99 ways to skin a dead cat ...and what they all have in common
or, all you ever wanted to know about software development but were (rightly) afraid to ask.
From cowboy coding to ISO/IEC 12207:2008, the range and focus of "HOW-TO" develop software has changed and evolved as much over time as programming languages have. In this talk we'll explore various ways you could develop code, each with its own strengths and weaknesses depending on the solution domain. We'll also discover more about the WHY that lurks behind any given software development approach. Finally we'll learn some basic tips from the coding trenches that might come in handy as a professional later on, when the time comes for you to specify your company's very own software development process.

Bridge the Last Mile of Virtualization With Software-Defined Networking: Controlling the flow of information in today’s digital business – where applications, systems, networks and communications channels are constantly changing – is one of the most challenging aspects of enterprise IT. While the virtualization of servers, storage and other parts of IT infrastructure has resulted in unprecedented levels of flexibility, the network has been largely untouched by virtualization until now. Software-defined networking (SDN), where the network is managed through software instead of through hardware, provides a giant leap forward in enterprise flexibility. With SDN, organizations can reconfigure the connectivity of systems without changing the physical characteristics – making it easier for businesses to manage change, integrate cloud services and get more return from their network investments.

As a consultant in the area of Operations Research at ORTEC, I have been able to see various companies and experienced the differences between companies amongst themselves, and also the way every company will differ from the clean theory often taught at university. My lecture will be about the mentioned differences and I will illustrate this by providing real life examples of situations I encountered, both in the area of OR and IT.â€

GEWIS fraternity B.O.O.M. is proud to present: the B^x! It will be this years' first outdoor Borrel and it's going to be Brilliant. There's lots of things that you can expect during this Borrel: Burgers made on a Barbecue, Boswandeling (and other cocktails!), Bananas, Berwtensoep, and more things starting with the letter B! (Bad music comes to mind.) The borrel itself will be quite cold, as it is a Bikkel Buiten Borrel, so ensure you dress appropriately.
The event will take place at the HG-Noord veldje (north of the main building) at the TU/e, this Thursday starting at 16:30! The borrel will be longer than usual as well yay.
During this borrel the BAC will still be responsible for your drinks, and introduces a new method of payment for outdoor borrels: coins. A green coin costs 70 cent and can be used to purchase beer or soda (coke/fanta). A red coin equals half a green coin in value. Thus, some products may be more expensive than usual, others may be less expensive than usual - but being outdoors should make up for all that! The price list will be available during the Borrel at the Bar. Coins are also sold at the Bar, and are to be used for everything (including Burgers, cocktails, etc.). They cannot be exchanged for money, only for products at the bar! But, you can also use them during regular Borrels at GEWIS.
See you this Thursday!
With Branches and jumping in trees,
Fraternity B.O.O.M.

Same as every year GELIMBO will celebrate Carnival in Eindhoven. Maybe if you do not come from Rio de Janeiro in Brazil or the Bundesland Nordrhein Westfalen in Germany you are wondering what Carnival exactly is.
Carnival involves a public celebration or parade combining some elements of a circus, mask and public street party. People often dress up or masquerade during the celebrations, which mark an overturning of daily life.
The roots of Carnival are Catholic because the festivities end the day before ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday is the first day of the Lent. The Lent is a period of 40 days in preparation of Easter.
If you want to know more about it's history I would recommend you to just read the wikipedia page about Carnival; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnival.
We hope you will join us in celebrating. We will gather at GEWIS at 19:11 after which we will go into the city to celebrate.
So put on your wildest, your greatest, your funniest, your most original costume and join us with celebrating.

Title: Software Evolution at Philips Healthcare interventional X-ray (iXR)
Interventional X-ray R&D is responsible for the research and development of X-ray systems used for interventional treatment of heart and vascular diseases (e.g. “dottering†and “stent†placement).Multiple system configurations for different application areas exist, from low end to high end with system software of more than 20 million LOC, programming languages from VHDL to C# and some source code as old as 1988.Every year a major system release is rolled-out with new functionality and improved performance. As a result, a continuous evolution of the architecture and design takes place, based on changed market demands, cost reduction, new technology or architecture degradation. In this lunch lecture, we will discuss practical experiences and common pitfalls with re-architecting strategies, challenges based on architecture degradation and opportunities for model-driven development.

This Lunch Lecture is given by Tim Dekker, Test Designer at Sioux Embedded Systems. The subject is "Specification by Example". A description follows here:Are you fed up with those long, abstract and boring system specification documents? Are you longing for a more fun and agile way of creating a specification? This lunch lecture will introduce you to a world of more lightweight and concrete specs, smart tooling to help you create them and automatically verify that your implementation adheres to it. Use 'specification by example' and have your implementation being verified while you sleep!
