ABC x Hacktoberfest
Persoonlijke ontwikkeling Handig voor eerstejaarsstudenten
Wo. 1 okt. 2025 (00:00) - vr. 31 okt. 2025 (23:59)

October is Hacktoberfest, and GEWIS is joining the global celebration of open source! Throughout the entire month, we invite all members, especially first-years, to dive into the world of open source software and contribute to the projects that power our association.

Hacktoberfest is a worldwide event that encourages people to learn, collaborate, and give back to the open source community. At GEWIS, the ABC manages the software that keeps our association running smoothly. This month, we are opening up our projects to anyone eager to learn new skills, write some code, and make meaningful contributions.

You can participate at any time during October. Whether you want to fix a small issue, improve documentation, or add a new feature, there’s something for everyone. The ABC (and other GEWIS developers) will be available throughout the month to help you get started and guide you through the process.

You can contribute to any of the following projects:

  • SudoSOS Backend: The logic behind our bar system, written in TypeScript. It powers transactions in the GEWIS room and at social drinks. You can see the GitHub repository.
  • SudoSOS Frontend and POS: The web interface at sudosos.gewis.nl and the Point of Sale system on the kitchen screens, both part of the same monorepo. Written in TypeScript and now fully migrated to Vue 3. You can see the GitHub repository.

How to Join:

  1. Register for Hacktoberfest at hacktoberfest.com
  2. Pick a project that interests you — or find one with the hacktoberfest tag on GitHub or GitLab
  3. Start contributing anytime during October
  4. Ask for help from the ABC or other GEWIS developers — we’re here to guide you
  5. Have a chance to win one of our cool prizes!
Anywhere you want :) Free!

Are you interested in contributing to the open source projects that power GEWIS? Do you want to learn new skills and collaborate with other students and developers? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you should join the Hactoberfest x ABC activity at GEWIS! Hactoberfest is a global event that celebrates open source software and encourages people to participate in it. The ABC is the committee that manages the software of GEWIS by developing and maintaining various applications and services. Together, we have prepared a special activity for GEWIS members, especially first-years, to get involved in open source and contribute to the projects that power GEWIS. For this activity we have several projects available with easier issues that will help you get acquainted with working on larger open source projects:

  • GEWIS.nl: should be self-explanatory but the GEWIS website is the go-to place for GEWIS members to read about activities, view photos, and be involved with the assocation. It is written in PHP and uses the Laminas Framework, for more information see the GitHub repository.
  • GEWISDB: the decision and member database, you used this when you joined the association through join.gewis.nl! It is written in PHP and uses the Laminas Framework, for more information see the GitHub repository.
  • SudoSOS backend: you may be already be familiar with our bar system when you bought some food or drinks in the GEWIS room or at a social drink. The backend, written in TypeScript, houses all the logic to make that happen, for more information see the GitHub repository.
  • SudoSOS frontend: the SudoSOS frontend is what you see when you go to sudosos.gewis.nl. It allows you to view your transactions and to top up your balance. The BAC uses it to manage the whole systems, from the products, to the users, and the fines. It is written in TypeScript and is currently being moved to Vue3, see the GitHub repository.
  • SudoSOS POS: the POS (Point of Sale) is the interface that allows you to make purchases within the system. It is on the screens in the kitchen of GEWIS. It is written in TypeScript and is currently being moved to Vue3, see the GitHub repository. Do you think you can help with one of these projects? Sign up to this activity and select your project! Do not worry about needing experience, we are there to help you get started. Also, do not forget to register for Hacktoberfest and to bring your laptop! Want to work on another project? Check GitHub and GitLab for projects that have the hacktoberfest tag and see if you can help there.
