The CPPS track of the Honors Academy and GEWIS proudly present the third edition of ADHOC – Algorithm Engineering Contest, a heuristic optimization battle designed to test your real-world problem-solving skills.

Unlike traditional programming contests where speed and clever tricks dominate, ADHOC focuses on something different: engineering strong solutions under real constraints. This is not about finding the answer. It’s about building better answers.

You will face one open-ended optimization problem based on a realistic scenario. The twist? The problem is computationally intractable - an exact solution within reasonable time simply does not exist. Instead, your mission is to design intelligent heuristics that push your solution closer to the optimum. You start at infinity - the lower your score, the better. When time runs out, the team with the lowest total score takes the win. There even is an actual prize for the first team, sponsored by ASML!

You will have 4 hours to battle multiple instances of the problem. Teams may consist of two to four participants. Bring your laptops, your sharpest ideas, and your most trusted collaborators.

The programming languages supported are Java, Python and C++. You are free to use any open-source tools and libraries. Just like in real engineering practice, you choose your own strategy.  However, paid services, cloud computing platforms, or external compute power are not allowed - we keep the competition fair (no supercomputers 😉).

During the contest, we provide free lunch and snacks. Afterwards, we reveal the leaderboard, break down solution strategies, and award the winning team. There will of course be time to celebrate once the dust has settled.

If you love algorithms, optimization, AI, or simply tackling problems that refuse to be solved easily - ADHOC is for you.

Note: there is a maximum capacity of 25 teams. If more than 25 teams subscribe, a prioritization is given to full teams (consisting of 4 participants).

This unique challenge is organized for the first time, and we are very excited to see how you – our honored contenders will tackle it! Bring a few laptops, up to three of your most trusted advisors (teammates) and your sharp brains to the battlefield and face the competition! And in return we will provide FREE lunch and snacks during the contest and a small social drink after everything is over and the dust has settled. Then we will also reveal who proved to be the fiercest challenger and award them handsomely! We will of course also show off our own solutions and techniques.

Unlike other programming contests you are already familiar with like EAPC, BAPC, and FYPC, which reward contestants for their speedy implementation and clever tricks, Ad HOC rewards solutions which balance accuracy and running time. You will be presented with one (yes only one) problem, and you will have 4 hours to battle 5 instances of it. The problem is a real-life task that people (even within our department!) get to tackle every year (admittedly, on a smaller scale). However, something is not as it seems... The problem is unsolvable (in any reasonable time)! So, then the best you can do is try to get veeeery close to a solution! The closer you get, the more points you will score and at the end – the team with the most points wins! To put it simply, there isn’t just one “best” solution, instead you can score points with almost any solution you think of. However, some perform better than others and will bring more points!  

Finally, you are free to use ANY open-source software, tools, libraries, programming languages, etc. Just like in a war, anything goes. Well, our form of the Geneva convention applies, and you are not allowed to use paid services – like cloud computing or supercomputing power (basically no nukes).

Do you love programming and would you like to give yourself a challenge? Then this is the perfect opportunity for you to get involved with our programming contest. This contest is the First Year Programming Contest. So as the name suggests, a programming contest for first years. You can join and enter with 3 people as one team and try to leave with the trophy. You can use Java/C++/other language to compete, so no worries about not knowing all languages. Even if you are not that good of a programmer, it’s a fun day of coding and there are plenty of free snacks and drinks during the contest.

Are you tired of constantly losing all your programming competitions? Don't worry, happens to the best of us. But even for someone like you, there is plenty of room for fun to be had! If you want to improve your programming skills, or instead maybe you want to make the lives of other programmers more difficult, then the FYPC is just the activity for you! During the FYPC you will be solving a programming problem set, but there is a twist. Or perhaps we should say Twister? During the competition, you will have to take on various challenges against other teams. These range from racing around on bikes to seeing who is the better dancer in Just Dance. If you manage to win, nothing will happen. If you lose, however, oh boy do we have bad news! There will be various punishments, from your mouse moving to a random coordinate and clicking to... Actually, we do not want to spoil the fun just yet ;). We will provide free lunch during the day and there will also be a "borrel" (social drink) at the end of the competition. So not only is there a ton of fun to be had, but it will also be cheaper than staying at home! Practical information:

• The competition is intended for groups of three, you can sign up as a group of two, but groups of three have priority.

• The competition will take place on the 27th of May and last somewhere until 18:00 with a social drink afterwards.

• There is a maximum of 23 teams. If there are more teams subscribed at the moment of closing, we will hold a draw.

For those of you that have never been at such contest, these are some examples of tasks we can use a helping hand with:

Het begin van het nieuwe academische jaar brengt altijd veel vreugde met zich mee: het maken van nieuwe vrienden, leren over nieuwe onderwerpen, maar het allerbelangrijkst de EAPC! Ja, echt waar.

Hash Code is a team programming competition, organized by Google, for students and professionals around the world. You pick your team and programming language and we pick an engineering problem for you to solve. Top teams will then be invited to compete from our virtual World Finals. Sign up with your team via Google (g.co/hashcode) and select the TU/e hub! The physical hub will be on campus. We'll bring snacks!

Met het beginnen van het academische jaar, begint ook een nieuw hoofdstuk in het epos der algoritmisch programmeren. Al jaren aan een stuk strijden studenten in de eerste maanden van het academische jaar om de titel van beste algoritmicus van Eindhoven en deze strijd der titanen vindt dit jaar plaats op 9 oktober.

De EAPC, de Eindhoven Algorithmic Programming Contest is een wedstrijd van 5 uur waar je samen met 2 teamgenoten, een laptop en een cheat sheet van 25 paginas algoritmische problemen op gaat lossen. Deze cheatsheet en je gezond verstand zijn dan ook alles wat je mee hoeft te nemen, want wij zorgen ervoor dat er genoeg te eten en te drinken is en je krijgt zelfs nog wat goodies van Prodrive mee!

Kortom: het wordt een leuke dag en thuis blijven is duurder! Trommel je vrienden daarom op en schrijf je nu in om geschiedenis te schrijven in de de kronieken der EAPC!

Als je nog geen team hebt, laat dan het veld "Teamnaam" leeg en wij proberen een team voor je te vinden.

Deze kerstvakantie, voor de eerste keer ooit op deze manier, staat een STEP server open voor alle redelijke vormen van abuse.

PS. STEP is het systeem voor fysieke tentamens op je eigen laptop.(Normaal met een USB stick maar nu zal de control web interface gestest worden door jullie.)

Dit jaar organiseert GEHACK wederom de EAPC. Door corona zal het er dit jaar net iets anders uit zien dan normaal en zal de EAPC nu plaatsvinden vanuit je eigen kamer. Meedoen is dus nog makkelijker dan ooit dus schrijf je snel in in teams van 3 om de felbegeerde EAPC wisseltrofee te bemachtigen.(Mocht je nog geen team hebben zullen wij proberen een team voor je te vinden dus heb je nog geen team wees niet getreurd).

Bij de EAPC zullen vele verschillende programmeer vragen worden gesteld, ook vele die met alle kennis van Programming goed op te lossen zijn dus laat ervaring geen reden zijn om niet aan dit mooie evenement mee te doen.

Normaal bij de EAPC worden de snacks rijkelijk verzorgd alleen aangezien het evenement dit jaar niet op de campus plaats zal vinden wordt dit lastig. We zijn nu aan het kijken naar een mogelijkheid om thuis toch snacks te verzorgen. Mocht dit kunnen hebben wij een address nodig, vandaar het laatste veld bij de inschrijf lijst om mogelijk toch nog snacks bij u thuis te kunnen verzorgen.

GEHACK will be hosting a Google Hash Code hub in Luna this year. Everyone is free to join so don't hesitate to subscribe. All you have to do is find a team consisting of up to 4 people and go to g.co/hashcode to register. Snacks and drinks will be provided by us during the evening.

In het weekend van 15, 16 en 17 November zal net zoals vorig jaar de grootste studenten programmeerwedstrijd van Noord-West Europa plaatsvinden hier in het prachtige auditorium. Daarom luidt ons advies ook om je in te schrijven voor dit epische evenement, want thuis blijven is duurder! Voor eerstejaars studenten is het extra aantrekkelijk om mee te doen, want bij serieuze deelname aan de wedstrijd wordt er één extra huiswerkopdracht van 2IP90 weggestreept. Vanwege de grote hoeveelheid interesse kunnen alleen de eerste 125 deelnemers meedoen.

On the 2nd February GEHACK is organizing the Eindhoven Algorithmic Engineering Programming Contest (EAEPC). In this contest you have 4 hours to create the best possible solution to an engineering problem, in a similar fashion to Google Hashcode. You can compete in teams of 2 to 4 persons and you can use your own laptop. If you don't have a team, send us an email and we'll try and match you up. The problem can be solved in any programming language* you are familiar with, as you only need to submit the solutions.

To test your setup a judge will be made available a few days in advance that will grade a test problem, so you can practice for the contest, check if you have everything setup and debug our judging system.

Signup is free and in teams of 2 to 4 persons. Bring your own laptop and don't forget the associated charger! We'll provide a power outlet and some snacks for during the contest.

• We do not recommend the esoteric languages from last year's EEAPC but feel free to try.
