We are facing many societal and environmental challenges: the energy transition, climate adaptation, biodiversity collapse, circular economy, and large-scale replacement of infrastructure, to name just a few. These are large, complex, and multidisciplinary problems that involve many stakeholders whose interests often clash. Effectively applying IT allows you to take an integrated and iterative approach and is therefore a requirement to solve these problems. In this talk we will look at some of the societal and environmental challenges that we are facing today, how IT can help to tackle these challenges, and what your role as an IT professional can be in this.
