Lunch Lecture Sioux Technologies

Career

Sioux Technologies has all the expertise in-house to contribute to the success of high-tech products and production systems. Sioux's strength lies in its unique combination of high-quality competences in software, mathware, mechatronics, electronics and assembly. With more than 800 engineers, Sioux supports or acts as the R&D department of leading high-tech companies. Sioux likes to take responsibility: from thinking along in the concept phase to supplying series production. Together with its customers, Sioux wants to add value and build innovative solutions that can contribute to a society that is smarter, safer, healthier, more pleasant and sustainable. **The power of code generation.**Reading code is much more complex than writing code. Yet, a line of code is read more often than it is being written. That's why we need to write a lot of documentation to explain what our code does, and how it works. But now we are writing the same thing twice! Wouldn't it be nicer to write the documentation once, and generate the source code from that? And that's precisely what we've done with SuperModels, an in-house developed application that is capable of performing Model Driven Engineering. We can create models representing how a piece of software or a machine works. From these models, we can generate (part of) the source code. But it doesn't stop there, because once you have the power of generators, why not generate more artifacts such as installers, configuration files, (REST) interfaces? Or even better, somehow clone the physical machine itself? Come, see and listen what power Model Driven Engineering has, and how it might affect your vision of what a programming language is. Casper Smits has been with Sioux for a little more than a year. He joined directly after completing his MSc in Computer Science and Engineering at the TU/e. Being skeptical at first, by witnessing the power of Model Driven Engineering first-hand, he is now a big advocate, and one of the main contributors to the in-house SuperModels toolchain.
