As everyone probably already has heard, the intro will be very different next year. Sadly, also the FLUP cannot be organised as it was previous years. As the intro committee, we still want to organise some other activity that will fulfil the goals of the FLUP, but also conforms to the corona regulations. We already have some plans of our own, but together we know much more, so we need YOU (insert uncle Sam meme) to help us come up with the best ideas. For this purpose, we are organizing a brainstorm session on 23rd of June from 12:35 until 13:25, the first Tuesday of the exam period. The session will probably be held on the GEWIScord server in one of the meeting spaces voice channels. If too many people will join the brainstorm, the location might switch to Teams. Banners, you love them, we love them, they love them and ESPECIALLY the board loves them! That is why the board asked every committee to design a banner and send it in to the board. Of course, we have received a lot of beautiful creations and winner needs to be picked. This competition will take place this Friday at 6 p.m. At first the board will present all banners. After this the board will have a small discussion amongst themselves to determine the winner of the amazing prize! This absolutely fabulous price will of course be a BANNER! We zijn terug! Deze donderdag zal de eerste borrel in de coronatijd plaatsvinden. Dit is een proefborrel om te kijken of activiteiten goed verlopen met de anderhalve meter regels. Maar dat houdt ons niet tegen, wij gaan met zijn allen genieten. Tijdens deze borrel zal je op een gele picknick bank zitten met zijn 4en en kom je hier niet van af, behalve als je moet plassen. De BAC zal heerlijke biertjes komen brengen. Meer uitleg over de protocollen volgt nog.

Je kan je inschrijven per persoon of met een groepje van maximaal 4. Als er meer dan 24 mensen op de inschrijflijst staan voor de deadline, zal er worden geloot. Een groepje heeft dan even veel kans om ingeloot te worden als een losse deelnemer. Maar dan kan je wel je vrienden weer zien die je al drie maanden alleen via de webcam hebt gezien. Let op: Je groepje telt maar één keer mee in de loting, je kan ook maar met één groepje of inschrijving meedoen.

Hi all,

We hope you are doing well in these strange times. Luckily, we from GEPWNAGE are well-equipped to lock ourselves in and amuse ourselves with all the luxuries the world wide web has to offer. We are proud to see that all other fraternities have paid attention to our lessons in how to set up a nerdy activity. The digital activities all the parties from GEWIS have organized have helped everybody escape the social confinement brought on to us by the virus. We have enjoyed watching keuken met I.V.V on Twitch, joining the quiz from GELIMBO, drinking the cocktails from B.O.O.M, the escape room from ATHENA, and the Daily Defi Dare from Défi.

While these activities made the quarantine exciting and fun, it is time to set the first 1.5 meter steps to the outside world. Sitting inside is the last thing we want for the rest of this year. It just so happens to be that the board agrees, and we are proud to announce that we have permission to organize the first offline activity (sort of) in a long time. It is time to dance of joy and show your best moves on some funky beats and join us at the JUST DANCE COMPO 2020! Show us that your moves are the best moves and beat your dancing rivals to take home the most AWESOME price there is: the honor of saying you beat 29 other GEWIS'ers this year in the most regulated tournament of GEWIS ever.

Tuesday Picnic joins us for a joint Lecture from their CTO Daniel Gebler and Joris van Tatenhove. Do you also miss GEWIS and your GEWIS friend(s) during the quarantine time? We as the committee Stijl did so, therefore we came up with the initiative that you can send a GEWIS postcard to your friends. The subscription for the cards opens at the GEWIS website at Friday the 5th of June 2020 at 12.00h. There are 120 cards available (max. 2 per participant), so make sure that if you want to have the possibility to send a card, you subscribe within 4 hours after opening (so before 16.00h). If there are more then 120 subscribers, there will be a draw and the first 120 participants will be able to send 1 postcard. If there are less then 120 subscribers but the total amount of requested postcards is higher than 120, then there will be a draw for the second card. After the closing of the subscription list and when you are within the 120 participants that can send a postcard, you will receive an email with the Google Forms link. Are you are an adventurous student who likes the spirit of nature and is not afraid to be active for some part of the weekend, or a student who loves to drink beer while sitting at a campfire all night? If you can answer this question with "yes", don't hesitate and join us next year!

Each year we spend this weekend on a campsite. We organise some great activities for you, we make sure there is a river to "stream" in (ask B.O.O.M. members for details) and a campfire to sit at when it's dark and cold. Examples of activities of previous years are mountain biking, spelunking and canoeing. Since we are on a campsite, we will sleep in cozy tents.

This year, we will visit the Eifel in Germany. The weekend will take place from 5th till 7th of June 2020. If you want to join please subscribe below. If you have a car that can take people to Germany please let us know in the form as well. We would also like to know if you have a tent and how many people could fit in it. We will not make tent groups but this might give other people some help in asking around to find a place to sleep :)

On the 3rd of June the online committee market will be held during the lunchbreak. The committees of GEWIS will be present in the GEWIS discord to inform you about their committee, the way they work, their goals etc. Every committee will have their own voice and text channel where you can ask them questions or maybe get to know some members in a more informal way.

So from 12:30 until 13:30 you can drop by in the GEWIScord to ask any questions you might have to the committees you are interested in. If you do not know what committees there are or if you do not know if you are interested in joining one, you can also just drop by to observe, there are no strings attached!

Those are questions you might have during this quarantine. You might have other questions regarding food. TRAIN wants to help you get those questions answered. Yvonne de Kinkelder, the food coach of the SSC is making a podcast about all kinds of food related topics during quarantine. She can help you answer your questions, but she needs to know which question you might have! TRAIN will send all your questions to her and they might get answered. Dear GEWIS member,

Due to the Corona crisis, the yearly ATHENA/B.O.O.M./BAC cocktail buitenborrel with burgers can not take place this year, which is of course very sad. Therefore, B.O.O.M. and ATHENA have been thinking about some alternatives for you (and for ourselves of course). We came up with the amazing idea to cook burgers and make cocktails at home, and we call it ‘Burgers bakken en cocktails hakken!’. Thursday the 28th of May, the one and only Tom ‘Cocktail Guy’ Slenders will teach you how to make three different cocktails. You can follow the livestream at twitch.tv/cocktailslive, which starts at 19.30h. During this livestream there will be some breaks, during which you can drink your cocktail on the GEWIS discord. We made you a shopping list, which you can find here: ShoppingList.pdf. In this list you can also find the tools you’ll need for making the cocktails, and some ideas for substitutes if you don’t have these tools at home.

There is more! From this moment onward, you can join the B.O.O.M. Burger Battle. Make a small video, a photo collage, or whatever you like, of yourself creating the most delicious burger. On Tuesday 26th of May, a new creature will appear at GEWIScord. Is it human? Is it software? No, it is an Intro20 bot. The Intro20 bot will lead you, in teams of four, through all challenges and in the end, you will find the treasure.

Thus grab your beer, take a urination break, and prepare for a series of challenges that will lead you to the Intro Theme of 2020. Dear GEWIS member, our evenings have been a lot less exciting now that we’re all in quarantine. After cleaning our rooms for the third time in two weeks we’ve been trying to learn new skills now that we are all at home, but we have also found the time to reminisce of our previous hobbies.

You too have probably started doing a lot of things you did in the past, like practicing old skills, reading old books or playing old computer games. Have you too forgotten all the awesome games you used to play? Then we’ve got the activity for you.

For GESeiK’s second ever activity we are organizing an online spele.nl tournament! We have selected the most nostalgic and fun games that you probably played way back when. During the last week of May you’ll get the chance to compete with other teams (of maximum 4 people) for who is best at these games and you might even win yourself a special prize!

Het uiterst succesvolle "Keuken met I.V.V" komt terug voor een tweede ronde! Als u de eerste variant heeft gemist, zijn een aantal van de beste momenten nu her te beleven op Youtube.

Komende vrijdag rond klokslag 5 in de namiddag, zal er op twitch.tv/hetdispuut wederom live een culinair mirakel plaatsvinden. Ditmaal zal het menu zijn opgemaakt uit zelfgemaakte pasta met een aantal voortreffelijke, zelfs als student gemakkelijk te bereiden opties voor pastasaus! We beginnen om 5 uur met het bereiden van de verse pasta, welke u natuurlijk gerust allen mee kunt doen, waarna het programma om 17:45 uur verder zal gaan met de eerste sauzen. Koop dus gerust verse pasta in de supermarkt, als u niet over de benodigde apparatuur beschikt om pasta te draaien. De pasta kan ook zonder deze apparatuur gemaakt worden, maar dit zal niet op de livestream worden gedemonstreerd. Het streven is om alle pastasauzen om 19:30 klaar te hebben.

Onder het motto "Niets is wat het lijkt" gaan 12 kandidaten een weekend lang opdrachten doen om geld te verdienen voor de pot. 1 kandidaat zal echter zijn uiterste best doen om dit te voorkomen. Deze mol zal proberen ongezien de opdrachten saboteren en aan de andere kandidaten is het de taak om hem te ontmaskeren.

Ben jij fan van Wie is de Mol en heb je altijd al eens mee willen doen? Heb jij stalen zenuwen, denk jij de mol te kunnen ontmaskeren in een achtbaan van emoties, leugens en vals spel?

Schrijf je dan in voor het GEMOLD20 weekend van 20 mei tot uiterlijk 24 mei (afhankelijk van je eigen prestaties). Er is plaats voor 12 kandidaten (waarvan 1 mol) en een aantal assistenten die ons tijdens het weekend kunnen helpen met koken/ filmen en mogelijk als chauffeur. In het geval van teveel inschrijvingen zal een lotingsprocedure plaatsvinden. De optie kandidaat en anders assistent kan je kiezen als je mee wilt als kandidaat, maar in het geval van uitloten ook nog in de selectie wil van assistenten.

Sinds de wisselALV waar dit idee voor het eerst gepresenteerd werd is er veel interesse getoond in deze unieke "limited edition" GEWIS mondkapjes. 100 mensen hadden interesse in ongeveer 200 stuks.

De meeste feedback kwam op het design, wat initieel in 5 minuten tijd gebeund was door een W'er, gelukkig stond er echter binnen korte tijd een designteam klaar, gevormd door Samuel Oosterholt, Levi Prikken, Marlene van Laar en Illona Hoenderop. Dankzij deze helden met hun topideeen kunnen we nu een prachtig ontwerp presenteren.

Ondertussen zijn we ook gewisseld van leverancier, zodat we meer comfort en een mooier ontwerp kunnen bieden. Met de binnenlaag van 100% katoen zijn deze hippe accessoires zelfs geschikt voor treinreizen naar Enschede.

This will be the Wissel-ALV (Election GMM) in which the thirty ninth board will be elected. There will be a vote about storing the profits of the NWERC into a reserve at GEWIS. A group of people to evaluate the Multi Annual Strategic Vision of GEWIS must be formed, so there will also be a vote on that. Furthermore, the candidate board will present a draft of their board policy and there will be voted on the continuation of the fraternities.

De Landelijke Interuniversitaire Mathematische Olympiade is een jaarlijks terugkerende wedstrijd waarin teams tot 4 studenten vanuit Nederlandse of Vlaamse universiteiten drie uur lang de tijd krijgen om een aantal wiskundeopgaven op te lossen. De opgaven zijn bedoeld voor studenten van alle jaren die hun wiskundig inzicht op de proef willen stellen.

Vanwege de huidige maatregelen kan de fysieke LIMO dit jaar helaas niet doorgaan. Maar om ook in deze tijden leuke activiteiten te blijven houden, organiseren we dit jaar een online editie! Deze editie zal nog steeds op vrijdag 8 mei plaatsvinden. Je zult die dag van 13:00 tot 16:00 de tijd krijgen om met je team te werken aan een aantal leuke en uitdagende opgaven.

Beste Batavieren,

Ook dit jaar gaat GEWIS weer meedoen aan de Batavierenrace. Dit jaar zal de hardloopestafette van Nijmegen naar Enschede plaatsvinden in het weekend van 1,2 en 3 mei 2020. Als het je leuk lijkt mee te doen, schrijf je dan vooral in aangezien we maar 25 plekken hebben!

Wat houdt de Batavierenrace in? Op vrijdagavond ga je richting Enschede, waar je jouw tentje al op kan zetten en vervolgens een biertje kan drinken. Alle deelnemers zullen naar eigen voorkeur worden ingedeeld in de nacht-, ochtend- of middagploeg. De eerste etappe (van de nachtploeg) begint vrijdagnacht om 23:00 in het centrum van Nijmegen en de estafette eindigt zaterdagmiddag rond 17:00 op de campus van Enschede. Na de estafette zal er zaterdagavond een feest zijn, namelijk het grootste studentfeest van Europa! Op zondag zullen we weer rustig aan terug gaan richting Eindhoven. Beste Batavieren,

Zoals ondertussen wel duidelijk is geworden, gaat de gewone Batavierenrace niet door. Maar nu is er toch een alternatief opgezet: de 1ste Online Batavierenrace! Graag willen wij daaraan meedoen met ons eigen GEWIS team. Het werkt als volgt: we moeten met zijn allen 125 km hardlopen. Dit houdt in dat de organiserende commissie van ons 25 screenshots verwacht met daarop de afgelegde afstand en gelopen tijd van de loper.

Dus nu is ons plan als volgt: iedereen loopt rond zijn of haar quarantaineplaats ongeveer 5 kilometer hard. Registreer je loop via bijvoorbeeld je Strava-app en maak een screenshot van jouw scherm waarop de route, de afstand, de tijd en jouw naam staat. Let op! Het hardlooprondje van 5 km moet wel gelopen worden tussen vrijdag 1 mei om 00:48 uur en zaterdag 2 mei om 23:59 uur, anders telt jouw inzending niet mee. Stuur deze screenshot door via de mail aan bata@gewis.nl en doe zo mee met de online Batavierenrace!

Omdat we elkaar niet kunnen aanmoedigen en er dus niemand is om foto's te maken, is het leuk wanneer er zelf selfies gemaakt kunnen worden bij je start en finish van je loop om zo toch een mooie sfeerimpressie te krijgen. Na afloop is een gepaste afsluiting natuurlijk wel benodigd, dus starten wij zaterdagavond een online borrel (Schulties niet inbegrepen) om toch het feestje er een beetje in te houden. Leuk idee? Iedereen kan meedoen dus schrijf je snel in, zodat wij zeker weten dat we voldoende deelnemers hebben.

Voor iedereens veiligheid is het belangrijk om tijdens het hardlopen 1,5 meter afstand te houden van anderen en alleen te lopen. Zo kunnen we samen een mooie editie van de online Batavierenrace maken.

And since we’re going to be stuck in this situation until at least the end of this semester; we’re organizing a workshop about motivation. Where in this case “we” is the FYC TRAIN workgroup, that contains of four members of different FYCs and two members of TRAIN.During the training you will learn about motivation, what it is and the pitfalls of it. You will also learn about setting goals and distractions. An important part of the training is setting up a buddy systems. This way you can talk with other people about staying motivated and those people can support you. The training will be given in two sessions, the first session will be held April 29 from 19:30-21:00, and the second session will take place at the May 7, at the same time. The two sessions can’t be attended separately, so please make sure that, if you subscribe, you’re available both these dates. The training will take place in Zoom.Since a part of the training takes place within groups, and some people might prefer doing this with people they know well, there is an opportunity to subscribe with a group (please fill in the same group name). A group should consist of 5 people. If you don’t have a preference, then you can of course fill in “I don’t have a group’” and we will make sure that you are added to a group.The training will be given by Jan Reinder Rosing who works for Project Wijsheid. The session will be hosted by Rob Douwes, Lead Business Architect and Tu/e Alumni. He states that the financial industry is modernizing rapidly into a virtual presence where the current distribution models are no longer valid. He leads the bright-minded team of business architects and IT-architects / engineers to develop the next gen architecture for the online presence and CRM functions of Rabobank. He also guides the implementation of IT-systems for the future and sun setting legacy along with designing migrations strategies for open banking in the near future. Managing this process in an efficient and effective way is his everyday challenge and even more amidst Covid-19.

Note that the format will be a bit different than usual, to gain interaction with you from home the lecture will consist for a large part of a Q&A. Arrrr! Het GEZWEM zeilweekend komt er weer aan!Dit jaar omdat GEZWEM haar 20e verjaardag viert zullen we groots uitpakken met ons 4e lustRUM weekend. We zullen dit jaar met zijn alle gaan zeilen op De Vrijheid een grote driemaster. Met dit prachtige schip gaan we een mooie tocht maken over het IJsselmeer. Exacte route en daarmee bezienswaardigheden hangen sterk af van het weer, dus dat kunnen wij pas later bekendmaken.

Als jij zin hebt in een weekend zeilen op een prachtig schip gecombineerd met het nuttigen van de nodige hoeveelheden bier en rum, schrijf je dan nu in voor het GEZWEM lustRUM weekend!

Het is dit jaar ook mogelijk om op zaterdag een dag mee te zeilen mocht je niet heel het weekend kunnen of willen.

We zullen vertrekken vanuit de haven van Enkhuizen, dit is goed bereikbaar met het OV.

Let op: de capaciteit voor het 'Heel Weekend' pakket ligt op een maximum van 34 personen, en de capaciteit voor het 'Alleen Zaterdag' pakket ligt op een maximum van 12 personen.Op deze inschrijflijst vindt een loting plaats onder de deelnemers die zich binnen een uur na opening hebben ingeschreven, en de maximale capaciteit overschreden is. Het zijn barre tijden en nare omstandigheden om het leven in mee te mogen maken gedurende deze nu al veel te lang durende crisis door het coronavirus dat vermoedelijk is veroorzaakt door het oraal consumeren van een van de enige gevleugelde zoogdieren op aard genaamd Chiroptera, ofwel in de volksmond Vleermuis, die vermoedelijk drager was van het eerder aangehaalde virus. De ziekte verspreidt zich tussen de mensen middels lichaamssappen uit de mond en neus, en daarom zijn er richtlijnen die ons tot treffen weerhouden. Dit zorgt er voor dat men tegenwoordig in isolement leeft, en daardoor de aanspraak van men om zich heen tot een minimum houdt en minder uit zijn of haar vertrouwede omgeving komt. Je zou er waanzinnig van worden!

Maar wees niet getreurd! Hèt Dispuut komt met een oplossing voor allen die thuis zit zonder enige vorm van amusement in de late uurtjes van de ordinair normale en saaie werkdag. Dispuut ``In Vino Veritas’’ wil ook graag een bijdrage leven aan de continuïteit van sociale evenement zowel als het amuseren van (onder meer) de leden van onze prachtige studievereniging. Het is namelijk zo dat dankzij Hèt Dispuut in normale omstandigheden er met regelmaat door middel van het organiseren van exquisiete activiteiten genoten kan worden door alle GEWIS-leden van de decadentie die wij uzelf en uiteraard ook onszelf op ieder moment toewensen. Gezien deze activiteiten normaliter het treffen van onze naasten inhoudt, hebben ook wij niet stil gezeten en hebben een oplossing bedacht om deze decadentie niet alleen naar onze residenties, maar ook in die van alle anderen die regelmatig aanwezig zijn op onze activiteiten, over te brengen.

Een verantwoord kleine groep enthousiaste leden van Hèt Dispuut zal op de avond van dinsdag 21 april twee gerechten bereiden. De bereiding van deze gerechten zal via een digitaal medium (Twitch) te volgen zijn door ieder die aan wilt sluiten bij deze show die ongetwijfeld zal uitpuilen van excellentie. Ruim voor deze uitzending zullen er twee boodschappenlijstjes op het web geplaatst worden, de een voor een beginnersgerecht, en de ander voor een gerecht waar u ongetwijfeld uw ouders met een uitgebreid kerstdiner positief zult verassen, mits de bereiding natuurlijk correct zal worden geëxecuteerd. Op deze manier kan een ieder die ons digitaal vergezeld de decadentie die wij voor onze eigen consumeren aan het produceren zijn nabootsen om zo dezelfde decadentie in eigen residentie te laten plaatsvinden. Het zal ongetwijfeld een knalsessie worden.

Dit jaar zal het GEDWAAL (winter-)wandelweekend weer plaatsvinden op 28 en 29 maart. We vertrekken zaterdag de 28e naar de Maasduinen, waar we ongeveer 25 kilometer gaan wandelen. Onderweg zal er een lunch klaar staan. Aan het eind van de middag komen we aan bij een blokhut waar we lekker winters zullen gaan eten. ’s Avonds zullen we ons onder het genot van een drankje vermaken met spelletjes. Op zondag gaan we naar de Hertog Jan brouwerij en krijgen we daar een rondleiding. Daarna reizen we weer terug naar Eindhoven.

Dit weekend kost 25 euro. Er is ook een optie om niet mee te gaan naar de brouwerij, in dat geval hoef je maar 15 euro te betalen.

On Tuesday the 24th of March the AC will take you to Jump XL, a trampoline jumping park in Eindhoven. Here you can play ultimate dodgeball with and against eACh other, but you are also able to explore many other areas where you can prACtice your jumping skills. Afterwards there will be a borrel at Jump XL where you will get some drinks and snACks. Since Jump XL is loCAted in Eindhoven, there will be a bike group that will leave around 18:00 from GEWIS.

Attention! There will be a maximum of 41 people that can join this ACtivity and the subscription list will open at 13:00 on the 2nd of March. If it is the CAse that there are more subscriptions within the first hour than there are spots available, there will be a draw for all spots with all subscribers within the first hour having an equal chance of obtaining such a spot. Het coronavirus grijpt om zich heen in alle hoeken en gaten van de wereld en heel Nederland zit thuis. Sport is afgelast, colleges gaan niet meer door en ook ons geliefde dakterras is gesloten om een pintje te doen na een zware dag.

In deze tijden is het belangrijk om jezelf toch bezig te houden. Je kunt zo makkelijk beginnen aan dingen waar je eigenlijk nooit aan toekomt, zoals je BEP afmaken, dat ene vak halen en de nieuwe Animal Crossing. Echter mis je soms dat beetje competitie wat je normaal gesproken wel op het sportveld hebt.

Daarom is er op maandagavond een pubquiz! Via de magie van het internet kan men in het comfort van zijn of haar eigen woonkameraan deze pubquiz corona-vrij meedoen! Maak een team van 2-6 mensen, skype/discord elkaar(het is niet de bedoeling dat men samen gaat zitten voor deze quiz), trek een pint open en strijd voor de eeuwige roem.

Voor GEWIS leden voor wie de eeuwige roem niet goed genoeg is zijn er extra redenenen om mee te doen: De winnaar wint een borrelkaart van 10 euro, waardoor dus het eerste rondje bij de eerstvolgende borrel gratisch is!

Dat betekent, de wedstrijden van de poulefase zul je zelf moeten plannen. Zorg dat je voor 23 maart al je wedstrijden van de poulefase hebt gespeeld, want dan is de finaleavond!

Dear GEWIS'ers,

After a city trip to Brugge in 2017 and Groningen in 2018, ATHENA is organizing a city trip to **Gent **in 2020! We will be visiting Gent from Friday the 13th to Sunday the 15th of March. We have arranged a place to sleep for two nights, and a fun activity. The rest of the weekend you are free to do whatever you like: drink some nice Belgian beers, do a canal cruise, visit the Gravensteen (castle), walk a geocache through Gent, etc. The costs (including hotel/hostel and the activity, excluding everything else) will be 50 euros. We hebben afgelopen week mogen genieten van carnaval, een alom bekende festiviteit oorspronkelijk uit de zuidelijke sferen van ons prachtige land. Om aan dit ultieme stukje cultuurproeverij toe te voegen, organiseert Hèt Dispuut "In Vino Veritas" de "Oud-Hollandsche Borrel", waar u allen kunt genieten van de meer traditionele Hollandsche dranken en versnaperingen. Deze festiviteit vol Nederlandse traditie en gezelligheid zal plaatsvinden in de gebruikelijke GEWIS-ruimte "Het Dakterras" en zal aanvangen op woensdag 4 maart om 17:30. What do preliminary schools and garbage collection have in common? Indeed, both are areas where society benefits from mathematics! These days, lots of primary schools are digitizing and many are letting their pupils use tablets to solve exercises. Instead of letting them all make the same exercises, what if we can match exercises to a pupil's level? How do we determine then which exercises are difficult? And which pupils need more personal care? Mathematics will tell you how to solve this chicken and egg problem. Additionally, Marloes will show you how mathematics can save a municipality millions each year. The case will guide you through the steps of an ASML metrology engineer trying to diagnose the issue with the new wafer heating correction model. You will be learning about the model’s purpose and inner workings, studying machine measurement data, and proposing experiments in an attempt to pinpoint the problem and fix it.

About the caseAfter two years of intensive study and development, you proudly present your new and improved software package, meant to suppress wafer heating effects in ASML’s new 140 million euro scanner. Just in time, too, since the scanners are about to be shipped to customers.And then, after one week of use, it turns out not to work. This happened to us a time ago, and led to a frantic and broad search for the root cause of the problem. During the investigation, we had to consider not just the software, but also the software’s relation to the surrounding mechatronic system, and the basic physics involved. The wafer heating student case is based on our records of this period.

The case will guide you (in teams) through the steps of an ASML metrology engineer trying to diagnose the issue with the new wafer heating correction model. You will be learning about the model’s purpose and inner workings, studying machine measurement data, and proposing experiments in an attempt to pinpoint the problem and fix it. But don’t forget! The customer is already using the machine. You’d better hurry, because as always, time is money!

Using a ‘choose your own adventure’ style game, diagnose a design problem in the interaction of the wafer heating feed-forward functionality. The game is played in teams which compete with each other to see who solves the problem while spending the lowest amount of ‘effort’ points.

After last year's success of the Alexa workshop, Ortec Finance is back with a new workshop, Game of Homes!

In the Game of Homes, your team poses as Ortec Finance and will advise a struggling housing association which risks bankruptcy if nothing changes. It is your job to come up with a strategy involving rent policies, renovations and more. The housing association must remain financially healthy while fulfilling core goals like low rents and high sustainability. Your ideas are scored against economic scenarios provided by Ortec Finance. Beat your opponents, become the best consultant and win the Game of Homes!

You will implement strategies as formulas within programming code, but we set up the case such that you do not require extensive programming experience (although it can certainly help). The workshop involves some basic econometrics and computational modeling.

Note that there is a maximum of 20 participants!

With the Christmas holiday behind us, we look to the next festivity coming up! Like last year, FESTIVITEIT will be distributing roses at GEWIS on Valentine’s Day (February 14th). Do you have a secret crush you want to surprise? Would you like to treat your girl-/boyfriend? Do you want to let your friends know how much you appreciate them? Or do you want to give a rose to someone of the faculty? You can now buy one or more roses from the members of FESTIVITEIT for just one euro a piece! You will get a card from us, on which you can write a sweet message for the receiver of your rose. There’s a Cupidoos on the windowsill at GEWIS where you can hand in your cards. From there on out we’ll make sure that each message gets attached to a rose and that your beloved knows (via email) there’s a rose waiting for them at GEWIS on Friday February the 14th. The cards will be sold till Thursday February the 6th. So, if you love/like someone and want them to know this, buy them a rose!

Also, there will be two prizes! One for the person who bought the most roses, and one lottery prize, which will be awarded to the buyer of a random ticket. Of course we will make sure these two winners will not be the same person.

The rose receivers need to pick up their rose at GEWIS themselves. However if you sent a rose to a faculty member, and make this clear on the card, FESTIVITEIT will bring it to them.

Hooggeëerd publiek,

Wellicht dat sommigen van u al bekend zijn met het begrip “quizzen”. Menig I.V.V’er mag ook graag zo nu en dan meedoen aan een “pubquiz”. Als Dispuut “In Vino Veritas”, zullen wij een kans om onze onbegrensde kennis op de proef te kunnen stellen, nooit uit de weg gaan. Echter, wij merken vaak dat er iets mist bij de standaard “pubquizzen” en andere kennisbeproevingen; een bepaalde “je ne sais quoi”. We willen niet alleen kunnen bewijzen dat we in bezit zijn van kennis over triviale feitjes, waar je in het dagelijks leven vrij weinig aan hebt, nee, wij willen ook ons tactisch vermogen, waar zelfs een 5-sterrengeneraal trots op zou zijn, tentoonspreiden. Dus wanneer iemand, eventueel potentieel, over meer triviale kennis zou bezitten, betekent dit dan direct dat zij de “quiz” zouden moeten winnen? Natuurlijk niet, want niet alleen kennis is van belang. Wie “weinig” weet, kan proberen zijn tegenstanders weg te bluffen.

Wat is er nu mooier dan een tegenstander diep in de ogen aan te kijken, hiermee zijn ziel te doordringen en deze persoon te laten geloven dat hij een quizronde slechter heeft gespeeld dan uzelf, terwijl dit wellicht helemaal het geval niet is. Wanneer dit dan daadwerkelijk lukt en u op deze manier uw tegenstander verslaat geeft, dit een euforisch gevoel waar men u tegen zegt.

Om u ook te laten proeven van dit euforische genot, zal I.V.V een bluf- en kennisquiz organiseren naar het voorbeeld van het NPO-programma “Met het Mes op Tafel”. Omdat wij ook van een wijntje houden zullen wij dus een avond "Met De Fles Op Tafel" spelen. Aangezien de regels ietwat gecompliceerd zijn, raad ik ieder Nederlandssprekende deelnemer aan naar een aflevering van dit geweldige programma te kijken om zo het spelverloop te begrijpen. Daaraan toevoegend zullen aan het begin en tijdens de activiteit de spelregels en het spelverloop nogmaals worden uitgelegd.

Zoals u van ons gewend bent, zal u tijdens de speelrondes kunnen genieten van heerlijke hapjes en wijnen. Daarnaast zal na afloop een na-borrel plaatsvinden, waar u samen met uw quizmasters verder kunt genieten van de eerdergenoemde hapjes en wijnen.

Dit geweldige spektakel zal plaatsvinden op 11 februari 2020 te GEWIS. Er zullen maar 25 plekken beschikbaar zijn dus schrijf u tijdig in (de inschrijvingen gaan open op 5 februari 2020 om 12:00)

Vanderlande delivers material handling solutions, including systems that automate complete warehouses, which can be extremely large. The size and complexity of these systems make them impossible to test in real life. Imagine having to move 200 000 trays every time you need to redo a test. Within Vanderlande we solve this problem by building an emulation model. During this lunch presentation we will explain how our emulation model is built. Furthermore, we will discuss some other interesting developments within Vanderlande

The emulation model is built with Java and OpenGL. We’ll be discussing some of the technical challenges we’ve had to overcome, and of course our solutions to them. To facilitate our work, we’ve also implemented a DSL (domain specific language), which helps with modelling components typically seen in a warehouse or baggage handling system. We will use that to give you a general feeling of what we do on a daily basis.

On the 10th of Februari a mathematical genius will try to break a world record in headcounting! The specific task at hand for Willem Bouman is finding 4 squares that count up to a given number that consists of 5 digits.

After his record attempt there will be time to ask Willem some questions, and he will also elaborate how he factorizes these big numbers and how he uses squares for this.

On the 7th of February, SP!R!TS will be hosting a Smash Bros Tournament on the Wii’s at GEWIS! If you think you’re worthy to become the GEWIS Super Smash Champion and win a mysterious first prize, then take your favorite Nintendo character and join in to take part in our Free-For-All Double Elimination Bracket. TNO is an independent research organization who connects people and knowledge to create innovations that boost the sustainable competitive strength of industry and well-being of society. TNO focuses on nine themes, two of them being ICT and Industry who jointly cooperate in the Smart Industry program. This program aims to execute the Dutch Smart Industry Agenda in order to support manufacturing organizations embrace Industry 4.0 concepts. Mike de Roode is a Scientist Integrator at the Data Science department of TNO and is working on semantic interoperability solutions as part of the Smart Industry agenda.

An example project Mike is working on is the Fieldlab Smart Connected Supplier Network (SCSN), a collaboration between small and large manufacturing organizations, software vendors/integrators, and sector organizations. The goal of the SCSN project is to better integrate the manufacturing organizations in complex dynamic supply chain collaborations in such a way that they can optimally exchange order-, logistical- and production process measurement-data. This solution supports the complex environment of the high-tech equipment manufacturing Industry in the Brainport region and should work both for large enterprises, as for small SME’s which do not have the resources for extensive IT integration efforts. Nowadays, SCSN is implemented by almost all relevant software vendors so manufacturing organizations can use the standard to communicate with a large network of suppliers and customers, both national as international.

In the past (ask older members) the three TUs in the Netherlands have organized a special day where the members of the Mathematics and Computer Science Study Associations could meet eachother and have a fun day together. This was called a DET-day (for Delft, Eindhoven and Twente).

Now this has been a very long time ago, and Enschede wants to bring the DET-day back. Sadly, the Delft has already said that they do not have any interest in such a day. The question is: Do we?

For our ET-day some fun activities would be organized like a campus tour, maybe a pub quiz, and of course a `borrel' afterwards. The party that wants to organize it is also looking into options for participants to sleep in Twente so you can discover Enschede by night. This day is not yet planned, so it is fully dependent on this interest list if the activity will be organized.

Op zaterdag 1 februari 2020 arriveert er een groep internationale Erasmusstudenten op de TU/e campus om een geweldige intro-dag te beleven! Deze internationale studenten zullen hier voor minimaal een half jaar komen studeren, maar ze weten nog helemaal niks over Nederland, Eindhoven en over onze universiteit. Om deze studenten een vliegende start te geven en ze te helpen zich thuis te voelen hier, wordt deze intro-dag georganiseerd.

Iedere internationale student die deelneemt wordt gekoppeld aan een student van hier, een buddy! Daarvoor zoeken we jou! Op 1 februari zul je je buddy ontmoeten en neem je ze mee naar alle activiteiten gedurende deze intro-dag. Je zult deze dag veel nieuwe mensen ontmoeten van over de hele wereld. Buddy worden is geheel gratis en we gaan die dag gezellige activiteiten doen!

Bij deze nodig ik u daarom uit om 7 januari, vanaf 17.00 uur, samen met hèt dispuut “In Vino Veritas” te proosten op een decadent jaar en een nieuw decennium in te luiden onder het genot van een bubbel of vin.

Hooggeëerd publiek, Het is mij een grote eer en een waar genoegen u te mogen melden dat het Dispuut “In Vino Veritas” dit jaar wederom het Decadent Weekend zal gaan organiseren. In het weekend van dertien, veertien en vijftien december zullen wij zoals u van ons gewenst bent afreizen naar een prachtig kasteel om hier Het weekend van het jaar op te zetten. Vrijdag zullen we afreizen naar dit “schittermagische” kasteel. Eenmaal aangekomen zult u de mogelijkheid krijgen om te herstellen van uw lange en barre reis, van het gewone leven naar het decadente leven, onder het genot van een heerlijke maaltijd en zoals u van ons gewend bent de eersteklas wijnen. Daarnaast zullen wij op de nacht van vrijdag naar zaterdag het feit vieren dat zestien jaar geleden, de heren Beckers, Ceelen, Verheijen en Zwerts het licht zagen en alsof door een oproep van God bij elkaar kwamen om de samen Hét Dispuut In Vino Veritas op te richten. Dit memorabele stukje wereldgeschiedenis moet uiteraard met gepaste uitbundigheid worden gevierd, en hier zullen wij u dan ook alle mogelijkheden voor bieden. Nadat enkelen van u een stevig ontbijt zullen hebben verorberd en anderen onder u ervoor kiezen om de roes wat langer uit te slapen, zullen we het kasteel verlaten om een gedenkwaardige zaterdagmiddagactiviteit bij te wonen. Enkelen leden van Het Dispuut zullen achterblijven in het kasteel, niet om dit te verdedigen tegen een eventuele aanval. Maar om voor u een koninklijk 7-gangen feestmaal neer te zetten. Hier krijgt u het recht om te genieten van culinaire creaties die hun weerga niet kennen, en we zouden onszelf tekort doen om deze te beschrijven als iets anders dan “goddelijk”. Wanneer u terugkeert van de zaterdagmiddagactiviteit krijgt u de optie (lees verplichting) om uw kledij aan te passen naar kleding die eer doet aan wat u te wachten staat en past bij het decadente niveau van Het Weekend. Tussen de gangen door mag u genieten van entertainment van de hoogste plank, potverdrie wat bent u toch een gelukkig persoon dat u dit allemaal mag meemaken. Wanneer men uitgedineerd is zal er de mogelijkheid bestaan nog even, dan wel wat langer, na te tafelen onder het genot van de overgebleven, dan wel nieuw bijgehaalde wijnen, zodat iedereen met een voldaan en verzadigd gevoel ten langen leste zijn of haar bed kan opzoeken om de nacht in rust door te brengen. Wanneer u uit uw slaap ontwaakt ,en wellicht een kort ontbijt heeft genuttigd, zullen wij u verzoeken (kort) te helpen met het opruimen van het kasteel. You will share a table with 3 other members (4 people per table). The pooling starts at SPC Woensel at 19:00, but if you want to travel together with us, make sure you're at GEWIS at a quarter past six, so we can head to the pool centre by bike or public transportation.

Soms zit je met iemand ‘op dezelfde golflengte’ en soms lijkt het alsof je van totaal verschillende planeten komt. Met sommigen kun je goed overweg, met anderen heb je moeite.Wat doe je als de ander gedrag vertoont waar jij moeite mee hebt, bijvoorbeeld als je wordt aangesproken door een autoritaire gesprekspartner op een felle en dwingende toon? Of wat wordt je aanpak als je een timide en weinig spraakzame gesprekspartner ergens enthousiast over wil maken en het lukt niet? En hoe ga je om met een praatgrage en overenthousiaste collega die jou steeds overstemt tijdens een vergadering? De sleutel tot de antwoorden ligt in het begrijpen en toepassen van de psychologie die schuilgaat achter gedrag en de vele kleuren die je binnen dit gedrag kunt herkennen.

In deze training leer je hoe je mensen kunt herkennen aan hun gedrag en hoe je kunt omgaan met verschillende gedragingen. Enerzijds zodat je met hen een ‘klik’ kunt krijgen en je je eigen doelen kunt behalen. Anderzijds om conflicten te voorkomen en je staande te houden in voor jou lastige situaties.

The end of the first quartile is drawing near, which means that it is almost time for the 'Spellenspektakel' which is the largest boardgame convention of The Netherlands. Just like previous years GEWIS will be attending the event and by joining us you can attend for the discounted price of just 7 euros!

Unlike previous years the 'Spellenspektakel' will not take place in Eindhoven due to the closing of the Beursgebouw. The convention has therefore moved to the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht. We will therefore travel to the convention by train departing from Eindhoven Station. Luckily the organizers have teamed up with NS to create a special travel ticket that provides access to the event and a return ticket from Eindhoven. The ever growing collection of boardgames of GEWIS inspired us last year to organise the very first GEWIS boardgame tournament. This was a hit and so the second edition will be on October 18th which, of course, is a friday afternoon.

TLDR; Lunch lecture about Docker Containers and Microservices with free Domino's pizza! Modern software systems need to be flexible, scalable and reliable. The industry hype says that a combination of Docker containers with a Microservices based architecture is well suited to meet those demands. The presentation will show that there are good reasons for the claim and they are not just buzzwords. The talk will first provide a brief introduction into Docker containers and the Microservices architecture pattern. It will then describe a concrete case that Sioux is working on where a monolithic application is refactored into Docker based microservices, resulting in a flexible, scalable and reliable system. About the speaker: Henk van den Heuvel is a software architect at Sioux Technologies. He has worked with systems varying in size from 8 bit microcontrollers to scalable cloud based systems and is always eager to learn about new technologies. Het viel ons op dat veel leden een Switch hebben. En samen spelen is het leukst, dus het leek ons leuk dat we een low-key Switch-LAN partijtje hielden. Op zaterdag de 28e bij GEWIS zullen we dus een low-key Switch activiteitje doen. Breng je switch mee, en wellicht ook wat snacks, en dan kunnen we met elkaar gamen, friendcodes uitwisselen en wellicht wat spur-of-the-moment toernooitjes doen.

Hopelijk zien we je dan. Als je geen switch hebt, mag je uiteraard ook komen om lekker mee te spelen als iemand een plekje over heeft op zijn of haar console.

On September 24th we will organize the GEPWNAGE Pub Quiz. Our quizmaster will be the one and only Mark van Helvoort aka ZigZag, who also did the honours of creating the quiz. The pub quiz will take place in Hubble café on Tuesday, you are welcome from 20.00h and the first round will begin at 20.15h. The questions will range from --redacted-- to --redacted--, so if you are interested, gather your friends and form a team of at most 5 people (though keep in mind that some spots in Hubble only fit teams of 4 people).

Het is de derde week van het academische jaar, dus het is weer tijd voor de EAPC. Geef je op in teams van 3 om Java/C++/een andere taal te schrijven zodat je de felbegeerde EAPC wisseltrofee kan bemachtigen. Zoals ieder jaar zorgt GEHACK ervoor dat de interne mens goed onderhouden wordt tijdens, maar ook ná de wedstrijd. Lunch, drinken en snacks zijn inbegrepen, net als een klein biertje/cola na het harde coden. Daarom luidt ons advies ook om je in te schrijven voor dit epische evenement, want thuis blijven is duurder! Voor eerstejaars studenten is het extra aantrekkelijk om mee te doen, want bij serieuze deelname aan de wedstrijd wordt er één extra huiswerkopdracht van 2IP90 weggestreept. Vanwege de grote hoeveelheid interesse kunnen alleen de eerste 125 deelnemers meedoen.

Data Science with purpose – Dat is het motto waaronder Pipple gestart is op een zolderkamertje in Eindhoven. Ondertussen zijn er 3 jaren voorbij gegaan en past de club data scientists en data engineers al lang niet meer op een zolderkamer, sterker nog, door onze snelle groei is zelfs het tweede Pipple kantoor al opgestart! Deze snelle groei is mogelijk geweest door ontzettend gave projecten in zowel logistieke richting als data science bij klanten zoals DHL, CoolBlue, Achmea en Philips. Daarnaast zijn we ons motto niet uit het oog verloren en helpen we de data afdeling van het Rode Kruis met verscheidene opdrachten en het begeleiden van afstudeerders en stagaires die aan Rode Kruis projecten kunnen werken. Als het je leuk lijkt om meer te horen over onze purpose projecten en ons bedrijf dan kan dat tijdens te lunchlezing op 10 september!

Het nieuwe collegejaar is reeds van start gegaan, maar hoewel eenieder zijn eigen gebruiken hanteert omtrent het inluiden van een nieuw academisch jaar - waar de één wellicht vol goede moed de intentie zal hebben dubbele cijfers aan studiepunten binnen te slepen gedurende het aankomende kwartiel, zal de ander allicht minder motivatie uit de mouw weten te schudden - kunnen we het met zijn allen over minstens één feit eens zijn: we zijn zonder uitzondering toe aan meer vakantie.

Gelukkig kunt u ook dit jaar wederom rekenen op Hèt Dispuut "In Vino Veritas" om u te voorzien in deze behoefte; woensdag 4 september 2019 zal in 'Het Dakterras' weeral een le-gen-darische Maand'lijksche Borrel plaats vinden. Ditmaal zal er, naast de gebruikelijke waanzinnige wijn en verrukkelijke versnaperingen, ook heerlijke exotische whisky geschonken worden, rechtstreeks geïmporteerd uit het verre Oosten. Komt dus allen een reis door het prachtige Azië beleven aan de hand van deze heerlijke dranken, onder het genot van aangenaam gezelschap en volledig verzorgde hapjes. Imagine that having to hack an industrial site, factory, ship or powerplant is part of your job description. How would you do this? In this presentation, I will try to shed a light on the projects, the process, thoughts, decisions and the experiences of performing this type of work each day. Industrial environments are interesting legacy playground evolving into super powerful data beasts with latest tech nowadays. I will try to touch both technical and non-technical considerations when acting as cyber security specialist in the wild. The presentation will be an informal setting of sharing experiences, war stories and team photos (and victories) how this particular engineer-turned-into-researcher-and-evolved-into-consultant tries to help world become a better place and have some fun at work.

Op zaterdag 31 augustus 2019 arriveert er een groep internationale Erasmusstudenten op de TU/e campus om een geweldige intro-dag te beleven! Deze internationale studenten zullen hier voor minimaal een half jaar komen studeren, maar ze weten nog helemaal niks over Nederland, Eindhoven en over onze universiteit. Om deze studenten een vliegende start te geven en ze te helpen zich thuis te voelen hier, wordt deze intro-dag georganiseerd. Iedere internationale student die deelneemt wordt gekoppeld aan een student van hier, een buddy! Daarvoor zoeken we jou! Op 31 augustus zul je je buddy ontmoeten en neem je ze mee naar alle activiteiten gedurende deze intro-dag. Je zult deze dag veel nieuwe mensen ontmoeten van over de hele wereld. Buddy worden is geheel gratis en we gaan die dag gezellige activiteiten doen! Dus wil jij buddy worden? Schrijf je dan hieronder in om student aan je gekoppeld te krijgen! Lieve leden, nu de tentamens dichterbij komen, zijn wij al weer vooruit aan het kijken naar leuke plannen voor de zonnige zomer. Gezien jullie waarschijnlijk ook al aan het brainstormen zijn over welke exotische eilanden te bezoeken en welke extravagante festivals je gaat bezoeken. Défi is hier om deze keuze net iets makkelijker voor je te maken: Op zaterdag 3 augustus gaan we namelijk naar de Kanaal Parade in Amsterdam!

De Kanaal Parade begint om 12:30 vanaf de Scheepsvaart, dus we zullen rond 12:00 verzamelen bij Amsterdam CS. De precieze tijden zullen tijdig gecommuniceerd worden naar de deelnemers. De Kanaal Parade eindigt rond 17:00, maar de after parties beginnen al om 16:00 , dus we zullen de bekendste daarvan ook even gaan bekijken! Mocht je echter later aan willen sluiten of eerder naar huis willen gaan, mag dit natuurlijk ook!

Het festival is dus helemaal gratis. Het enige waar je voor hoeft te betalen (en zelf moet regelen) is het vervoer naar en van Amsterdam. Je kunt echter een groepsretour regelen voor ongeveer 5 euro per persoon*. Dus, mocht je geïnteresseerd zijn in deze groep deal, schrijf je daar dan ook mee in op de website en regel zelf een groepje om samen mee te reizen.

Dus ben je straight, gay, lesbisch, biseksueel, transgender, intersex, queer, nieuwsgierig, aseksueel, panseksueel, gender-non-conforming, gender-fluid, non-binary, androgyn, geen van bovenstaande of juist alles van bovenstaande, zorg dan dat je je snel inschrijft!

Geachte GEWIS’sers,

Bij dezen informeer ik u dat hét Dispuut In Vino Veritas u op 8 juli aanstaande graag welkom heet, om ons te vergezellen voor het wonderlijke I.V.V Spel met Ballen. Hier heeft u de mogelijkheid om onder het genot van een zalig hapje en drankje uw competitieve aard door te laten schijnen daar waar u met een team van twee het tegen leden dér Dispuut en andere GEWIS leden kan opnemen in de hoop uw team te voorzien van eeuwige glorie.

Hét Dispuut zal u voorzien van enkele lekkernijen en uiteraard een goed gevuld glas wijn. Het enige dat we van u vragen is het meebrengen van goede zin en een kleine vergoeding van €3,50, de rest zal voor u worden verzorgd.
