematics, specializing in Mathematical Physics. Before joining us as an employee, Quirine completed her Master Thesis at Rijkswaterstaat, titled ‘Modeling of Traffic on Fairways (Optimizing the Allocation of Traffic) on which she will elaborate today: although a lot of research has been conducted on road traffic and multiple models have been invented and applied, the topic of traffic on fairways has been largely neglected. The research goal for the graduation project was therefor to define a model that can simulate traffic on fairways, using it to optimize traffic allocation.

Zaterdag: we zetten onze wedstrijd voort richting Kopenhagen. Aankomst in Kopenhagen zal rond etenstijd zijn, waar het eerst arriverende koppel de GELIFT wisseltrofee in ontvangst mag nemen. In de avond maken we de stad onveilig, en uiteindelijk is er ook een overnachting in een jeugdherberg.

Zondag: heb je de hele dag om Kopenhagen te ontdekken. De commissie zal zorgen voor wat leuke suggesties, maar het is ook prima als je op eigen houtje de stad in wilt. Halverwege de avond nemen we het vliegtuig terug naar Eindhoven, zodat we diezelfde avond nog terug zijn in Eindhoven.

The history and future of software testing

What comes to your mind if you think about ‘testing’ as a profession? Fun? Boring? Exciting? Well, to be honest, many people think it’s pretty boring, very monotonous and an annoying task to do. They definitely don’t see themselves as future bug-hunters. That’s a pity as testing is actually big fun!

In this presentation, you will learn what testing is, why it’s so much fun and why it will even be more so in the future. You will be taken through a brief history of this profession, starting at the moment the first bug was found and taking you to where it is today – a time where testers are working in multidisciplinary teams and where testing is highly automated and technical. It doesn't stop there. You will also be taken to the near future, where testing is done using bots, machine learning and artificial intelligence. And we will show you how we already apply these technologies today in our work.

About the speakerBart Vrenegoor began his career as a software tester 13 years ago. He currently works as a test manager for Cognizant Technology Solutions, helping clients like ING, de Volksbank and DLL to solve their challenges with testing in large international projects. Bart is also a public speaker, author and coach.

Deep Learning & AI: What's behind the hype curtain Self-driving cars, Siri, Cancer sniffers, Shark & seacow monitoring, fraud detection, recognizing people .. deep learning seems to be doing everything the past five years. Being an old and relatively simple mathematical technique in origin, we will explain what deep learning is and how it works, what its limitations are, where it is going, why you might care, and how you can start at home. We'll also set aside some time to discuss AI-taking-over-the-world scenarios, figure out how fast we'll all be losing our jobs. Note: Lunch will be distributed directly after the lecture!

Donald Knuth is a smart man with ideas. If smart people have ideas, they write books about it. But Donald was fed up with the available text processing software for writing books, so he wrote his own. This became LaTeX.

Nowadays, LaTeX is the de facto standard in scientific text processing. It has built-in support for all sorts of mathematical characters, it can be used for lots of things, like homework, presentations and resumes and it makes your life a lot easier. As a mathematician you will first use LaTeX in Q1 during the Linear Algebra 1 course, as a computer scientist, you will use it during Data Structures in Q3.

Because LaTeX is an invaluable skill when you are studying Mathematics or Computer Science, TRAIN is offering a LaTeX-training! We have asked Bor de Kock, who is famous for making LaTeX fun, to give you this training, we will provide some snacks and drinks and there will be an eating list so you can fill your stomach before diving into the world of scientific test processing.

On Wednesday the 4th of October Study Association GEWIS will convene the 159th General Meeting. All of her members are invited to attend this meeting as the Code of Conduct article 4 demands. Up until 4 days prior to the meeting, members can suggest items to be discussed in this meeting. The agenda, minutes and other documents will be posted on the website.

If you are an English speaking member and want to attend this meeting, please notify us in time. The GM is usually in Dutch but might be held in English if someone demands that.

Op 2 oktober zal het onderwijsdebat plaatsvinden: een debat met studenten en medewerkers van de faculteit Wiskunde & Informatica die een vriendschappelijk debat houden over het onderwijs. GEWIS is invited to come to the studio of "De wereld draait door" on 19 September. Unfortunately only 15 people can join.

For those who do not know DWDD, De Wereld Draait Door is a Dutch talkshow hosted by Matthijs van Nieuwkerk. The program is broadcasted live every evening, with guests form politics, science, sports, culture and media. The entire show is Dutch, therefore it might not be interesting for people who do not understand Dutch, however you are welcome to join.

In het weekend van 15-17 september wordt weer het eerste GEWIS-weekend georganiseerd: de enige echte FLUP! Het is een reis om de wereld, maar dan in drie dagen!

In university you learn about building software systems from scratch. But what is not teached during class, is how to deal with legacy software. And the chance that you will have to work with legacy software is a lot higher than writing new software. Op zaterdag 2 september 2017 arriveert er een groep internationale Erasmusstudenten op de TU/e campus om een geweldige intro-dag te beleven! Deze internationale studenten zullen hier voor minimaal een half jaar komen studeren, maar ze weten nog helemaal niks over Nederland en over onze universiteit. Om deze studenten een vliegende start te geven en ze te helpen zich thuis te voelen hier, wordt deze intro-dag georganiseerd. Iedere internationale student die deelneemt wordt gekoppeld aan een student van hier, een buddy! En daarvoor zoeken we jou! Je zult van tevoren al in contact komen met jou internationale student, ze kunnen je dan al vragen stellen over de universiteit of over Nederland en onze cultuur. Op 2 september zul je je buddy dan in het echt ontmoeten en neem je ze mee naar alle activiteiten gedurende deze intro-dag. Buddy worden is geheel gratis en we gaan die dag leuke activiteiten doen! Hallo mede GEWIS'ers,

We willen een nieuwe commissie oprichten die een toffe wintersportreis gaat organiseren. Nu willen we graag weten hoeveel mensen geïnteresseerd zijn om mee te gaan skiën of snowboarden volgende winter (2017/2018). Dus als het je zin hebt om mee te gaan, laat het hieronder weten! Het maakt niet uit of je al ervaring hebt.

Let op: we vragen ook naar het aantal dagen dat jullie graag willen gaan. Dit hangt natuurlijk af van de prijs. De prijzen zijn een grove schatting. Het aantal dagen gaat over het aantal skidagen. De werkelijke reis duurt dus waarschijnlijk 2 dagen langer (heen- en terugreis). En: dit gaat over kosten van: vervoer, verblijf, skipas, materiaal. Kosten voor eten en eventuele ski/snowboardles zijn dus exclusief.

On the first of July a new board will be welcomed. To celebrate this GEWIS will organise an inauguration drink for the 36th board. This day takes a lot of effort to organise and the board needs all the help they can get. During the day, the GEWIS room needs to be stripped completely, food needs to be prepared and a room in the bunker needs to be cleaned. During the event, we will need many people to stay guard and protect the objects and board of GEWIS. After the inauguration drink, we will need a few people to drive the new board to home.All in all, an amazing event and we need all the help we can get.
