ARGHH shipmen!! In preparation for the legendary sailing weekend that we are going to organize in Q4, a beautiful GEZWEM activity is coming up! This time it will take place again in the way you are used to from us, but then squeezed into 1 day. We will enter the waters at Riverside Outdoor & Events (in Appeltern) in falcon boats, with 4-5 people per boat, and then enjoy a wonderful day of sailing. Sailing experience is not necessary! We will travel together from Eindhoven to the sailing location. We could still use a number of cars for this because the location is difficult to reach by public transport. There are only 25 spots available so subscribe quickly! If there are more than 25 subscriptions by the time the subscription deadline has passed, there will be a draw.

You might already know that shortly after the summer break, the AMSL Marathon Eindhoven is taking place. It's held on October 9 and as a committee very interested in running, we would like to encourage you to join! Of course, we're not asking you to run the full marathon, if that's a bit too much for you. The whole marathon 'event' is comprised of different categories: Marathon (42.195 km) Half Marathon (21,1 km) 1/4 Marathon (10,55 km) City Run (5 km) There are some other special categories. If you're interested, you can find those on the official website. If you are running in one of these categories and are also interested in having training sessions organized by us, please let us know here (note that you will have to subscribe yourself). If there is enough demand, we might just get working on that! Additionally, if you do not want to have training sessions with us, you can still let us know you are running in the event here, since we would also like to organize some activity around the marathon (like a group lunch or borrel).

Besides doing your homework, or writing essays, LaTeX has much more to provide. The program can handle more than just some images, tables or equations, and if you think you can too, then we have just the opportunity for you. Next to the beginners training of October 5th, Gijs will also be giving an advanced training! You will learn how to spruce up your files with headers and footers, learn how to make nice graphs using tikz, write down your algorithms clearly, and more! But why stop there? At this training you will also get a familiarity with creating your own class, or even your own packages. There will be exercises too, of course. So you can put your newly learned skills to the test immediately. And it wouldn't be a TRAIN activity if we didn't provide some healthy snacks! We hope to see you there! Choo choo, TRAIN

Sioux Technologies has all the expertise in-house to contribute to the success of high-tech products and production systems. Sioux's strength lies in its unique combination of high-quality competences in software, mathware, mechatronics, electronics and assembly. With more than 800 engineers, Sioux supports or acts as the R&D department of leading high-tech companies. Sioux likes to take responsibility: from thinking along in the concept phase to supplying series production. Together with its customers, Sioux wants to add value and build innovative solutions that can contribute to a society that is smarter, safer, healthier, more pleasant and sustainable. The power of code generation. Reading code is much more complex than writing code. Yet, a line of code is read more often than it is being written. That's why we need to write a lot of documentation to explain what our code does, and how it works. But now we are writing the same thing twice! Wouldn't it be nicer to write the documentation once, and generate the source code from that? And that's precisely what we've done with SuperModels, an in-house developed application that is capable of performing Model Driven Engineering. We can create models representing how a piece of software or a machine works. From these models, we can generate (part of) the source code. But it doesn't stop there, because once you have the power of generators, why not generate more artifacts such as installers, configuration files, (REST) interfaces? Or even better, somehow clone the physical machine itself? Come, see and listen what power Model Driven Engineering has, and how it might affect your vision of what a programming language is. Casper Smits has been with Sioux for a little more than a year. He joined directly after completing his MSc in Computer Science and Engineering at the TU/e. Being skeptical at first, by witnessing the power of Model Driven Engineering first-hand, he is now a big advocate, and one of the main contributors to the in-house SuperModels toolchain. Note: after subscribing, showing up is mandatory!

We hear all about it in the news. The receptions of asylum seekers are overcrowded. New locations (such as cruise ships) are being converted to shelter asylum seekers. You can imagine that in times of war (Ukraine) and the continuous flow of specific refugees (Syrians) the influx of asylum seekers continues. In combination with staff shortages at the Dutch Immigration Service (IND) this causes major problems. The IND assesses all applications from foreign nationals who want to live in the Netherlands or want to become Dutch citizens. We help the IND with a better planning process within the complex migration chain by providing a custom software solution. We need your help for this case! In recent years, the large number of applications has resulted in a backlog of thousands of asylum applications. . This is troublesome for both; the asylum seekers who are waiting for their application review, as well as for the Dutch Immigration Service, that have to pay penalties for long asylum processes. With your team you will help the IND by efficiently reducing the backlog of thousands of asylum applications. For the best solutions you have to take different dependencies into account such as availability of employees, competence (languages) of employees, nationality of refugees, penalties of refugees and of course ethical decisions. Which group will manage to get to the lowest penalty fee, while taking ethics into account? Please bring your own laptop for this case. This case will be most interesting for mathematics students. You get 1 MyFuture point for attending this activity!

Did you know that the BAC (BAr Committee) is turning 25 this academic year? And that the BAC (Bijzondere Activiteiten Commissie) is even older? This means that we will be celebrating our fifth en seventh Lustrum at the same time! Most activities will likely take place in May (more on this later). However, we are planning to kick off our Lustrum year with a legendary weekend full of BAC related activities (we’re gonna drink beer, duh). The weekend will take place in the marvelous city of Antwerpen, Belgium. We have put together a filled (but not too busy) schedule, full with activities that every beer-enthusiast is sure to enjoy. During the weekend, we will stay in a hostel in the middle of the beautiful historical city center. On Friday, we have organized a delicious 2-course dinner where you can enjoy one of the 366 Belgian craft beers that are served. After the dinner, you are free to explore Antwerpen (and its nightlife) some more. On Saturday afternoon, we will have a tour of a real Belgian brewery! 2 beers are included in this tour, such that we can enjoy the tour even more. After the tour, we will make the streets of Antwerpen unsafe (in a safe way) on 2 beer bicycles, that we are free to use for 2 hours. Of course, beer is included, as is the BOB (designated driver), such that we can all enjoy some beers while on the road. What you want to do for the rest of the weekend is yours to decide, but it is likely that beer will still be involved in some way. The weekend will only cost you €65 if you are a student and €115 otherwise. Transport, stay in the hostel, dinner for one night, the tour of the brewery and the beer bicycles are included in this price. We can only take 32 people with us, so make sure to subscribe fast! The subscription list opens Friday the 23rd of September at 12:00, if it is full before 17:00 there will be a draw, afterwards it is first come, first serve. Note that students have priority over burgers, as have people with cars. Note: due to university regulations, freshmen are not allowed to join on a international trip.

Dear student, Coming 30th November the 2022 Edition of the SNiC Congress - CelerIT will take place in the Parktheater in Eindhoven. First, for those of you that aren’t all too familiar, a little more about the SNiC Congress: The SNIC congress itself takes place yearly in November, in a different city every year. It attracts hundreds of students from all throughout the country. It’s a single-day event where lots of speakers come and give an interesting talk about state-of-the-art technology or practices in the aforementioned fields. Not only is the day filled with exciting presentations about innovation, during the breaks and after the event you’re also able to have a chat with  any of the participating companies of the congress. They can tell you a lot about career-related questions and projects that their companies are currently working on related to the themes of the congress. Now for what makes this year’s edition special. As it may not be very obvious, CelerIT (pronounced Celer - IT)  is a play on the word Celerity, which in turn is not a very common word. The word can be described as meaning the swiftness of motion. We have chosen to translate this definition into an interpretation that is applicable to our field of science. Our congress will be all about the bigger picture of how fast technology has been, and still is, evolving. In other words, the swiftness of the rise and fall of technological developments in these fields, where we look both at what has been, the present and what’s still to come. Now on to mention a few names that will be presenting on CelerIT! One of our speakers, Philippe Schoonejans, is a project manager at human and robotic exploration for ESA (the European Space Agency). After decades of experience he is currently helping develop a space arm for sampling material from Mars. Another innovative researcher, Amanda Prorok, works in the field of multi-agent and multi-robot systems. Her lab’s research team focuses on finding new ways to coordinate artificially intelligent agents. This involves a very methodological approach to solving many-faceted logistical challenges and has numerous applications to real world systems. You may have heard of a YouTube channel by the name of 3Blue1Brown. They explore challenging (sometimes mind-boggling) problems in mathematics and adjacent fields and present them in a format such that they can be comprehended with little to no prior knowledge while still diving deep into their complexity in a very enticing presenting style. TL;DR Join us on the 30th of November in Eindhoven for an inspiring and engaging congress featuring innovative talks about computer science, company contact and discussion panels; lunch, borrel and dinner included! You can follow us on snic_celerit on Instagram for updates and check out the CelerIT website for more information! For only €7,- you can join this event. This includes lunch, dinner and drinks during the day. There are only 80 tickets available. If there are more subscriptions than tickets at 26 September 12.00 there will be a draw among everyone who is subscribed at that moment. After that the tickets will be handed out on a first come, first serve bases. After that people will be put on a waiting list. Your name and e-mail address will be shared with Stichting Nationaal Informatica Congres. They will process this data in accordance with their privacy policy. Students will receive 3 MyFuture points for participation in this activity. Please bring your campus card.
