When in a traditional software project, multiple components are to be integrated into a single working product, things nearly always go wrong. Continuous Integration is an approach to avoid this problem entirely, by automatically building and integrating all components whenever a developer makes a change. This way, large amount of design documentation and review sessions can be avoided, freeing up more time for actually making working software.
To do Continuous Integration right, a team must think about their group process, about how to use source control effectively, about the design of their components, and about how to do (automated) testing. In this talk, Egbert Teeselink, a GEWIS alumnus, will discuss how we do Continuous Integration at Sioux Embedded Systems, how we have learned and benefited from it, what we think we could do better, and how you can start doing Continuous Integration as well.
De afgelopen jaren is regelgeving voor banken steeds strenger geworden. Banken moeten onder andere hun kapitaalpositie versterken en Operational Risk Management speelt hier een belangrijke rol in. Loey doet onderzoek in de verschillende methodes voor het berekenen van Economisch Kapitaal voor ORM. Hij bekijkt welke statistische verdelingen het beste passen bij operationele verliesdata en onderzoekt de invloed van data kwaliteit op economisch kapitaal.
After our succesful third LAN last year, time is near for our fourth LAN. The idea is a little different then last year: everybody's welcome on friday from 19:00, but we can only enter the main room at 23:00. Before that, we will watch a movie or something. Note that we will not provide dinner on friday afternoon. A table, chair power and the network will be taken care of. Note that this year it is possible to sleep. Don't forget your sleeping stuff! On sunday at 15:00 everybody will have to go home unfortunatly.

A hands-on discourse on cybercrime with ethical hackers from KPMG uncovering the most common security mistakes made by large corporations. Interactively, we will develop a hacker mindset which is required to understand how attackers break into computer networks of large multinationals. In-depth knowledge about computers is definitely not required, but creative thinking capability is a prerequisite for participation.
The lecture will be given by (old) GEWIS member Pieter Ceelen.
Sunday, June 3rd, we will visit with the dispuut I.V.V a vineyard in the picturesque Zeeland. Here we get a wine tasting, a tour and information about the vineyard.

Namens de ACtiviteiten commissie presenteren wij u op 30 mei 2012 het Levend Stratego. Afgeleid van het welbekende bordspel, laat dit spel u een strategische veldslag strijden met als doel de vlag van het concurrerende team te doen vernietigen. Op 30 mei verzamelen wij eerst met eenieder rond de klok van 18.30 uur bij GEWIS om vervolgens naar de Karpendonkse Plassen te gaan en daar de strijd te voeren. De kosten van deze ACtiviteit bedragen 0 euro. Wel wordt er gevraagd om u in te schrijven bij GEWIS met mailadres, zodat wij bij eventueel slecht weer u kunnen bereiken om de tocht af te blazen.

All across the world governments are pushing towards an unprecedented technological overhaul of the electrical grids in a major initiative that is known as smart grids.
Smart grids promise many benefits, including reduced energy consumption and costs and increased reliability and transparency. But as utilities increase their capabilities by transforming their analog, one-way digital power grids to bi-directional, digital smart grids, certain risks increase and utilities will have to devote more resources and attention to protecting the reliability of the grid.
Accenture will highlight some of the interesting trends and roadmaps as well as networking and security challenges coming with the move towards smart grids. The presentation will focus on the practical way the energy industry is dealing with the challenges. This will not only provide you with insights into this hot topic, but also give you the opportunity to learn more about Accenture and the kind of work they do.
SCIFI invites you to join for a bicycle tour to La Trappe, the only Trappist brewery [1] in the Netherlands. The bicycle tour will take place in the afternoon of May 26th. In case of bad weather on that day, it will be postponed to June 16th. La Trappe is approximately 30km (about two hours cycling) from Eindhoven. At our destination, we will have time to relax, drink some beer, and to enjoy the surroundings. On the way back, we plan for a stop in Middelbeers to have ice cream. We will leave at 12:00pm from outside the main entrance of the main building (HG) and expect to be back at approximately 7:00pm. Food will not be provided, so either eat before-hand or bring some snacks.

Spirit Innovative Technologies levert automatiseringsproducten en services,
welke het mogelijk maken zeer nauwkeurige metingen te doen in de
petrochemie. Nadat enkele meet- en controlesystemen succesvol in deze niche
markt zijn geïntroduceerd, wordt inmiddels ook hardware ontworpen om 24/7 in
gigantische terminals, plants, depots en centrale controlekamers te draaien.
Stage of bijbaan gezocht?
Voor de interne bedrijfsvoering wordt bij Spirit IT gebruik gemaakt van
verschillende MySQL databases. Als database-front-end worden meestal
Excel-applicaties gebruikt, die in eigen beheer zijn ontwikkeld. De wens is
sommige van deze applicaties uit te breiden (met name met het oog op de
ontwikkeling van de tweede vestiging in Kuala Lumpur, Maleisië) en er is ook
behoefte aan nieuwe applicaties, onder andere voor het uitgeven van Spirit
IT's software-licenties.
Voor dit doel zoeken ze een of meerdere stageaires, die het interessant
vinden in de keuken van een internationaal opererend bedrijf te kijken, en
een bijdrage te leveren aan het goed laten functioneren van de onderneming.
Ervaring met SQL is vereist, net als met Excel, en programmeerervaring met
Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) in een Office-omgeving is gewenst.
Een unieke kans om in de keuken van Spirit IT rond te neuzen en met eigen
ogen te ervaren dat het weliswaar een klein bedrijf is, maar uitgegroeid tot
wereldspeler met veel potentie en doorgroeimogelijkheden.
