Parallel computing in the modern age.
The basic techniques of semaphores and mutexes are to multicore programming, what leaves and tree branches are to building a house. Yes, they will keep you from freezing, but it will be windy and leak everywhere. The programmer's free lunch of faster processors has come to an end a decade ago. So to make your program faster, but keep its reliability, you must use modern multicore programming techniques.
