Continue readingOn this afternoon, the Défi lustrum week will officially start! And the bravest among us will join Défi on an abseiling adventure of Vertigo! This is the chance to challenge our natural fear of heights, and to see the campus from a whole new perspective. While that sounds exciting, we understand it can be scary to step out of your comfort zone. But you don’t have to worry, because once you have successfully completed the abseil, Défi, Wolfpack and the BAC will welcome you back on the ground with a nice cold drink in your hand. We will gather all the victors and celebrate their succes at this victory borrel.
There is also good news for those who were unable to participate in the abseiling activity. The victory borrel is open for all GEWIS members so that we can celebrate the succes stories together. At the start of the borrel, you can even watch the last group making their way down Vertigo. Meanwhile, Wolfpack will make sure that there are some nice beers and sodas while cheering the last group on (rumour has it that they bought a keg for you all).
So whether you want to celebrate our lustrum, your abseiling succes or if you want to cheer the victors on from a distance, we hope to see you at the borrel!
(Do note that you can not drink alcohol before you go abseiling!! If you do, you are no longer allowed to go abseiling.)
Continue readingDear member,
Picture this: you, standing at the top of one of the tallest buildings on campus, heart racing, as you prepare to descend into the thrill of a lifetime. Five years ago, Défi organized abseiling from Vertigo, which was the final step for Défi to become a fraternity.
Soon, Défi will turn five years old. To kick off our Lustrum week, we are going to abseil from Vertigo again in collaboration with the Eindhoven Student Alpine Club (ESAC) and Wolfpack!
But the excitement doesn’t end when your feet touch the ground! Once you’ve successfully made your descent, you’ll be welcomed back with a well-earned borrel. Gather with fellow adventurers, share your stories of triumph, and toast to an unforgettable day. Rumour has it that Wolfpack has bought a keg for you all.
Note that there are only 90 spots available, so be quick to subscribe! If there are more subscriptions before Thursday, September 26, 23:59, there will be a draw. You can indicate whether you prefer the morning or afternoon, based on which we will get a timeslot assigned. However, please keep this date as open as possible in your schedule.
Curious what this will look like? Read and see what it looked like five years ago!

Set your course for a grand adventure across the serene waters of Loosdrecht, where the wind will be our guide and the sails our wings. Step aboard the trusty Polyvalk, a sturdy vessel fit for both seasoned sailors and eager newcomers alike. With room for up to five souls per boat, there’s space for everyone, whether you wish to take the helm or simply relax and soak in the beauty of the day.
With several experienced sailors on board, you'll be in good hands throughout the voyage. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor yourself or completely new to the waters, there’s no need to worry—we’ll guide you through every step of the way. You’ll have the freedom to take part as much or as little as you like. If the weather is kind, take a refreshing dip in the lake or just sit back and enjoy the ride from the comfort of the boat. And don’t worry—if swimming isn’t for you, you can stay dry and still enjoy the adventure!
At midday, we’ll chart a course to a charming island for a well-deserved lunch break. Picture yourself stepping ashore, the sun shining overhead, surrounded by the calm of nature. We’ll relax, share stories, and enjoy good company as we take in the views and savor our meal.
No previous sailing experience is required to join this voyage—it’s all about having a good time on the water, no matter your skill level. So gather your friends, bring your sense of adventure, and prepare for a memorable day!
We’re making travel arrangements, and if we can gather enough cars, we’ll drive together to Loosdrecht. Otherwise, we’ll hop on public transport and make the journey part of the adventure.
Fair winds and smooth sailing await. Will you answer the call?
See you there! GEZWEM
Continue readingThroughout your academic career, you will need to use LaTeX many many times. Now, there are two paths you can take; get to know LaTeX, fall in love, get married, and live happily together throughout your studies. Or, refuse to use LaTeX until you are forced to, at which point you will be confused, disoriented, and frustrated with it. I think we both know which of those two options is preferable.
As a mathematics student, you will need to use LaTeX already in the first quartile, but computer science students will have to use it as well later this year. To prepare you properly for this, TRAIN is organizing a LaTeX training, during which you will be guided through the basics of how to use it for your homework assignments. All you need to bring is your laptop!
To keep your body fueled, we will provide some free snacks and drinks. We look forward to seeing you there!

Continue readingData in the Built Environment – Why nothing has changed in 2000 years
Have you ever wondered why every building project goes over budget and does not meet its original planning? Or why that annoying pothole in front of your home never gets fixed? I (Sander de Meij, from BIM-Connected) suggest that’s because the Built Environment has not really changed that much since the first time we started making buildings thousands of years ago.
Part of this issue is the incredibly inefficient way the Built Environment implements data, digital tools and other ‘smart’ solutions. We at BIM-Connected help this industry to move into the future by implementing intelligent data solutions using Linked Data and the Semantic Web.
Do you want to learn more about Linked Data in general (or specifically within the Built Environment) or how we have built an exciting piece of software which allows us to build data-driven applications in minutes? Join us during this lunch lecture to discuss what it means to be a ‘knowledge engineer’ or a dedicated software engineer within the Built Environment.
Note: after subscribing, showing up is mandatory! There are 135 spots only with first come first serve and GEWIS members get priority. You can earn 1 my future activity with this lecture.

Continue readingHey first-years!
Today, on this fateful day, a most wonderful event will occur: the new First Year Committees will be formed! Last week, on Thursday, I organised a nice information meeting in which I explained what FYCs are, and let several FYCs from last year share their experiences. If you missed it and would still like to know more about FYCs, you can almost always find me in GEWIS, and I'm always up for a quick chat about them!
If I'd have to summarise the concept of an FYC really quickly, I'd do it as follows: It's essentially a group of first-years, with the main goal of getting to know each other and having a lot of fun. It also offers the opportunity to, as a group, get to know GEWIS a bit better, go to fun activities, and making friends that will stay with you for the rest of your studies.
During this meeting, you'll form groups that will afterwards become our new FYCs, and get some time to brainstorm a name for your group, as well as other fun ideas that you might want to do throughout the year. I hope to see you all there!
If you would like to join this meeting but are unable to, or decide later that you would still like to join an FYC, please contact me!
Continue readingDo you love tea, cakes or fun games? Do you want different tea flavours than the ones at GEWIS? If so, on Tuesday the 24th of September from 18.00 to 21.00 your dreams will come true! We have just the activity for you: ATHENA's High Tea Tuesday. We will provide you with tea bags and some fresh ingredients you need to make your own perfect blend. And don't worry, we will also provide multiple black tea flavours. Not a tea lover? No problem! You can get your favourite drinks yourself at your own cost from the bar and still join in on the fun and snacks.
I hear you thinking, how much will this all cost? Well, it is totally free, the only thing you need to do is bake or bring snacks to share with the group. So you can bring along a sweet or savoury snack like brownies or mini sandwiches. In addition, ATHENA will also bake two amazing cakes for everyone to try!
Warm hugs,
ATHENA🦉🩵🩷

Continue readingHey first-years!
During the introduction week you might have heard someone (probably Jens) talk about First Year Committees (FYCs). These committees are mainly meant for first-year students to connect with each other and provide an easy way for you to get to know the association a bit better.
Aside from the social aspects of FYCs, they also allow you to learn a lot of new skills, like organising activities, leading meetings, taking minutes, and many others. Don't be worried about the workload though, as FYCs have no real obligations; the main goal of them is to help you enjoy your year, so you can put as much time as you feel like you have into them.
During this meeting, I'll give you a brief explanation on how FYCs work, and some FYCs from last year will also join to share experiences from their committees. There will also be free lunch for everyone attending! I hope to see you there.
NOTE: Attending this meeting is without obligations! You can always choose not to join an FYC afterwards.

Continue readingFlunkyball is a game where two teams compete against eACh other. You and your team stand on one side of the field next to eACh other, with a CAnned drink in front of eACh person. In the middle of the field stands a bottle. Each team takes turns trying to knock over the bottle with a ball. If the bottle is toppled, the whole team CAn start drinking until the opponents have set the bottle upright again, brought the ball back behind their line, and all players are standing by their CAns again. The team that finishes drinking all their CAns first wins.
So, do you want to prove you're the best at chugging, show off your aim, or just feel like playing Flunkyball? Sign up now! You CAn join with half-liter CAns of beer (6% alcohol), radler (3% alcohol), or soft drinks.
The idea is to form 4 teams. The winners of the first match will play in the winners' final, and the losers will also get an extra game. The €5 contribution is to buy 6 CAns, which should be enough for two games as long as you don’t get too many penalty CAns. If there are CAns left at the end of the game, there will be room for some extra matches after the competition.
There is no food list for the event, but the AC will be grabbing a kapsalon at Hizmet at 18:00 before setting up the ACtivity. So feel free to join us for dinner there!
See you then! Hugs, AC

Continue readingDear members of s.v. GEWIS,
The celebration of academia is a tradition that dates back to ancient times. This university also participates in these cheerful celebrations every year. However, while the celebrating public gathers in the Blauwe Zaal, Hèt Dispuut opts for a celebration with a more intimate and traditional ambiance, where the true academic spirit can flourish.
Fraternity "In Vino Veritas" cordially invites the members of the association to celebrate the start of a new academic year together. This year, Amuse cards will be sold, which feature a selection of refined Dutch delicacies.
On September 2 from 5:00 PM, I.V.V welcomes you for an evening of conviviality and good taste. In addition to the delicious amuses, Hèt Dispuut will provide you with (sparkling) wine and other snacks, to stimulate good conversations that look at daily affairs with a critical eye.
In honor of this occasion, we kindly request that you wear appropriate clothing.
Proost!
Quaestor B. Henkemans der Dispuut "In Vino Veritas"

We will hand out the books from 12 o'clock onwards. To ease the wait between the laptop and book pickup, we will provide some free lunch, and games for you to play. So meet up with all the nice people you met during the introduction week and reminisce about how fun the week has been and look forward together to the start of the academic year.
When you pick up your book, you will also get a voucher for a free soda or beer. You can only use them at the social drink that afternoon, which starts at 16:30. So make sure to hang around!
You can find us outside on the field between Metaforum and Atlas, next to the pond.
If the weather turns out badly, we will move inside to the GEWIS room

Continue readingAre you excited for summer, man?
The BAC is excited for summer, man! And how can you better enjoy summer than with a beach? Well, by not having to bike all the way to Best! For us, even walking to the IJzeren Man is too far. No, for this ultimate summer experience, you don't even have to leave the campus!
But do you know what the problem is with most beaches? Sand! We don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and annoying, and it gets everywhere. However, the whole beach lounging thing is pretty great.
Can you picture it: beach chairs, cocktails, beer that doesn't cost 8 euros, Desperados, music, and more. That's why the BAC presents the perfect solution for everyone who really wants to enjoy summer: the "Strand zonder Zand" Party.
Can you already see yourself in a beach chair with an ice-cold Desperados or a cocktail, enjoying Playa del Atlas at its finest! Then be sure to come on August 15th with your sunglasses to the best beach without sand.
Continue readingNext week is the interim exam period. Of course you need a nice place to study. You might think about going to the crowded library, but we have a better idea!
From Wednesday August 7th until Friday evening August 16th you will be able to study in MF3.103, and MF3.105! Of course, this is awesome because:
Tea and coffee are seconds awayYou can use our books to study (ask the board before borrowing please)You can work together with your friends and ask advice from those who have already mastered the courses you are currently working on!One of the rooms will be a designated silence room, and one will be for collaboration.
Hope to see you there and good luck with your exams!
Continue readingDear GEWIS'ers,
At this point, you might have started to worry, as the summer has started already some time ago and you haven't seen our lovely yearly activity happen yet. But please do not get anxious, as the time has finally come to drink some wine in this lovely weather, and enjoy yourselves by throwing some balls.
This year, "In Vino Veritas" is organising an even more exciting "Spel met Ballen", as it is combined with an activity that we are well-known for, the Month'like drink. This means that while playing the lovely game with balls, you can enjoy a very nice glass of wine and even the usual delicacies of the Month'like drink.
Together with a partner, you are able to subscribe in order to participate in the official "Spel met Ballen" tournament and battle other teams for a chance to win the challenge cup. Beware though, the subscription list closes the Sunday before the activity.
Don't worry though, if you're not up for playing a couple rounds on the field, you can also just come and enjoy the borrel.
We hope to see you on the field,
Fraternity "In Vino Veritas"
Continue readingDear drinkers,
About a month ago the BAC had a fantastic time behind the bar at the BorrelXL. Here one could enjoy delicious beer, viper, soft drinks but also wine. Unfortunately, the latter was not enjoyed as much and so the BAC has an abundance of wine (after a mistake by the buyer).
Now we are not I.V.V and we just want to have an abundance of beer. That's why we decided to sell it for a promotional price of €5.00 per bottle. You can walk up to a BAC member to see if they can grab a few bottles for you.
Thank you in advance!
Greetings,
Sven Mokveld, buyer of the BAr Commission s.v. GEWIS
Continue readingOn June 28th a new online-only season of Wie is de Mol starts and we want organise a small competition to see who is best at finding the Mole.
Every week after the episodes air (2 per week on Fridays) we will send a short survey with questions about the Mole and you have until the release of the next episodes to answer them.
After only a few weeks we will find out who who the Mole was on July 19th and that is when we will crown our winner too.
The TV-show is in Dutch, but English subbed episodes usually arrive pretty fast somewhere on the internet. So if your Dutch is no good but you are interested and still want to join that should be possible and we will try to accommodate.
The episodes can be watched for free at npo.nl/start and more information about the season such as the announcement and a list of the participants can be found at: https://wieisdemol.avrotros.nl/nieuws-item/onbekende-nederlanders-op-zoek-naar-de-mol-in-oman/
Continue readingOn the 4th of July, we will host the inauguration drink for the 43rd board of GEWIS! During the inauguration drink, a lot of external associations, the department board, GEWIS bodies and members can come to congratulate the new board. We will celebrate their installation with a night full of free beers and amazing memories.
For the inauguration drink, we do need a lot of volunteers. We have to empty the room, protect the board and guestbook during the drink and bring the board home after the drink. We would like to know whether you are available for any of these tasks. Please note: bringing the board home means you are sober. If you are available, please fill in this form.
The obligatory infomeeting, at which everything about the order committee will be explained, takes place on Wednesday June 19th from 12:40 till 13:20. The location will be announced later!
Note that for non-volunteers, the borrel starts around 19:00 (the internal part).
If you have any remaining questions, send a mail to orde@gewis.nl.
