Lunaris: The better way to produce printed circuit boards
In this talk, Joost Sannen (embedded software architect at Sioux) will give an overview of the calibration algorithms that are critical for the operation of the Lunaris printer, which introduces a novel approach to printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturing by using inkjet technology for the imaging of this circuitry.
This new method requires very accurate (~10um) placement of millions of ink drops. Because the machine operates in a highly cost driven market, most of its components have relatively high mechanical tolerances. This is compensated for by automated calibrations. After placement, a Lunaris machine can calibrate itself to the required accuracy without external measurements.
The entire calibration process requires more than 15 steps, which are employing computer vision, solving thousands of equations and statistical analysis. An interesting use of mathematics and information technology in a far-from-trivial application.

Technical people look at security mostly from a technical standpoint. Are systems fully patched? Have SQL-injection problems been eliminated? Truth is, the technical aspect of security is just a small part of the problem. People are probably the biggest security problem to fix. Social engineering is conning people into giving you information or access to systems or buildings. It is, in most cases, far more easy than breaking in electronically. In this talk, we will look at what makes social engineering work, how to come up with working scenario's and how to try to avoid these problems. The lecture includes examples from actual social engineering assignments and some hilarious clips from the internet.
Architecture of a travel e-commerce platform
NetMatch is an innovative software specialist that provides e-commerce solutions to European clients in the travel industry. We build high quality, high volume websites for tour operators and online travel agencies. NetMatch’ clients are major travel companies such as Corendon, Zoover, and TUI Cruises.

Creating future experiences by combining software and design thinking Luc Geurts is a Creative Director at Philips Design working in the Strategic Design team. He holds a Professional Doctorate in Engineering on Software Technology (PDEng ST) degree from the TU/e. He has broad experience combining Computer Science, User Interaction research and Design-driven innovation. He is passionate about new user interaction technologies and how they can change our everyday life. In his current role he leads a program that generates new concepts and patents in the area of personal health. Through creative methods like user experience prototyping, storytelling and scenario development, he solves business challenges and addresses unmet user needs.

In de lunchlezing zal Paul Brouwers, alumni van de TU/e en momenteel werkzaam bij KPN Consulting, meer vertellen over het onderwerp Big Data. Big Data is momenteel Big Business, maar wat is Big Data nu eigenlijk? In dit college zal er kort worden ingegaan op deze vraag, alsmede hoe Big Data in de praktijk nu al overal wordt ingezet. Big Data is op meer plekken dan je denkt en wiskundigen spelen hierin een belangrijke rol, bijvoorbeeld als Data Scientists.
The masterclass provides an overview of the theory of information security with a lot of real-life examples and specific cases. We will discuss the relationship between security, IT-strategy and training/educational programs. Of course the revelations of Edward Snowden and the implications for security and IT-strategy won’t remain untouched and we will have a closer look at industrial automation and similar matters. Concrete examples of measures against so called advanced persistent threats, such as digital warfare and industrial espionage, will be discussed as well. Because nobody is boring enough to be clear of any secrets. Because everybody has got something to hide… Who is Arjen Kamphuis? Arjen Kamphuis studied physical science at the University of Utrecht and was an employee of IBM and worked for Twynstra Gudde as an IT-architect, trainer and IT-strategy advisor. He is a certified IT-auditor and information security expert (CISA, CISM). Arjen helps out companies, public institutions and a number of national governments to develop an IT-strategy that revolves around security. In order to keep his knowledge up to date he reads a megabyte of text every day and technical specialists, researchers and (former) spies brief him regularly with the latest information. Next to his job as advisor, he trains journalists and NGO-employees in practical information security and counter surveillance so they are able to operate safely in dangerous countries. At Brunel, Arjen essentially leads a team of information security specialists who work on digital security in leading organizations in The Netherlands on operational level as well as on policy level.
Microservices: Target or means?
Computers and demands have evolved over time, as well as tools and techniques. Waterfall and scrum is becoming old school; microservices are the new kid on the block. What are microservices and should we jump on the bandwagon? Niek Ederveen, software architect at Sioux, will give some overview and put it all in perspective.
There are a lot of possible paths to walk after your graduation. You can go work for a big and fancy company, or test your innovative skills at a start-up. But did you know that there are also a lot of possibilities here on the university? For instance, to get a PhD or a PDEng. Is printing dead?
If you think that printing is awesome, this this talk is for you. If you think printing is boring, it might be even more for you! We are going to show you how amazing the digital printing world is and how it advances the graphic arts state-of-the-art. What does that mean for you as an end user? You may not know that when ordering a rare book online, the retailer does not need a storage full with possibly unsellable books. In fact, you do not need to wait weeks for the book shipment from the other end of the world; it is printed on demand on a machine so fast that it can produce thousands of different books per month. What does that mean for you as a software developer? Hristina Moneva will share with you her typical working day, the range of challenges in different (embedded and system control) projects as well as her experiences with model-driven development. Do you have another question about software development in the high-tech digital printing domain? Just come and ask her in person...
In your studies you learn a lot, but how you can apply what you learn at a company remains sketchy at best. Two graduates, one with a background in computer science and the other in applied mathematics will share their experiences with you, such as the step of student to professional and the role of a professional with your particular background. Also the problems that need to be solved will be discussed. How do you work with a codebase of 40 million lines of code? How does the software architecture help with this? What is the importance of mathematical models to a machine? Where do the mathematics and computer science meet and have to work together? These topics and the topics you want to know about will be investigated in this ASML lunch lecture.

Furthermore, I will go into more depth regarding the question `Do Wi-Fi users get better Wi-Fi by working together?'. Next to that, Myrte de Juncker will elaborate on her final thesis, which considered the planning of containers using real-time data.

How can we detect fraudulent behavior on our websites? Of any size? In real time? Hylke will explain how, by considering a user’s click path a followed process, ING applied a technique called process mining and adapted it to Spark Streaming. This resulting in near real-time fraud detection and analysis.

On February the 20th, a crash course is given by Alten. Bram Dil comes to the TU/e to give a presentation about localization of wireless devices with a focus on unobtrusive localization. Unobtrusive localization means that the wireless device and its user are not aware of being located. For example, wifi-enabled smartphones transmit signals that can be intercepted for localization purposes. This system is for example employed by several stores in the Netherlands to investigate customer behavior. A similar system was also implemented and deployed at the UT for several years for crowd monitoring.
The systems named above only work when Wifi is enabled on the smartphone, however one can also intercept GSM signals transmitted by a smartphone using a fake cell tower. A fake cell tower emulates the behavior of a legitimate cell tower to fool unaltered smartphones to connect with it. At Liu, they used this localization system in search and rescue operations and localizing rhino poachers.
With the rise of the Internet of Things, there are billions of wireless devices that require localization, which is still a topic of research. The goal is to maximize localization performance with minimum effort. Bram believes that similar unobtrusive techniques can be used to obtain this goal. For those new to the topic, he gives an overview on the topic, for the hobbyists he gives pointers to make such a system themselves. The crash course will start at 14.00 in MF6. Afterwards he will be available for talks, questions and possible graduation projects while enjoying a nice drink.
