    Wednesday 16 Jun. 2021 19:00 - 22:00

Due to the covid pandemic, social life has deteriorated quite a bit. This is true for you as a student and your lecturers. TRAIN, first-year students of the FYC’s Meerkats and GeLØL want to give you a chance to catch up on all the missed small talk this year in our Online Café! After a short and handy workshop on social networking organized by trainers Imre Végh and Jan Reinder Rosing from “Project Wijsheid” (you might know them from Motivation in Isolation and Willpower!).

You will have the chance to meet and get to know 13 of your lecturers and other important people from TU/e on a more personal, casual level. You will be placed in a group with 2 or 3 other students so you also have the opportunity to expand your social network with colleague students. You are encouraged to just grab a beer, grab a snack, sit back and just chat about whatever comes to mind. Make sure to think about some questions or topics you want to talk about with the lecturers and others. In case the conversation gets stuck, you can always rely on some interesting topics and conversation starters as well as some interesting videos and situations to talk about.

It will be free but please unsubscribe if it turns out you're not available so we can make place for another person. We hope to see you there!

  • Many high-school students are doing their final exams right now and studying hard to be able to come to the TU/e next year. As many of you might remember, the university always organizes a study-choice check for prospective students. Like last year, GEWIS gets the opportunity to close off the rather serious day with a fun pubquiz! It's a wonderful opportunity for high-school students to get to know each other, but also for us, as GEWIS, to meet our soon-to-be members!

On the evening of June 15, the board will organize up a pubquiz for small groups of high-school students coming to study Applied Mathematics under guidance of GEWIS members. And that's where we need you! Do you want to help out on this cozy evening to meet and guide a small group of upcoming students? Subscribe below!

You don't have to study Applied Mathematics to volunteer for the pubquiz! More details will follow later.

  • Introparent Bonding Activity

    Monday 14 Jun. 2021 16:00 - 20:00

(Be aware, this event is only for people who registered to be an intro-parent)

Disclaimer: It is not yet certain that this activity can take place in another form than mentioned below or at all.

    Dear introparent,

Fortunately, there is a chance that this year we can have an introparent bonding activity (IBA)! This activity will take place on the 14th of June. During this activity we will be playing some games to get you acquainted with the introtheme. These games will be a surprise for now 🙂. This activity will be set up similarly to the borrels; you should subscribe with your fellow introparent and you will be placed on a yellow table together with another pair of parents. To make sure we can facilitate this activity for all subscribed introparents, we have to split up the IBA in two different timeslots. The first timeslot will be from 16:00 until 17:50. The second one will be from 18:10 until 20:00. When subscribing you can indicate which timeslot you prefer or indicate if you are not available in one. When indicating your preference please take into account that during the second timeslot, there will also be another GEWIS activity, namely the pubquiz for new students. So make sure you do not subscribe for both at the same time. (The BAC will be serving drinks so bring your BAC coins with you!) We hope to see you all!

Note: dinner will not be arranged. However, we will make sure there are some snacks for you.

  • Euroteq Gaming App Hackathon

    Fri. 11 Jun. 2021 (18:00) - Sat. 12 Jun. 2021 (20:00)

    WHAT

EuroTeQ Engineering University is looking for an app to reach out to its students and collect their feedback in a continuous and fun way. The app should include elements of gamification and should allow us to collect feedback and share lessons learnt with targeted groups that use the app.The app is supposed to be engaging and should make students enthusiastic about participating continuously. One way of using gamification is introducing a friendly competitive element to the app. Think of a set of triggers that use university and regional pride to facilitate exchanging ideas and feedback competitively.

OUR MOTTO: DARE TO MAKE IT FUN!

What the app should look like is up to you! Teams will have 24 hours to develop a design idea and a pitch to show their idea to the judges. You do not have to create a demo version (but you can, of course!). We will provide the participating teams with a starter kit, including markers, post-its, merchandise and snacks to get you started. At the end of the 24 hours, each team will have 5 minutes to pitch their app design idea to the judges. How you pitch your idea is up to you. Just make sure you meet the brief: the app should be a tool for asking feedback and should include gamification elements.

You can pitch your design idea in any way you like, as long as we can watch it via Twitch livestream. Get creative!

All participants of the winning team will get their very own 3D printer!

    WHERE

Central introduction, pitches and crowning of the winner will happen online via Twitch live stream and communication between teams will be facilitated via Discord.EuroTeQ Engineering University offers all participating teams a starter kit, including markers, post-its, drinks and snacks to get you all started.

  • FYS Picknick

    Friday 11 Jun. 2021 12:30 - 13:30

What is your favorite thing to do when you have a break from lectures and instructions? That’s right, eat, drink and talk with friends. We want to organize an activity where all these things come together, namely a free picnic on campus.

On Friday, the 11th of June in the break (12:30-13:30), there will be one for you guys! You will get a little lunch package from us with some sandwiches, snacks and of course a (non-alcoholic) drink. All you have to bring is a good mood and “gezelligheid”.

You can subscribe below. Also, we want you to make a choice for the sandwiches and drinks so we can order exactly what you want. We do have a limit on the number of people allowed, so if there are too many people the first 50 will have a place to sit. If you are not with the first 50 people then you can pick up the lunch package but cannot attend the picnic.

The activity is meant as an opportunity for first year students, both in- and outside of GEWIS to meet each other under a nice lunch. This means that in case the hard limit is reached, first year students will have priority.

  • BAC + 39th Board GoBo Borrel 🍑

    Thursday 10 Jun. 2021 18:15 - 20:00

    Dear members,

The planned constitution drink unfortunately wasn't in the cards, at least not according to our original plans. Instead we opted for a nice collaboration with the BAC to set-up a wonderful borrel where you can still enjoy the company of the current board in their full glory while they're still here!

You can sign up with a borrelbuddy, much like regular borrels. The theme is peach, so have a look through your wardrobe! 🍑🍑🍑Alternatively, order-committee-like attire or GEWIS ties also come highly recommended. To reward you for still showing your love to the current board we will provide you with a nice 'bestuursdrankje' on the side as well.

If more people are signed up than the capacity allows for we will have to hold a draw. Please note that the subscription deadline is Wednesday the 9th of June at 23:59 and we expect you to be there during the entire duration!

We look forward to seeing you,

    Distant hugs,

The 39th board of GEWIS 🍑

  • National Mathematics Symposium

    Friday 4 Jun. 2021 09:30 - 16:00

W.S.G. Abacus, the study association for Applied Mathematics at the University of Twente, annually organizes a symposium oriented on mathematics. This year we have the great honor of organizing a Nationaal Wiskunde Symposium (NWS). This NWS will take place online on Friday the 4th of June 2021. The theme of this year’s NWS will be “Find your limit”.

During the current pandemic humankind, society, companies, and many more things are pushed to find their limits. Social distancing and other measures were applied based on mathematical models about the pandemic. While we believe enough is being spoken about the limiting factors of this pandemic, we became very interested in other limits that humans, society, and mathematics encounter. Some interesting talks during this NWS will cover (among others):

the limit of social media (fake news)the limit of the human life span

Enroll before the 23rd of May for a goody bag. You will then be welcome to join the NWS, including many interesting presentations. The full program of the day can be found here. You will also find some information about all lectures and lecturers there. If you have any questions or comments, please contact the board or the organizing party.

    Thursday 3 Jun. 2021 12:40 - 13:20

Simulation in a multidisciplinary engineering project

In this talk we look at how we can simulate a complex, multidisciplinary industrial process. Specifically, we look at the so-called Energiefabriek (Energy factory) in Hengelo. The Energiefabriek creates energy out of waste water sludge (=sewage). This projects involves chemical engineering, mechanical eng., electrical eng., and process automation. We created a simulator that lets you simulate the behaviour of all of these disciplines. We look at how we created it, and how we can use it to optimize the design of the Energiefabriek. Using an online Jupyter notebook, you are yourself invited to try and optimize the simulation model and solve our (self-inflicted) bugs.Witteveen+Bos is an engineering and consultancy firm, which specializes in projects in the fields of infrastructure, water, environment and construction. • Lunch Lecture Sioux

    Tuesday 1 Jun. 2021 12:40 - 13:20

Sioux Technologies partners with companies abroad (Romania, Germany, Vietnam and China) to extend their possibilities worldwide. Working with teams abroad can be challenging. You work on different locations and even in different time zones. In addition to that, you also need to overcome the language barriers and cultural differences. Making it feel as one team is challenging, but certainly not impossible. In this talk you will get insights in working with remote teams, the practical side, and the benefits. The talk is given by Koen van Langen.

Koen is a Senior Software Designer and has worked with remote teams on several projects. In his role he is responsible to collect requirements from the customer, create designs out of it and together with the team members abroad solve the problems of the customer. Koen guides and coaches the abroad team members to get to a qualified software solution. He combines a technical role, e.g., writing code, design, etc., with a more process-oriented role, by guiding the process and the team members from design to delivery.

GEWIS members will get the opportunity to receive free lunch, either by picking up a free Hubble lunch box (online participation) or there will be lunch facilitated (on campus participation). Currently we can not guarantee that the lecture will be hosted on campus. There will be a maximum of 30 places available for on campus participation.

The idea is to go ski for a (mid) week in the Alps during the first week of Q3, included in the trip for around 300 euros will be the transport to and from the Alps, the accommodation and breakfast, and lastly of course the ski pass. If you are thinking what an amazing trip but I don't like skiing we are also looking into the possibility to subscribe for a reduced price of around 150 euro without a ski pass included. This would be for the people who want to enjoy nature another way or who are only interested in the partying and après skiing.

We would like to get to know how many people would be interested in a fun ski trip and whether this interest would be for skiing or only for partying/après skiing without a ski pass for a reduced price. The ski trip would most likely be a (mid) week long. If you have any other comments then please also let us know, even if you don't want to join the trip but still have anything to say you can subscribe.

tldr;Interest list for a lustrum ski trip!

  • GEWIS Committee Market 2020/2021

    Monday 31 May. 2021 12:15 - 13:45

    Dear members / interestees,

As you might imagine GEWIS needs a lot of enthusiastic students to keep operating as our study association has been doing for years. To make sure this all continues smoothly GEWIS has a lot of committees that each have their own identity and function. Being a part of committee is very useful for learning new domain-specific things, but you can also have a lot of fun together! How do you find out which committee might be interesting for you? Not to worry, we'll make it easy for you by collecting all of our committees at a central location where they're all ready to answer any questions you might have.

Much like other years, this year will also feature a committee market! Come and have a nice chat with our different committees to find out whether they might be something you would like to be a part of!

GEWIS has many committees, varying from looking after our computers to setting up a weekend in which you go sailing. To just name a few of the fields are committees work in:

Setting up fun activities for the association and its members, as well as students of our faculty. Varying from sponsored poker tournaments to organizing "Wie is de mol"-inspired weekends.Setting up events in the field of personal development and careerSetting up events in the field of educationMaintaining GEWIS' website and building new featuresMaintaining GEWIS' hardware, software and mail servicesLooking after GEWIS' styling and coming up with new designsCreating and distributing our magazine: SupremumTaking pictures during activities

Plenty of fun things to do, experiences from which you can also learn a lot!

As the informational overview suggests this year's edition of the committee market will take place on the platform Gather.town. Use this link to join the online gathering space. You do not have to be a member or be enrolled in this activity to join the online space, but it would greatly help us with making an estimate for the capacity for the activity!

    See you soon!

  • FESTIVITEIT Small Holidays Appreciation Week

    Mon. 31 May. 2021 (10:00) - Sat. 5 Jun. 2021 (23:59)

Every day is a holiday. And no, we’re not just saying that because we like holidays – it really is a special day every day, and as FESTIVITEIT we would love to celebrate all these days. However, most years we give priority to the bigger holidays, and the smaller ones get forgotten. But not this year! The small holidays deserve some recognition too, and that’s why we’ll dedicate an entire week to celebrating small holidays!

For each day of this week, we’ve selected a theme (to celebrate a holiday) and a colour (to celebrate pride month). Your job is to do something with this theme or this colour. You can put as much creativity and effort in this as you like: if, for example, the colour is purple and the theme is peanut butter, you can eat some peanut butter, create some purple peanut butter, make a dish using peanut butter, take a picture of something purple, make some art with peanut butter, write a poem in purple ink about peanut butter, do a photoshoot with peanut butter… you name it!

Each of your submissions will earn you points. The participant(s) with the most points at the end of the week will earn a prize. You'll receive a point if you submit something related to the theme or colour. You can receive an extra point by combining the theme and colour in one submission, or by making the most creative submission. The winner can choose between 3 pc games in which they can use their creativity.

So don’t hesitate and come celebrate some holidays with us!

  • Mixed Years borrel

    Friday 28 May. 2021 16:30 - 19:00

    Dear members,

After the great success of the First Years Borrel in the first quartile, FYS is hyped to announce the “Mixed Year’s Borrel” . Together with the BAC, we would like to give first years the chance to have a chat with the older members of GEWIS.

As we want First-Years to experience the social drink as it was before the pandemic, this borrel will be very similar to what once was considered a borrel in the GEWIS room, but then outside. Which is to say a lot of Grolsch, Broodjes Knak and some drinks well known throughout the association.

During this borrel every table will consist of two first-years and two older members. In other words, you can subscribe in pairs!

Disclaimer: Subscribe before Wednesday the 26th of May at 12:00h. We will create a mix of first year and older year students such that 50% will be first years and 50% will be older years. In case there are more people subscribed than can attend, we will have a draw.

  • GeLØL Cocktail Night

    Friday 21 May. 2021 20:00 - 22:00

    Hello beautiful members of GEWIS!

FYC 21-3 GELØL will be hosting a cocktail night! We will be streaming on the 21st of May. If you choose to sign up, we will provide you with several ingredients that you will use to make four epic cocktails with us during the stream! The ingredients can be picked up at a place and time we will provide later via email.

During the stream, we will also provide some interesting facts per cocktail, but we of course won’t be doing only cocktail making, as we have some fun segments in between to lighten the mood. Spoiler alert: there will be an epic Kahoot quiz.

You can even choose to get together with a couple of friends (to the extent the current measures allow) and sign up together to enjoy the cocktails in great company! If you’re curious, as an example, we’ll be making a Blue Hawaii(an). And more of course, but we don’t want to spoil too much!

Unfortunately, we have to put a hard limit on the number of people that can sign up. This is because ordering and packing ingredients has to happen in advance. We have decided to enforce a limit of 60 people. But don’t be sad and sign up before the 14th of May! We will use first come first serve policy.

We hope to see you on Friday the 21st!

  • GELIMBO Quiz Special Edition: 1 vs. 111

    Wednesday 19 May. 2021 19:11 - 23:11

This year, GELIMBO returns with a very special edition of the annual GELIMBO Quiz. Year after year, you had the possibility to prove that you know the smartest people by joining them in a team and competing in the GELIMBO Pubquiz. However, this has always been a team effort, but now you will have the opportunity to show how knowledgeable you actually are. Can you outsmart all the other participants?

At the beginning of the show a brainteaser will decide who will be The One on the hot seat. In the spotlight, you will have to answer multiple choice questions! However, the other participants also want to be in the spotlight, so they will answer the questions via an online system before you do. As long as you keep answering the questions correctly, you will remain on the hot seat. As soon as you give an incorrect answer, another participant will take your place.

However, you want to be in the spotlight, because if you can answer the one million dollar question correctly while you are in the spotlight, you will win a prize! As there are multiple one million dollar questions, there are multiple chances for you to win a prize. After a one million dollar question, a new brainteaser will decide who will be on the hot seat for the next round! Of course, getting in the spotlight has some luck involved, so we will also give a prize to the person who answered the most questions correctly!

So subscribe right now and show that you can beat the other 111 contestants!

  • Most of you remember the Sunday of a typical GEWIS weekend. For those of you who don’t and for the rest of you that would like to reminisce about these wonderful days, I’ll describe the experience for you. You wake up with a headache. If you’re fortunate enough you get served a delightful beer in bed. Others are already awake and busy, too busy for your taste. You make your way to the general room and see the mess that others are trying to tidy up. You start remembering most of what happened the day before and you share a good laugh with your fellow students. After you’ve cleaned up what you deemed your part of the mess and have scavenged together some breakfast, you look for a car ride home and prepare for that nauseating drive.

This years Sunday experience of our Digital Decadent Weekend will be a little different. You’ll most likely, and hopefully, still wake up with a headache and memories of an amazing meal the evening before. You’ll be in your own bed a little lonely and miss the comradery to share your misery with. Fortunately, we have a solution.

The Sunday of our Digital Decadent Weekend we will stream one of the most classic TV shows of all time. Yes this is exactly what you’re thinking, dispuut “In Vino Veritas” will provide a live stream of our favorite series the Lullo’s. You are all welcomed to the GEWIS discord in which we will screen share the Lullo’s. You’ll be able to chat with your fellow hangover GEWIS members and your favorite I.V.V’ers. In this way we can all pass the time until our hangover has faded together and share a good laugh along the way.

    Saturday 15 May. 2021 17:00 - 21:30

Dear food lover, As previous participants will confirm, the Decadent Weekend is most famous for its Saturday evening. Tucked away in a foreign castle, the gentlemen of I.V.V have come together to prepare a luxurious seven-course dinner for their guests on the Saturday evening. While the guests are entertained through other means during the day, I.V.V spends all day cooking and baking the most delicious and exciting meals to surprise your tastebuds later that evening. Unfortunately, Mister Corona does not allow us to come together in a large group and enjoy a candlelit dinner. Luckily, I.V.V has been able to take the experience to your doorstep. The boys of Keuken met I.V.V will be joined by a special guest to prepare a four-course meal through a live cooking-stream, and you can even cook along! We will supply you with a box containing all the ingredients and along with the instructions of Dhr. Houthuijs and the special guest, provide you with all the means to create this four-course meal for your guests. The only thing you must do is make sure your wine cellar is stocked. Not convinced yet? Here are some spoilers on the menu.

Amuse: Parmaham-package filled with ricotta and asparagusStarter: Undisclosed I.V.V-SpecialtyMain: Herb-crusted Lamb-Rack with roast potato and caramelised vegetablesDessert: Avocado-Chocolate Mousse with fresh fruit

Unlike previews editions of Keuken met I.V.V this edition will be in English! You can join in groups of 2 or 4, as the corona-measures are still unsure. • Dear GEWIS Members,

The weekend of the year is upon us. A weekend that is normally dictated by an appropriate degree of decadence, improbable forms of entertainment and, of course, abundant wine consumption makes its resurrection this year, albeit in an alternative form. Dispuut "In Vino Veritas" is once again ready to organize a Digitally Decadent Weekend for you all.

The usual road of life towards an exquisite castle has to make way this year for the easy way to the digital meeting. However, do not let this stop you from participating in this series of events, because the quality of the entertainment will not suffer! Where you normally are sent out on the Saturday afternoon of a Decadent Weekend to give Hèt Dispuut time and space to prepare a wonderful dinner for you in the kitchen, this time you will have the opportunity to take a look into the proverbial kitchen of Dispuut "In Vino Veritas".

With great pride and pleasure we present the Open General Digital Dispuutsmeeting (OADDM). During the afternoon, you will have the opportunity to join an online meeting filled with the usual serious decisions, loud roars, "jajajas" and vin. Liters of vin. Attention! The fermented grape juice for this occasion will have to be purchased by yourself. It is also advisable to provide yourself with an abundance of decadent snacks of quality. If you have succeeded in this, all that remains is to dial in digitally via the GEWIScordserver. The OADDM will start at 13:00 on Saturday, May 15.

    See you then!

With jovial regards,Bouke BosmaPraeses of Dispuut "In Vino Veritas".

    P.S.: Don't forget to drink!

  • Imagine a world after the lockdown. You are once again able to visit the cinemas and restaurants and you’re having a reunion with your friends. You have decided to go to dinner in a high class establishment using the money you have saved during the lockdown. Naturally you decide to order a bottle of wine, but then it hits you. You’re looking at the wine menu and you can’t tell the temperanillo and chenin blanc apart. You don’t even know which one is red or white.

The above scenario should be prevented at all costs. Fortunately, dispuut “In Vino Veritas” is there to help you out. We offer you the opportunity to keep your knowledge on par, refresh your memory or gain a better understanding of wine by means of an online wine tasting experience. Under the guidance of our more than capable Vinoloog der dispuut “In Vino Veritas” Mgr. Sanders you will be able to taste an x-amount of delicious wines. When the evening ends you’ll know almost everything there is to know about these wines and you’ll have the confidence to order the right wine during your future dinners.

In order to let this activity be a success in these unsure times we are prepared for two scenarios. The first scenario which is the one we are hoping for, is that you will be allowed to gather in groups of four. In this scenario each group will receive a wine tasting kit consisting of six half bottles of wine.

In the scenario that we are only allowed to gather in groups of two we will provide a separate white and red wine tasting kit. Both kits will contain three half bottles of wine. You are allowed to order both kits but this also comes at double the cost.

Regardless of the sizes of the groups we wouldn’t dare serving you wine without also serving a few delicacies to prime your taste buds. The wine tasting kits will have to be picked up at a to be disclosed date and location a few days prior to the activity. The costs for this online wine tasting experience will be €5,- per person. A group of four will have to pay a total of €20,- and a group of two would be a total of €10,-. In order to be able to welcome as many first years as possible we have arranged for a €1,- discount for all first years taking part in this activity.

In case the explanation above might not have convinced you entirely, there is also the opportunity to win a prize. The group that is best able to absorb the wisdom Mgr. Sanders will share during the activity and thus is best able to answer his questions about the wines, will win this prize. What this prize is will remain a secret for a little while longer but I can assure you, it would be an honor.

We hope to welcome all of you at our online wine tasting experience especially as this activity will also mark the opening of our Digital Decadent Weekend.

Note that there is a maximum of 80 participants. Note that if you have subscribed with two people you have to mention your choice of wine (white or red). There is a 50-50 ratio of red and white wines, so first come first serve!

  • I.V.V Digital Decadent Weekend

    Fri. 14 May. 2021 (19:00) - Sun. 16 May. 2021 (12:00)

The past year has been marked with disappointment and discontinued activities. We of dispuut “In Vino Veritas” have experienced this ourselves as well. Nevertheless we have found a way to overcome these obstacles. Similarly, I am sure all of us will overcome these troubling times as well. We are proud to inform you that we have found a way to deliver the entire experience of our famed Decadent Weekend to the comfort of your own home. We would like to announce, and are doing so in this piece of writing, our first Digital Decadent Weekend.

Anyone who has ever partaken in our Decadent Weekend can agree that the wine should always be plentiful and of supreme quality. In order to satisfy this need we mark the opening of our Digital Decadent Weekend by means of our Online Winetasting activity. Our very own renowned Vinoloog der dispuut “In Vino Veritas” Mgr. Sanders will guide you through the experience of properly tasting wine. He will not only dispense his wisdom, he will also test your ability absorb this information and put it into practice. The group that can answer Mgr. Sanders’ questions about these wines the best, will win a prize that is an absolute honor to receive.

During previous editions of our Decadent Weekend we have always provided entertainment during the Saturday afternoon while the main force of I.V.V prepares an outstanding dinner. This edition of our Digital Decadent Weekend will be no different. In case you have ever wondered what it would be like to be a member of dispuut “In Vino Veritas” we offer you a glimpse of this experience. Rather, we offer you the opportunity to experience what it would be like to be a spectator at one of our assemblies. We will hold an Online Open General Fraternity Assembly. Any GEWIS member is invited to listen to us discuss the finer and more important things in life and perhaps pitch in on a few of the subjects.

As per usual the Saturday evening will entirely revolve around one of the most exquisite diners of the year. You have all had the chance to take part in one of our Keuken met I.V.V streams. During this weekend we will take this concept to the next level. We offer the opportunity to take a peak into the kitchen of dispuut “In Vino Veritas” as we prepare a dinner worthy of a Digital Decadent Weekend. Not only will you be able to behold the expertise of our chefs, we also provide the necessary ingredients and instructions for anyone to cook along with us. This can only be described as the opportunity of a lifetime to take your cooking close to the level of dispuut “In Vino Veritas”.

After all this greatness and the accompanying amounts of wine, we understand that everyone needs a moment to wind down. No need to fret, we have prepared for this as well. The Sunday morning is usually marked by a hangover, cleaning, scavenging for breakfast and preparing for the ride home. The highlight of the morning is often being able to share the misery of your hangover and reminisce about the previous few days. We deem the latter important. Therefore we will setup a livestream of one of our favorite TV shows, de Lullo’s. Anyone is invited to join us in the GEWIS discord and watch one of our favorite series together with us and pass the time until our hangovers have passed.

In order to join us on this weekend filled with decadency, wine and good company you can subscribe to any and all of the activities described above on the GEWIS website.

  • Pretty Good Picture Challenge

    Mon. 10 May. 2021 (12:00) - Sat. 5 Jun. 2021 (23:00)

Now that we find ourselves in the year 2021, it is more essential than ever to know your way around with a camera. Do you have what it takes to be a pretty good photographer?

During the first four weeks of the last quartile (May 10th – June 5th ), those who subscribe for this challenge will weekly compete to take the best picture of them all. Each week, there is a unique theme for which the best picture has to be taken. Everyone sends in 1 picture and will receive a set amount of points based upon the votes of other people per theme. In this way there are weekly winners and there is a winner over all weeks.

A small prize for each week’s winner and one big prize for the general champion at the end will be distributed after the grand finale. Note that subscriptions are for teams of 1 (solo, that is), but you are allowed to work together to create a cool picture. Is it not convenient to be busy with this challenge for the full 4 weeks? Not a problem! You can also participate for one week and try to win that specific challenge!

We do not expect a perfect picture, we just hope that they will be pretty good!More information on the competition will be provided by our Instagram account (@pretty.good.picture) and or via mail once subscribed. There is a maximum number of participants, which is 100, and we hope you are one of them!

TL;DR: Interested in a study trip in the summer of 2022/2023? Subscribe! Hey there! Every 2 years a group of GEWIS members go on an amazing studytrip during the summer holidays. These trips are organized by a committee of GEWIS members, along the way SSG (Stichting Studiereizen GEWIS) is there to help them. On the trip you'll go to some foreign companies, universities and of course have a bunch of fun abroad! With corona still not fully under control we are looking into the possibility of setting up a new travel committee if enough people are interested in going on a super cool study trip in the summer vacation of 2022. Looking at the current situation in the world the study trip would probably be a bit closer at home (think Europe) than the previous two (South Africa & Brazil). For the people that are not only interested in going on a study trip but would also love to organize it you can tick the box below! We'll contact those people by mail for an info lunch. Please note that this is only an opportunity to learn more and you aren't bound to anything when signing up! Do not hesitate to contact ssg@gewis.nl if you have anymore questions.

With the help of the SNiC advisory organ you will organize a symposium for around 700 students from all over the country. You will have contact with lots of interesting speakers and companies. Or you will make sure the conference room suits perfectly for the keynotes and everyone has a delicious lunch and dinner. If you are interested in doing this or would like more information, please send a mail to snicboard@gewis.nl!

If you're still a bit unsure or would like more information we've set-up an info session to help you decide. Subscribe below!

  • BAC Blind Beer Tasting

    Thursday 15 Apr. 2021 16:30 - 21:00

In these weary times of lockdown there are lots of things to be missed: think of parties, festivals and concerts. However, if you are a true GEWIS’er, chances are that you miss the Thursday borrels most of all. So does the BAC. In fact, no one misses the borrels more than the BAC! Since it’s hard for us to organise activities these days, we are afraid that you forgot who we are, or even worse, that you might not even know us yet. Therefore, we came up with something that is similar to the regular borrel experience, where you also get to know us (once again): an evening filled with beer, some snacks and (you’ll have to find this yourself) good company. We made a selection of 8 very diverse special beers, which you can drink together with a friend! There is a twist: we will remove the labels of the beers, so you can test your beer tasting skills, and see if you recognise which beer you are drinking. We will also provide some trademark borrel snacks for you to go along with the beers! Don’t worry about this being a contest, if you participate you are automatically a winner (after all, drinking is winning and winning is drinking!), we will, however, provide a form in which you can check how many beers you did recognise. Each beer package is meant for 2 persons. So find a friend with just as much love for beer as you, and subscribe now! Note that there are only 48 packages, and the subscription deadline is Thursday the 8th of April! Late subscriptions can not be accomodated. There will not be a draw.

Note2: You will need to pick up the beer package between Monday 12th en Thursday 15th of April. You can come by GEWIS to pick it up between 10:00 and 16:00, but to make sure that GEWIS is open, you will have to reach out to the board beforehand via whatsapp: 040-2472815

  • GEFLITST Gebruikt DSLR's Photo-Street

    Friday 26 Mar. 2021 10:00 - 15:00

Do you know that feeling when you are looking at your own photos on the GEWIS website, that the photos of the Carnavalsborrel of one year ago are almost at the top? Or the feeling that you have no good GEWIS profile pictures anymore? Or that you are stuck in your room and want to do something else? We too! Luckily, GEFLITST is here to help. "Normally" we would already have organized two photobooths already, but this year we have done 0. Therefore we organize an outdoor drive-in photobooth on the 26th of March in the Karpendonkse Plas! It is very simple: you sign up on the GEWIS website and choose a timeslot in the Doodle to have a picture taken with your buddy. At home, you look for some fun attributes, put them in your bag, take them with you to the Karpendonkse Plas and get a photo taken with them (and your buddy of course)! Then, GEFLITST will old skool edit these photos and publish them on the GEWIS website. Now you will finally have a nice picture for your profile again, and you have been outside for once. The photographers will keep a distance and adhere to the current corona measures during the activity. Make sure you do not arrive too early before your timeslot, and do not stay too long afterwards. With (very) bad weather, the activity will be cancelled. The exact location of the photobooth will be sent to by email the Thursday evening before the activity, so do not forget to subscribe on the GEWIS website. See you then! The Doodle can be found here, after you have subscribed on the GEWIS website with your buddy.

  • TU/e Murder Mystery

    Thursday 25 Mar. 2021 18:00 - 22:00

Picture this - you're going on about your day, attending lectures, doing assignments, when suddenly you receive a shocking piece of news. One of the TU/e professors of computer science and mathematics has been found dead. You've been working for a while and are due for a break, so in the spirit of procrastination (I mean academic honor and justice), you decide to go investigate. After all, who could possibly crack the case if not the logic-driven, algorithmically thinking members of GEWIS?

Get a group of friends together (3-6 people) and come join us for an exciting night of riddles and mystery. No friends? No problem! Sign up anyway and we will assign you to a team to play with and meet some cool new people in the process. After that, all you have to do is join the Discord server where the Meerkats' narrators will guide you through the story. You will work as a group to make decisions about your actions as you put together the puzzle to find out how and why the professor was killed.

Clear your schedule for the 25th of March and come investigate this murder with us. We hope to see you there :)

  • Lunch Lecture Anago

    Thursday 25 Mar. 2021 12:40 - 13:20

Project TITAN - An In-Memory High Performance Calculation Engine Anago is a Dutch software company founded in 1999 and is specialised in smart planning solutions. We have developed our own no-code development environment for modelling planning applications. We work for large organisations such as AirFrance KLM, Heineken, UWV, IND and the Ministry of Social Affairs. Examples of planning systems are the long-term planning of a customer contact centre, the scheduling of engine services at KLM and the planning of the asylum seekers chain. Anago Planning applications are modelled using high level building blocks such as data cubes, calculation engines, integrations and views. The result of the application model is a fully working cloud solution. Typically, the planning calculations involve mathematics such as aggregation and allocation, statistical forecasting, various optimisation algorithms and a free model language. Currently, Anago is relying on a multi-dimensional database system that is becoming a bottleneck. We want to replace this technology by developing a new In-Memory High Performance Calculation Engine. The new calculation should support the following: - Automatic Parallel (multithreaded) calculations

Sparse data handlingEfficient Matrix calculationsLazy (on the fly) calculationsLanguage parsing and compiling

We are researching the best ways of handling these challenges. During the lunch lecture we want to introduce you to our world of developing a modelling environment such as Anago and the concepts behind our In-Memory calculation engine. You will learn how a low-code or no-code platform is set up and can be used to create state-of-the-art cloud solutions. The lecture will be given by Fraser Wilson, Software Architect at Anago and Thomas de Nooij, Founder of Anago. Note that we can not guarantee at this moment that we can host this lecture on campus. For the on campus lecture that are only 30 spots available, for which a draw will be held. If you would like to attend on campus, please subscribe Thursday before the lecture takes place.

  • GEWIS Bylaws brainstorm

    Friday 19 Mar. 2021 12:40 - 13:20

As announced during the previous GMM, we need to prepare one more statutory change before going to a notary. This is due to the new Wet Toezicht en Bestuur Rechtspersonen ('WBTR'), which came into effect in January.

For this new law, we need to make only one small change. This brainstorm is organized to discuss this change. During the brainstorm, we will look for an answer to the question: Who should run the association GEWIS, when the whole board is no longer able to? This is both in the case of dismissal by the GMM, as well as unforseen circumstances (e.g. illness).

In the previous GMM, the board said they were planning to create a GM Taskforce for this. However, due to the small size of this change, the board decided to organize a brainstorm instead.

So join the meeting and share your idea's! We'll see you then!

  • FESTIVITEIT Saint Patrick's day borrel

    Wednesday 17 Mar. 2021 19:00 - 23:59

It’s winter, and despite the mild temperatures the past days, it is still quite barren outside. We, for one, quite miss the colourful flowers and bright green leaves. Luckily we have found the perfect way to bring some green back in your lives: we are going to celebrate Saint Patrick’s day!

Saint Patrick’s day is celebrated on the 17th of March, and while the holiday didn’t start out that way, drinking alcohol has become an integral part of the celebration. Therefore we want to invite you all to a Saint Patrick’s day borrel! We have built a beautiful replica of GEWIS for this borrel (see our Instagram for a preview) which will be used in combination with proximity chat to replicate the feeling of being back at GEWIS.

Of course a borrel is not complete without a borrel card, so we made one for you! It includes four Irish craft beers, and it costs 8 euros. After the subscription deadline has passed, you will get an email about where and when (probably March 16/17) you can pick up your drinks.

During the borrel, there will be some (drinking) games, but you can also just chat with your friends while enjoying some Irish beer.

    See you then!

  • GIT Training - Beginner

    Tuesday 16 Mar. 2021 19:30 - 20:30

Working on a project mostly means writing code, and working on a project in a team means sharing code, which often goes wrong if you send your code via a text file by email. Luckily for us a solution to this problem already exists; the code sharing language GIT. GIT makes coding together a lot easier! Learn how to use GIT at the GitHub beginner training from TRAIN. This training is aimed at students that have no (or little) experience with code sharing platforms, and who would like to learn how to effectively work on code together with their fellow students, at the same time.

We will be using GitHub desktop to explore the basics of GIT during the training. During the training you will learn the following skills:

Creating and sharing a repositoryPulling and pushing codeCreating and merging branches

The training takes places online from 19:30 until 20:30 and you will be able to ask further questions until 21:00. The training will be provided by trainer Gert Jan Timmerman from Info Support. Are you interested to hear more about Info Support as a company? Then let us know via the subscription on the GEWIS website.

Are there specific things you would like to learn? Send them in via train@gewis.nl!

  • Keuken with I.V.V

    Friday 12 Mar. 2021 17:00 - 20:30

This year has known a tough start. There seems to be no difference between one day and the next. Friends seem further away than ever and all time seems to consist of is working, eating and sleeping.

The members of I.V.V have recognized this problem and are here with a solution: a sequel to the widely famous and beloved Keuken with I.V.V! Not only will you get a full night (which only last until 20:30 these days, sadly) of excitement and entertainment, but we will help you broaden your taste palette with some heartwarming new dishes!

The theme of this episode will be of a somewhat religious nature: Easter! As Jesus rises from his grave during this holiday, so will Keuken with I.V.V be resurrected on Friday the 12th of March, 2021.

The chosen delicacies for this episode also feature an Easter-related theme: rabbit will be the meat of choice. With this rather special animal we will cook three types of dishes: a professionally prepared pasta, a special Lord of the Rings-inspired stupendously satisfying stew, and finally a remarkably rich roasted rabbit.

If you, alone or in a group of up to 3 people, wish to cook along with any of these recipes, you have the option to get the rabbit and most of the key ingredients delivered to your home. Please subscribe on the GEWIS website and indicate which recipe you want to cook for how many GEWIS members. If you wish to cook this with/for non-GEWIS members, please contact us separately, because this will include additional costs. The costs for a GEWIS member are 7 euros. If many people join and money is left over, participants will get some of this money back, depending on the surplus.

Only 15 groups can participate, so be sure to subscribe quickly before the spots run out! Because we need to order the rabbit quite early, the subscription list already closes on Sunday March 7, at 23:59.

We hope to see you in chat on twitch.tv/hetdispuut on Friday March 12 at 17:00!

  • Online Werewolves by FYS

    Thursday 11 Mar. 2021 20:00 - 22:00

These days, all we do is dream of going outside freely. Well, guess what! FYS is now organizing an online activity involving exactly this; dreaming of living in a fictional pandemic-free world.

Although there might not be such a thing as COVID-19, this fictional world is haunted by werewolves. The game itself goes by many names and the chance is slim you have yet to encounter some form of it. Some may know it as “Town of Salem”, although most people who grew up in the Netherlands will have it ingrained as “Weerwolven van Wakkerdam”. On the dreary evening of Thursday March the 11th we will try to get rid of these werewolves once and for all. The game will be set-up on the GEWIScord and we as FYS will guide you all through the process.

Please note that in this activity interaction and conviction are key, so having a working camera really helps. Hence make sure you camera is working and you can look the wolves into their eyes during the daytime.

Undoubtedly, it will be a fun evening and we hope to see you there!

    Tuesday 2 Mar. 2021 12:40 - 13:20

Kickstarting Your Azure Pipeline with Templates

Wouter Ligtenberg, a GEWIS alumnus, will talk on behalf of ING!

Azure pipeline templates are a powerful way of scaling your CI/CD pipelines throughout your organization. When combining it with software engineering practices it becomes a powerful tool in speeding up the build and release work done by DevOps teams.

Templates facilitate the creation of scalable, parameterized pipelines that can be unit tested and ensure pipeline immutability while remaining a consistent and transparent single source of truth.

The ING DevOps engineering team has created a way to build and deploy JVM applications in the cloud to be consumed by multiple teams from the entire tribe and more by using templates developed in Azure DevOps with the goal to automate a pipeline end to end, from code to runtime.

To achieve this, they wrote code to automate everything and also created a system to manage these pipelines. Some other objectives they set for themselves were:

maintenance of the pipeline must be lowthe pipeline must have a versioning in place as to not break consumers pipelines when we update itit must be flexible, for different languages and applicationsany of their colleagues should be able to contribute, using an open source model

    In this talk, you'll learn:

How Azure pipeline templates can scale your CI/CD pipelines organization-wideHow Azure pipeline templates can help speed up your DevOps team's build and release cycleHow ING are utilizing and managing their DevOps pipelines

  • You can enroll for the masterclass here!

The world is confronted with the coronavirus for over a year. In response, we faced measures that drastically curtail our freedoms for months. The consequences are noticeable in many areas. Last but not least, the effects of this put pressure on our (psychological) well-being. You may also recognize this. For example, you can suffer from feelings of loneliness, less (study) motivation, and concentration. Perhaps you are worried about your health or that of others, and you are sleeping less well, feel uncertain about the (near) future, worried about your studies, or experience feelings of sadness and tension.

If you recognize these kinds of feelings, Pattern, GEWIS and the academic advisors encourage you to attend the Masterclass "Support your Well-being in times of Covid-19"! This masterclass examines insights, strategies, and tips that can help you support your well-being during this exceptional situation with which we all are being confronted.

The masterclass is online and is offered twice for M&CS-students. You can register yourself via this form; you will receive a link via email to join shortly before the masterclass. Please also let us know via the registration form if you would like to attend a masterclass, but you are not available on the offered timeslots.

    Tuesday 23 Feb. 2021 12:40 - 13:20

Compilers are often seen as black boxes which perform magic. For his graduation-project at Prodrive, “Compiling Motion Control Algorithms for Domain Specific Computer Architectures”, Simon is developing a compiler using LLVM. He will take you on a tour through the scary world of compilers. In the end you may find that, even though compilers are complex, they also do a lot of cute stuff like subgraph isomorphism and graph coloring. If you end up writing your own compiler at home, no worries, that is normal behavior.Curious for more? Then register yourself for the GEWIS lunch lecture on February 23nd 2021.

Note that we can not guarantee at this moment that we can host this lecture on campus. For the on campus lecture that are only 30 spots available, for which a draw will be held. If you would like to attend on campus, please subscribe Thursday before the lecture takes place.

  • This workshop will be in Dutch

**What is the role of Achmea - the largest insurance company in the Netherlands - in the fight against loneliness among young people?

An elderly person living in a nursing home behind a window. The stereotypical image that often comes to mind when talking about loneliness. Experts are sounding the alarm, however: it is precisely many young people who are feeling lonely more and more frequently: almost 10% of young people feel chronically lonely! The loneliness virus is even deadly; it is as harmful as obesity and comparable to the harmfulness of smoking.

During the corona crisis, loneliness among young people has become even more visible. Perhaps you ever feel lonely or knew someone close to you who feels lonely? As Achmea, we want to help in the fight against loneliness among young people and adapt our services accordingly. We challenge you to help us and experience how you can make a real impact from an organization that is at the heart of society. Are you interested in IT, are you a creative thinker and would you like to brainstorm with us about how an IT solution can reduce loneliness among young people? Then we would like to see you at our workshop!

  • GELIMBAKING (Vegan) Worstenbroodjes

    Saturday 13 Feb. 2021 14:11 - 16:41

    Dear members,

During a week (or a long weekend) of celebrating carnival having a snack once in a while is almost obligatory. You can of course enjoy a ‘kapsalon’ or a ‘broodje bal’, but one of the most (in)famous snacks is a ‘worstenbroodje’ (not to be confused with a ‘frikandelbroodje’). Literally translated to ‘sausage bread’, it’s exactly what you expect and now you have the change to make these yourselves!

On Saturday the 13th of February, GELIMBO hosts an online baking workshop with expert cooks to guide you through the process. All you have to do are the groceries, for which we will provide a shopping list. There will also be a vega(n) alternative available. The activity starts at 14:11, so you’ll have plenty of time to recover from an optional hangover. We hope to see all of you on the 13th!

The workshop will be held in the GEWIScord.

Ingredient list for 8 worstenbroodjes with meatIngredient list for 12 vegan worstenbroodjesIf you are on a vegetarian diet, you can also decide to make the dough from the first recipe (contains milk) and make the filling with the ingredients from the second recipe. • GEBINGO Online Borrel

    Thursday 11 Feb. 2021 20:11 - 22:00

    Dear members,

In times without lockdown and COVID, the 11th of February 2021 would have been the day where we kick off the carnival week with an amazing borrel. This year, there will be no carnival unfortunately. But do not worry, GELIMBO will not pass on the opportunity to celebrate something on the 11th of the month. We will not kick off the carnival week, but we will kick off our four days of fun activities. And what better way to do this than with an (online) borrel? To give you something more to do than just borrel from home, we will also include a BINGO (or actually we will be playing kien, like Limburgians do), where you can win fun prizes!

Once you subscribe for the activity, you will get an email with your kien-card and an optional shopping list with some things that our hosts will be consuming during the evening, so you can join them if you want! We also encourage you to make the experience more fun for yourself, for example by putting shots on a few numbers on your card ;) and by meeting with your friends in a seperate Discord call.

One last important thing:Even though we do not celebrate carnival, we will not let 2021 go by without dressing up. So put on your craziest carnival outfit! You will actually get an extra kien-card if you do this! :)

    Southern hugs,GELIMBO

    Thursday 28 Jan. 2021 12:30 - 14:00

At the previous GMM (GMM178 at 07-12-2020), the board presented a proposal regarding a revision of the GEWIS Membership types. Revising and updating the membership types is one of the multi-annual strategic vision goals of GEWIS. We have gained a lot of feedback at this GMM, which will all be implemented soon.

The goal of this meeting is to have a critical look at the updated document and to make it as watertight as possible. During the meeting we will also discuss the following steps to take regarding implementing it. Because these changes will be rather impactful, it is important that everyone's voice will be heard. Every member of GEWIS is therefore invited to join this meeting to give their opinion on the proposal, so we can finalize it at the upcoming GMM.

    Mon. 4 Jan. 2021 (12:00) - Sun. 10 Jan. 2021 (23:59)

The last two weeks we have been playing Minecraft constantly, so it is time for something new. Luckily, a new week has started, which means that it is time for a new game in the GEWIS Arcade! This week, we will be playing Garry's Mod! Garry's Mod is a sandbox game in which the community builds their own games. Many, many, many gamemodes exist, but to keep things light and easy, we are going to play the legendary Prop Hunt (some form of Hide and Seek) and Trouble In Terrorist Town (Among Us, The Werewolves of Millers Hollow, etc)! These games are really fun to play with friends, so make sure you use the GEWIScord Discord server well! Unfortunately, Garry's Mod is not free, but luckily it is not expensive either. You can buy and download the game from Steam on this page. To join the game, simply visit arcade.gewis.nl and follow the instructions there. If you have any questions or suggestions about this game or for the upcoming weeks, feel free to contact Koen, Wouter or Roy from the board. We hope to see you all there!

  • GEWIS Arcade - Minecraft

    Fri. 18 Dec. 2020 (13:00) - Sun. 3 Jan. 2021 (23:59)

Now that we are all sitting at home during the Christmas break, boredom is always around the corner. Luckily, the GEWIS Arcade is still running in all its glory! Therefore, the board announces the next GEWIS Arcade game for the entirety of the Christmas break: Minecraft!

We assume everyone already knows the game. If you don't, you have been living under a rock. But we are not the worst, so let us quickly explain the game. Minecraft is a sandbox video game in which your imagination is the limit. Explore the world, build the most amazing things and interact with all the other players on the server! With more than 200,000,000 copies sold, it is the best-selling video game of all time.

We are running a "normal" survival server on the Hard difficulty. This means that the game is easily accessible for everyone (e.g. no mods) and everyone has the freedom to play the game in their own way! We also installed some datapacks to create that little bit of extra fun. We won't spoil what it is, so you will have to find out yourself.

To play on the GEWIS Arcade Minecraft server, you need to have bought the game (aka cracked versions will not work, shame on you!). To join the server, simply add arcade.gewis.nl to your server list and join the server! To join the server however, you have to be whitelisted. You can whitelist yourself by going to arcade.gewis.nl.

If you have any questions or suggestions about this game or for the upcoming weeks, feel free to contact Koen, Wouter or Roy from the board. We hope to see you all there!

  • "Brrrr! The weather is nothing to write home about during these times of the year. I wouldn't want to think about having a social drink outside in this weather. No amount of mulled wine can heat me enough to overcome this coolness!" Are these the thoughts that you, quite rightly, are also having just like us? Then there is some great news for you!

In this time of cold weather, of course, the only thing one desires is to gather around a fireplace with balls in the tree. Unfortunately, this is also prevented by the measures taken to keep us safe from the big C. Fortunately, these are not the only balls that come out to warm you, because the balls of I.V.V are very busy preparing a new Keuken with I.V.V!

This time it will be a true Christmas edition of the already successful concept. If you are not yet familiar with this, it's as follows: you will open the website https://www.twitch.tv/hetdispuut on Wednesday December 16th at 5 o'clock and there Hèt Dispuut will make a delicious meal in clear and slow steps that can be followed live at home in your own kitchen. This edition a special Christmas dinner will be made to positively surprise your friends and family a week later with the unexpected arts that we will demonstrate to you. The exact list of ingredients for the lamb rack that will be made, including side dishes, will be on the GEWIS website next Monday at the latest.

In case you are so warmed up by this prospect and can't wait until next Wednesday, we have a sneak preview for you of the various hilarities that happened in the previous stream. Enjoy! But enjoy (online) with buddies! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zneMX6t_Vfc

    ADDITION:Dear Cooking Enthusiasts,

It's like summer around this Christmas. No, not really, but what we do have in common with Australia is that the world is upside down right now. And it's also quite warm for the time of year, so we don't have to expect a white Christmas either, unless you mistakenly bought powdered sugar and/or flour for the Keuken session, because they are not going to be used.Anyway, I'm wandering off, the world is upside down. Our great friend in "Het Torentje", Mr. Rutte, gave a speech earlier this evening in which he told the country that, among other things, we are no longer allowed to travel far and in which it was also told that the capacity for the number of people that a person is allowed to have visit their home is decreasing from three to two, along with the urgent advice not to visit at all.Being the good guys that Dispuut "In Vino Veritas" is means that we will not ignore the advices of our faithful right-wing friend. They often say that all good things come to an end, so now to me the nice announcement that Keuken with I.V.V part III: Christmas edition will end a lot later than expected. Unfortunately it will also start a lot later than expected, since Hèt Dispuut does not see any possibility to carry out the activity in such a way that the measures, we are going on a culinary journey after all, will be respected and the quality of the spectacle that it is, of course, guaranteed will remain. However, I will have to give you a follow-up date for this banging activity in the future, as it is also entirely dependent on measures to be taken in the near future. But remember: after the rain comes sunshine again. And to let that sunshine shine in your face for a while, you can always click one of the following links. After all, the following also holds for the previous two sessions: luckily we still have the images!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CuSnOuGZLlMhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zneMX6t_Vfc

Lots of viewing pleasure and farewell! On behalf of Dispuut "In Vino Veritas",Bouke BosmaPraeses der Dispuut "In Vino Veritas"

  • FESTIVITEIT Create your own Christmas cards

    Tuesday 15 Dec. 2020 18:30 - 21:30

TL;DR: subscribe and receive a Christmas-card-making-kit for free! Christmas card making session December 15.

The days are getting colder, the nights longer… ‘T is the season of Christmas lights, hot cocoa, and “gezelligheid”. But how to spread the gezelligheid when you can’t really get together?

Without the big social gatherings of for example cosy Christmas markets, it may be difficult for some people to get into the Christmas mood. Luckily, one way of spreading the Christmas spirit remains, no matter how big the social distance: sending Christmas cards!

Therefore, we decided to compose special Christmas kits to help you spread some Christmas spirit. Each kit will contain two blank cards (1 red and 1 green), 2 matching envelopes, and all the glittery red-green-gold stuff you might need to create two beautiful Christmas cards. (NB: it does not contain glue. If you don’t have any glue and are too poor to buy some, we suggest using a sticky alternative like peanut butter, jam, or any left-over (GEWIS) stickers.)

You can receive one of these kits for free. There are two ways to receive a kit:

Delivery (free inside Eindhoven, for addresses outside Eindhoven you’ll have to pay for the shipping).

Picking them up somewhere in Eindhoven.

After the subscription deadline, we will send you an email with the details regarding the delivery or pick-up.If you choose delivery, a kit will be delivered to your home before December 15. On December 15th, we will get together in the GEWIS Discord to add some gezelligheid to the creative process.

    See you then!FESTIVITEIT

  • Celebrate Purple Friday with Défi

    Friday 11 Dec. 2020 12:30 - 13:30

    💜💜💜

    Dear members,

Every year on the second Friday of December the whole world turns purple. Do you know why? It's Spirit day, also known as purple Friday. This day is annual LGBTQ+ awareness day. To this day people from the LQBTQ+ community still have to deal with bullying and violence and suicide is way more common in this community. To let everyone know that this is not okay and that we support the LGBTQ+ community we celebrate purple Friday.

This year on the 11th of December, Défi will make sure the GEWIS room is decorated accordingly. If you are at the TU/e already, you may want to drop by GEWIS during the break and get a little snack. We are handing out a little snack to every member wearing purple (if the room capacity allows it!).

Furthermore we will have a small online competition, in which we ask everyone to share their Purple Friday celebration with Défi. We will post about this on our Instagram and we will announce the winners there as well. You can send a picture of your Purple Friday celebration to defi@gewis.nl or tag @dispuutdefi on Instagram.

Please join Défi in dressing purple to show your support for the LGTBQ+ community!

We wish you a very purple Friday!

  • Get To Know First Year's Online Borrel

    Friday 27 Nov. 2020 19:00 - 23:59

    Hey everyone!

As most of you may know, GEWIS has a lot of new involved first year students. Understandably so, it's quite hard to get to know people face to face these days. FYS hopes to give GEWIS the opportunity to get to know our new first year students and vice versa.

As borrels have not been able to take place in the last few weeks, we're all looking for social interaction, online if need be! Come say hi if you have time! We start at 19:00 and end whenever the last person leaves.

The hangout will take place online on the 27th of November in the GEWIScord, channels for the activity can be found in the Activities category. All participants will be emailed a link to join the GEWIScord, alternatively you can just ask a board member to add you. What and if you drink is of course entirely up to you!

Subscribing to this activity if you want to be present is optional if you're already a GEWIScord member. Just drop by when it suits you.

We hope to see you there!

  • AC Duo Chesspionship

    Tue. 24 Nov. 2020 (20:00) - Thu. 17 Dec. 2020 (20:00)

Has this partial lockdown made you feel like you're a queen stuck in a castle? Worry no more, because on the 24th of November the AC will start a three-week-long Duo Chess tournament! You will be playing hand and brain chess, so find yourself a chess mate with who you can check mate. The rules in a nutshell: The “brain” calls out a piece (let’s say a pawn) and the “hand” has to decide which pawn to move and where. Of course we will cater to the ROOKies as well as the chess kings, since you have to fill in how much experience you have as a duo (fill in beginner if you do not know much more than the rules or do not play often). You will have to schedule most of the matches yourself, but we will lend a helping hand with planning. Will you deliver checkmate, or is it (k)night (k)night for you? Only one way to find out! If you want to beat your friends, subscribing is the winning strategy! If you have any questions, suggestions, or need to get something off your chesst, you can always contACt us at ac@gewis.nl. Hugs, the AC

    Mon. 16 Nov. 2020 (18:00) - Tue. 17 Nov. 2020 (00:00)

Once again GEWPNAGE is gearing up to get you acquainted with one of our favorite games: Magic the Gathering: Arena! Normally, we would be hosting the event in real life and provide all newcomers with real decks that they get to take home, but that's not in the cards this time. Instead, we'll use the on-line version which has all the same cards, but digital! All you need to do to join is download and install the game beforehand. You can play the tutorial to unlock decks before or during the start of our event. At around 19:00, we will start a tournament for all attendees. During the entire event, you can hang out with us on Discord, where you can chat with your opponents and ask experienced players about tactics and rules. Subscribe and join the discord using the links above, and don't forget to show up! See you there! Ktnxbai, GEPWNAGE

  • I.V.V Wine tasting

    Monday 19 Oct. 2020 16:30 - 19:00

    Dear members of GEWIS,

As you have probably noticed, the days are getting colder and shorter, making the atmosphere cosier than it has been in a long time. Sadly, it is not allowed anymore to invite over some friends at your own home due to the measures that have been laid upon us by the government. Think of that what you want, but the second wave of COVID-19 is preventing us from social interaction with each other more than we like.Luckily, there is a solution to all this. Fraternity "In Vino Veritas" will not only organise an evening activity full of the decadency and cosiness that you are used to, but will also give you the chance to train your taste buds by letting waves of different high-quality, professionally selected wines roll over your tongue. In addition, Mgr. Sanders, whom is in possession of a certificate in wine tasting, will be present at the event which will take place on October 19th to give you a master class in the art of tasting.Subscribing can be done here. Make sure to be quick, since there are only a limited number of spots available. Mind that the subscription list will be closed one week before the activity (Monday October 12th) to guarantee a fitting amount of quality wine for everyone.

We hope to see you all there!

IOTA, the better version of Blockchain and the Ledger of Everything!

In 2009, Bitcoin released its blockchain infrastructure and promised to become a global decentralized system that could be used by anyone without the need for intermediaries. Now, more than 10 years later it has become apparent (high fee’s, slow transaction times and poor scalability) that blockchains mathematical model isn’t suited to become a worldwide payment system.

However, the next generation of Distributed Ledger Technology is now here and it’s called IOTA! This protocol is designed from the ground up to power the Machine economy through feeless micro-transactions and data integrity utilizing a mathematical principle, called Directed-Acyclic-Graph (DAG). It is this concept that allows IOTA to outperform blockchain in every way and established a network dubbed the ‘‘Tangle’’ It is expected that this technology will become the very backbone for the Internet of Things and power the internet of tomorrow! Curious how this works? Come and listen to the presentation!

Note that for this lunch lecture that are only 30 spots available. We kindly ask you to be subscribed Thursday before the lecture. If there are more than 30 people interested, there will be a draw. You will be informed about your participation, the lecture and all corona measures Friday before the lecture takes place.

Every team is asked to design and create a segment of the machine. Your segment should fill roughly ten to thirty seconds of video. Each segment will have a fixed start- and endpoint, for which materials will be provided. You will receive an email for scheduling the pick-up of these materials. • Lunch Lecture Optiver

    Tuesday 29 Sep. 2020 12:40 - 13:20

Trading options as a market maker

In this interactive lecture we will take look at the role of market makers and the value of options in the financial landscape.

Market makers provide liquidity to financial markets by simultaneously showing prices at which they are willing to buy and sell options, i.e. a two-sided market. While trading options, market makers must manage the risk of these trades as well as their overall portfolio. Trading and risk management go hand in hand in this way.

After a broad introduction into financial markets and various instruments, we will discuss the special nature of options and the ways in which their price can be calculated. In this valuation of options, the so-called “implied volatility” plays a crucial role. For market makers this implied volatility and its behavior is the most interesting and challenging factor. We will discuss why!

Note that for this lunch lecture that are only 30 spots available. We kindly ask you to be subscribed Thursday before the lecture. If there are more than 30 people interested, there will be a draw. You will be informed about your participation, the lecture and all corona measures Friday before the lecture takes place.

    Dear members,

Much like previous years the “Weet Ik Veel” recruitment team has sent us another invitation to join their wonderful show, this is a Dutch (unfortunately also exclusively spoken in Dutch) game show where students will be tested on their general knowledge and the winner will receive a large sum of money! Sadly we will not have as large of a capacity this year due to corona, so we’ll be visiting there twice in 2 separate days. This year "Weet ik veel" is recorded in Studio 24 in Mediapark Hilversum (Sumatralaan, 1217 GP). We have chosen for the afternoon recordings, which means we have to be present from 14:00 until 17.45. The two available dates are Saturday the 26th of September and Wednesday the 30th of September. When subscribing please indicate which of the two days you would like to subscribe for.

Both activities will be facilitated by (at least) one board member, meaning that we can only take 9 members to the recordings on each of the days respectively. If there’s more subscriptions than the capacity allows for there will be a draw. Please subscribe before the 8th of September!

    Friday 25 Sep. 2020 16:00 - 19:00

As you all know, instead of the usual MomenTUm party, this year we will celebrate MomenTUm through a livestream. In this livestream, we focus on congratulating and entertaining all graduates through different items, including an interactive quiz, surprise elements, giveaways, and an afterparty with performances of student bands and DJ’s. Next to the graduates, we also want all other TU/e students to be able to celebrate MomenTUm this year, as they do every year. Our goal is to encourage as many graduates and students to watch the livestream and have a celebratory day (that afternoon is also education free).

Therefore, the board organizes a MomenTUm viewing party in the GEWIS room! There is currently a capacity of 15 people. However, on high demand, we will book some extra rooms, so we can all watch the stream together!

Are you really good at coming up with plausible lies? Or are you more of a Sherlock at detecting them? On the 15th of September, the AC presents to you the AC jACkbox tournament.

From 20:00 to 22:30, we will be playing three different online partygames from the jACkbox partypACk: fibbage, quiplash and drawful. These are games where you will battle against 7 other players every round and test not only your lying and drawing CApabilities, but also the ability to come up with funny or ridiculous answers. The ACtivity is free and will take place online using Discord. It is a tournament with a prize for the winner, but don't worry if you have never played these games before, because they are all very easy to learn. See you then!

    Hugs, the AC

  • B.O.O.M outdoor cinema

    Monday 14 Sep. 2020 19:00 - 22:00

On September 19, the beautiful fraternity B.O.O.M. received her 15th annual ring. We had a whole week full of fun activities planned for you to celebrate this special milestone with us. Unfortunately, a 3rd lustrum offers no magical protection against COVID-19 and we have had to decide to cut back on the festive celebration this year and celebrate our sweet-16 next year.

To get you out of those student rooms for a while and to offer you some entertainment, the 2nd edition of the popular outdoor cinema will take place on Monday September 14. We do not yet reveal which 2 films will be shown, but the films will undoubtedly bring a funny and not-so-serious atmosphere. Of course a cinema is not a cinema without (free) popcorn! And to complete the evening, our beloved bar committee will accompany us during the activity to serve some (alcoholic) beverages!

There are 16 spots on benches, but if you want to sit comfortably during the movies, we recommend that you bring your own (camping)seat. This way those camping chairs still come in handy this year! (The total capacity for the activity is 40.)

The exact location fo the activity will follow shortly!

  • FLUP day

    Saturday 12 Sep. 2020 13:00 - 19:00

Dear upcoming GEWISsers, Usually, the intro committee organizes an awesome FLUP weekend in the second weekend of the new study year. This is a follow up weekend to the introduction week, where you can get to know GEWIS and most of their active members, by doing al sorts of activities with them. Sadly, due to the corona-virus, we cannot do that this year. However we are able to organize a FLUP day! On this day, we hope to introduce to you the new GEWIS board, the fraternities, and the old FYC’s by letting you do small activities organized by them. In small groups, you will be guided to various locations in Eindhoven by a buddy from GEWIS. At the end of the day, you can join us for a barbeque on campus, where you can get to know the people from the other groups as well. This activity is meant for the new students and is planned on the 12th of September. This day only costs 3 euros. It would be convenient if you have a bike in Eindhoven. The barbeque will be at the Flux field. Hugs, Intro20 Due to new rules from the university, we have closed registrations for the FLUP activity. Would you still like to participate? Mail to intro20@gewis.nl and we will look into what is possible.

  • ATHENA Workout Summer Challenge #AWSC

    Mon. 13 Jul. 2020 (00:01) - Mon. 3 Aug. 2020 (23:59)

tldr: ATHENA workout summer challenge and buy a cool GEWIS bidon for only 3 euros! Subscription list opens Wednesday 24th June 12.00h.

Hi all! Corona probably did change your life! You are working from home, so you did not have that morning bike ride to the university. Or maybe it became better as you did not have to sit in the overfull train. Do you also miss that little nice walk from building to building at the campus with your study mates? We as ATHENA members found a new daily routine with which we tried to stay productive and healthly. Part of this is our weekly bootcamps (approximately 4 per week), from which you most likely already saw a sneak peak via our Instagram or at a Snapchat you received.

During the summer break we want to continue with this, but we are going to include you all in our #fitgirl and #fitboy process. We challenge you to participate in the three week ATHENA work-out, in which we will provide you with 3 work-outs per week of approximately 20 minutes. As not everyone is at the same level, we will make sure that for every level exercises will be provided. As we wanted to keep the threshold of the work-outs as low as possible, we made sure that the only equipment you need is a towel to lie on! If you want to challenge yourself extra, you can always use weights during the exercise, but that is for the die-hards! ;)

When you are working out and sweating you need to stay hydrated. So we as ATHENA will launch a GEWIS bidon. You can buy this GEWIS bidon for only 3 euros. There are only 50 bidons available so be fast! The subscription list opens at Wednesday the 24th of June at 12.00h. When there are more than 50 subscriptions in the first 3 hours, there will be drawn. If you do not want to join the amazing workout challenge, it is possible to subscribe for the bidon, but participants will get priority. The pick-up point for the bidon will be at North (Pisanostraat) or Center (Graaf Adolfstraat).

The videos will become available at our Instagram and ATHENA website!

    Hugs ATHENA.

You can view the design here! ![](https://www.gewis.nl/~athena/promo%20poster%203.jpg) UPDATE: Subscription for the bidons is not possible anymore!

  • Intro parent subscription

    Sunday 12 Jul. 2020 22:00 - 23:00

TL;DR: subscribe as intro parent at rex.gewis.nl before 12th of july. Make sure you are available 15th, 17th -21st of August.

    Dear GEWISers!

As you all know, quartile four has almost ended, which means for us that the planning for the introduction week is in full gear. It will be a very different kind of Intro compared to previous years, but we still need enthusiastic Intro-parents. As an Intro-parent, it will be your task to show the new students what the student life at the TU/e looks like. If you would like to become one, together with a partner of your choice, you will be appointed around ten new students as your “kiddo’s”. You will accompany them during the whole week, which will consist of three online and two offline days. You will be responsible for your group of intro-kids on both the online as well as on the offline days. It will be your goal to create a nice group bond so that every one of them will enjoy the week as much as possible!

If you are interested in becoming a parent, please pay attention to the following few points: you have to be available the 15th of August for the “introbegeleiders dag”, where the CIC will give you further information on your schedule and duties as a parent. Attendance is completely mandatory. This means, if you are not present the 15th, you cannot become an intro parent. Furthermore, you obviously have to be available during the introduction week itself, which is from the 17th to the 21st of August. On Monday, Tuesday and Thursday you have to be present online for the online program, while on Wednesday and Friday you will need to be present in person on the campus for the offline activities. Finally, you will be in charge of your group and together with your partner you should ensure that your group members participate in all the activities.

If you are as enthusiastic as we are and want to subscribe as a parent immediately, you should go and find a partner and go subscribe at https://rex.gewis.nl! The subscription closes at the 12th of July 23:59h. If there are too many applications, there will be a draw. You will hear the result of that draw at least before the end of July, hopefully sooner. We hope to see you all during the introduction week, whether it is online or in person!

    Lots of love, Intro20 committee
