What you can expect as a junior software engineer at Deltares

You will be working in the Water Quality and Ecology Software (WES) department. Together with the team you will develop and maintain various software products, including numerical kernels (such as D-Water Quality and D-Particle Tracking), analysis tools (such as D-Eco Impact) and user interfaces (Emission Test, Deltashell). Much of our software is open source. 

All of our products are of high quality and that is necessary! This is because they are applied in studies of water quality and ecology of coastal areas, estuaries, rivers and rural & urban areas. This is how we ensure that water in delta areas remains clean and healthy. 

Main tasks include:

  • You develop user-friendly scientific software for water quality and ecology research;
  • You collaborate with scientific software engineers and specialists on software products in a scrum team. It is therefore important that you can work well together and commit to set deadlines; 
  • You analyze the software requirements together with product owners and specialists;
  • You accelerate and renew existing simulation models, using the latest IT capabilities;
  • You explore the possibilities of data science and new technologies, such as cloud computing, for applications in delta technology.

At WES, you work using development techniques such as Agile and Test Driven Development. The user interfaces are written in C#, the underlying computational hearts in Fortran and the analysis tools in Python. Specialists from the various disciplines of Deltares are closely involved in the specification and validation of new software.

What does Deltares expect from you as a Junior Software Engineer?

You have the ambition to develop high quality software. You are looking for a job where you can make an impact! In addition, we ask:

  • You have an MSc or higher education degree in Computer Science (or similar) and demonstrated experience with software development;
  • We do not ask for knowledge of natural sciences, but it is a big plus. Affinity is definitely a must! 
  • You have experience with Object Oriented programming in one of the following languages: C#, Python or C++;
  • You have experience developing innovative software solutions to complex problems;
  • Knowledge of topics such as software architecture, Continuous Integration and Development, Unit Testing, UML, Docker/Kubernetes and/or SOLID/GRASP principles is a plus.

We offer

  • Deltares offers a contract (32-40 hours) for 12 months with the intention of a contract for an indefinite period of time. 
  • Our starting salary is gross €3.461 per month based on 40 per week. If you already have several years of work experience, we will come to an appropriate scale in consultation.
  • Vacation allowance of 8%, 34 vacation days based on 40 hours per week, ABP pension, vitality budget, mobility budget and a compensation for healthcare expenses.
